They say that in a few years time there will be a shortage of drivers ( as us older ones retire ) as there are not a lot of younger ones coming into driving to replace maybe it is time that firms took notice & started putting up wages for drivers & giving decent kit with a decent spec with some home comforts i.e. working night heaters ( no idea if mine works or not never used it ) air con fridge as standard
Many years ago when my dad worked they were due to get a pay rise which would also be back dated several month yep they were all tailing about this he said he was going to buy a fridge for the house he was asked why did you want one of them as you only keep lettuce in them ( this was late 50ās early 60ās so not really that long ago ) now how many would live with out a fridge in there home ( ok I live without a TV or microwave in mine )
Surely if they want us all to eat healthy then a fridge should be provided to help with this & lets face it most of us are eating healthy a small price to pay to keep your drivers & look after there welfare
As a lot of the good cafeās have closed it is becoming more difficult to eat out at a sensible price all week & places to park ( but that another story )

If the truck is used by a day man and a night man and no one ever / seldom sleeps/ overnights in the truck then iād say a fridge is a luxury in that motor . Would be a great perk for anyone driving it to keep their cans of pop , bottles of water and sandwiches cool . A perk but not really necessary .
If the truck is to be used in a situation where a driver is being asked to do night outs on a regular basis ( lets say 3 nights a week or more ) Iād certainly think a lot more of my employer if they fitted a fridge to the unit Iād be driving . I like to cook my own grub , like cold water and juice to drink and cold milk to put in my tea and coffee .
If your employer goes the extra mile and fits their (your ) truck out with fridges , microwaves and inverters to me that shows respect for the drivers and any employer that goes the extra mile for their staff could reasonably expect their drivers to go the extra mile for them . A happy and content driver will do more than one that feels unappreciated and forgotten about .

No no animal, itās ok now, theyāve sorted it, the problem was not enough female drivers, apparently it was nothing to do with pay, hours, complicated rules & regs, conditions, provisions, facilities or fridges.

When I heard I just laugh as well as we all know different
Although to be fair me boss has just recently advertised for 2 drivers & did struggle a bit but hey it is working some weekends & night shift ( well starting mainly 22.00 ish ) as it is fridge work night out average pay for this area he was willing to take new drivers as well ( we have just being given a pay rise ) donāt max hour out etc
Rikki-UK:
I am not implying that drivers shouldnāt have these Luke in fact made it clear that in this day and age they should,
Just pointing out the reality in law all that has to be provided is a bunk if sleeping in the cab, everything else is an extra- acceptable in this day and age ? probably not but that is all that is required
But the fact remains that there is nothing to say that employers must provide a fridge. What we would like and the reality of what is required to be provided are two different things. Personally before a fridge becomes a mandatory bit of equipment I would like to see a minimum interior cab size and working night heaters become law, I see them as essential rather than a fridge. I still know of guys having to cope with fold down bunks behind the seats in day cabs that to my mind is unacceptable not having a fridge is an inconvienience in comparison
Fair enough but I still think your post was unhelpful and badly timed! Oh am a top tip for anyone having to put up with a broken night heater, leave the engine running all night, Iāve found that usually focuses their mind
If you play that clip, you will see the Beaver walking into our office. ( Iām a celeb donāt you know.)
Are you sure? I looked at this clip bbc.co.uk/news/business-37212432 but I couldnāt see anyone walking? (the one linked in the twitter link I posted doesnāt work for some reason)
I do understand why bigger companies donāt spec fridges etc as there is a good chance that they will be abused and then others will complain that theyāre dirty/broken/whatever, itās just another load of hassle they donāt need.
As Iāve said, I like to look after my drivers and I would also rather have a proper factory fridge installation rather than have things plugged into power outlets or have drivers wiring stuff in themselves. A bad wiring job often results in a smoldering pile of ash.
Iāve always been quite strict about nothing being wired into my lorries and no holes drilled into them, I have had drivers want to fit a fancy stereo or extra lights and I have paid to have them done properly, or done it myself if it wasnāt too complicated, the only stipulation I had was that anything that needed a hole drilling was to stay in the lorry if they left the job or swapped lorries.

This is exactly the reason our lot put the tv bracket in our trucks. It was costing over a grand for new head linings to fix the holes, and we had a problem with a warranty claim for something unrelated due to Volvo finding a drivers dodgy wiring job elsewhere. One fool even used the tacho head to power his CB
