Luxury or necessity

Ive said this before on here but here it is again -
Apparently you should refuse to take the wagon out if it has no fridge as its against your human rights to deny you access to cooled liquid during your working day.
As told to me by an RDC lawyer so it must be true.

You forgot to add that the liquid/water should also be provided as it is a basic need.!

My boss had fridges put in all the units at his expense although only do about 3-4 night out it is useful

Would you live at home without a fridge  think not so why when you spend nearly as much time in the cab as at home have something as basic as a fridge they should come as standard in this day & age

If I’m in a job where they expect me to be out all week then I’d expect a fridge. If I’m only doing the odd night out, a fridge isn’t really needed. Sure its nice to have but a coolbox for my cans of Pepsi works just fine.

I do 3-4 night out every week but can understand what you saying about the odd night then a cool box ( sorry don’t drink pop ) but for my water yep & some food which I carry

It’s not a luxury item these days, anymore than a washing machine being a luxury over a launderette. The cheaper cool boxes are crap. They only lower the ambient temp by 5 degrees. You have to put them in the back of the trailer overnight in the winter, but the summer is a nightmare. Great when you’re driving, but when you’re sat about tipping, everything gets warm. You need to be spending at least £150-200 to get a decent one.

But the attitudes of some of the “■■■■■■■■” trampers saying get on with it, really explains why most drivers are fat and skint, spending £100 a week or more eating ■■■■ away from the cab. Having a proper fridge allows you to eat healthier and cheaper.

15 years ago, 1 in 10 trampers motors had a fridge, and it was a luxury, but now it’s nearer 8 in 10, and the other 2 are how I identify cheap arse companies. Personally I wouldn’t tramp for a company without a fitted fridge. It’s 2016 ffs. Day work is different as you can buy cool bag, and you’re going home to a home cooked meal every night. Tramping is not worth the hassle if it costs you extra money to actually do it

I’m not fat nor skint and I eat healthily every day. I don’t spend anywhere near £100 a week and have been doing the job for nigh on 15 years. Get some facts before spouting crap as usual. £30.00 per week is about right for me and fresh vegetables EVERY day!

£35 a day on…

Breakfast: Breakfat (sic) wrap with ketchup and extra cheese (McDs)
Brunch: Flat bread BMT with all the trimmings and chilli sauce and wander around with cookey (Subway)
Lunch: 4 piece meal with coleslaw, beans and corn on the cob (KFC)
Tiffin: 1.5 litres of Coca Cola and two packets of Hob Nobs (any MSA forecourt area)
Evening: Triple Whopper with cheese extra onions a side of onion rings and that Aero Burst thingy (Burger King)
Midnight snacky: Walkers crisps, Diet Coca Cola and salted peanuts (any MSA forecourt area)
Oh god I’ve woken up cos I’m hungry: Little bits of food lying around the cab mainly McDs french fries (all of the above)

Bon appetite`

That’s good buy why sell yourself short? If you’re away all week expecting the truck to have a proper fridge isn’t really much to ask. Tho to be fair it was only after working for Virginia who spec all their new trucks with fridges and pods that I realised that the was the way it should be. As someone else pointed out cheap cool boxes are crap. Unless something about the job was spectacular I wouldn’t take a job that involved tramping in a basic spec lorry these days.

Let’s stop underselling ourselves, we deserve better treatment

Well done if you can manage it without a fridge, but how do you keep the vegetables fresh without one?

Does help if you drive for brakes and alike

running Sainsbury trailers daily from east Kilbride to northern Ireland and back plus 2 ferrys every day loaded me up with an extra 1. 1/2 stone within a year…they have great cream cakes and eclairs,…went back to tramping after my misses told me I was a fat git and lost it in 6 month…

All our new lorries bought in the last 2yrs have fridge/freezer but the rest of our fleet is made up with cheap auction units so its a lottery. I only have an electric cool box in my unit and do quite a few nights out. Nights out are fairly new to this company so they never considered fridges etc for the cabs, all they did was only by units with bunks.

It docent cost me much to tramp but then I hardly ever eat away from the cab but with shopping at weekend take in when I start what need to go in fridge does rest in cupboards

Maybe once a week I will buy but that normally last day ( have a little cash if still have end of week will buy some food ) although not every week

I cook food at home take with me & no I have not put weight on in fact have lost a little ( ok so put some on last year after accident )

But I agree with Luke why sell yourself short as people often go on about decent companies then if they are decant they will spec your cab with a fridge or do as my boss did have one fitted at his cost ( proper Volvo under the bunk )

You go to work to earn money not to spend on the cab

I think thats a good point. I don’t tramp. Living in a house without a fridge wouldn’t be seen as normal. Trampers do not have accommodation provided or hotels with decent restaurants and expenses. You are given a fat camper van and twenty quid. Alongside decent pay, correct working conditions are something to strive for.

I wouldn’t share. And wouldn’t tramp unless it’s a scania with fridge and microwave. Should be basic kit now for all guys who tramp.

:open_mouth: It’s nice to have a fridge and mw when tramping, as I have, but not entirely essential in real terms.
But you say the make of truck would be your main concern to determine whether or not you would take a good job that was offered.
I reckon I’ve heard it all now.
