Mr Penn You obviously have too much time on your hands to sit and watch for me to come online and state facts. To be perfectly honest with you if the cap fits then wear it. You have tried to belittle not just me but the Company and our Drivers. We do not care what you think you are not even in the Market for employment within our area. I do not class Drivers nor anyone as as Ignorant stupid lazy or spongers. I do not have the time nor inclination to discuss with you any further the politics of Employment at any wage. You are not constructive with your critism and your attempts at being funny would not put you in the market for a career in Comedy. I have the utmost respect as I have previously stated for our Employees and other LGV 1 Drivers with morals that would work for a pay packet at the end of the week.

This is totally ridiculous for Class 1 work, even in these ‘Ard Times’, my recent 7.5ton work (2.5yrs) was paying more. Feel sorry for the guys/gals who might have paid an arm & a leg to get their ticket and then find that this rate of pay is what they are rewarded with.
@NewLad, this is the first post of this thread and it was about exactly what you have asked but unfortunately throughout the whole 8 pages no straight answer has been forthcoming. Sadly the employer concerned has taken a very patronising and dare I say offensive stance in a vain attempt to defend themselves from a group of obviously ignorant, stupid, lazy current & retired sponging lorry driver’s (All words lesleyanne has used in her response post’s) who really should have better thing’s to do than raise the issue of the exploitative employer’s mindset that we should be eternally grateful to them for providing the gift of employment at whatever paltry remuneration they seem fit to offer. Also as we keep being reminded that this company has been around for 111 yrs and it would appear that the poster was there at the beginning as well, I sure we stopped sending 10yr olds up chimney’s for sixpence a day over 100 yrs ago but they still think £6.20per hr for Class 1 work is a fair rate, Victorian work values still exist in Dover apparently.
For all the new entrant’s to the industry who have invested a lot of time and money into gaining the highly valued vocational licence I wish all good luck and safe trips and can assure you that not all employers will devalue your personal investment in such a callous and brazen way.
Good Luck to you all

Dave Penn;
Lesleyanne, your company pays insulting wages and you clearly cannot see anything wrong with what you pay your drivers. There is no defence for the rates you pay - they are appalling - period. The fact that some misguided drivers will work for that rate does not make it right, fair or decent. Drivers do a professional job, often in difficult circumstances. If you understood that, rather than treating them as an expendable business necessity, you would treat them with more respect.
At no point have you been able to put forward a convincing argument for the derisory wage structure you have, simply because there isn’t one. One or two drivers on here may agree with you, but they are the drivers that are happy to work for poor money and that think £260/week with a few quid for minding a lorry in a layby all night is a good wage. They can’t see past the tax man, and don’t realise that their penison, sick pay, holiday pay is much reduced because their wage is actually much smaller than they realise.
I wish the drivers that work for you all the best - they really deserve a break if they are as good as you say they are.
Please give them one and pay them what their efforts that help to pay YOUR wage merits.
I earn my wages I do not rely on my Drivers working to pay my Wages.
So why do you have drivers at all then?
Maybe because we run a multi Business from our Premises
Which means that part of your business (and part of your profit that pays at least part of YOUR wage and/or company profit) must come from drivers’ activities…and without them PART of your ‘multi business’ wouldn’t exist. So really your comment above, as with all your comments so far, doesn’t answer the question asked.
Oh dear, you really are getting yourself confused in your efforts to defend the appalling wages you pay!!! Your current rate is £0.12 more than the legal minimum. So what you are saying is that the class 1 drivers that work in (part of) your business are worth 12p more per hour to you than the absolute legal minimum you can pay someone over 21 years old. It says a lot about how much you value your drivers in reality doesn’t it?
Do you think £6.20 per hour is a fair wage for a Class 1 driver?
I don’t see where fairness or value comes into it or ability to buy a house or less than a picker or shelf stacker and all the rest of the drivel being spouted here.
Yes It’s a ■■■■ rate, but they have enough drivers, so the market has decided.
From there point of view why pay more? Don’t you lot operate the same policy when you spend your own money?
Jeez… If I threw my tuppence into this mix, it would represent an inflation-busting pay-rise!
That wagon above is older than my first MkIII Cortina I drove when I passed my car test in the 80’s!
Paper tachos? - I’m surprised it doesn’t have valves and clackity lights in it like one of those '60s sci-fi movies…
lesleyanne:
My Drivers all attained their Licenses when the costs were far less than they are today. My Drivers do not work Night Shifts. Our Drivers are covered by Insurance for any theft of cargo whilst in their care. I could kill someone in my car if I do not drive professionaly.
The Drivers are happy with their pay. quote=“NewLad”]Can you answer if you think it is fair that a order pickers with no skills can earn nearly double an hour working nights than one of your drivers? Do you think its fair that a forkie who was trained by the company can be paid double an hour on nights for tipping your driver at an RDC?
Or do you think it is fair, that a driver who has INVESTED, up to £3k of their own hard earned in training for their licence, is repaid £6.20ph for driving a truck and cargo worth £100,000’s and a machine that could kill someone if not driven professionally?
I only want an answer
[/quote]
Firstly Lesley I would like to thank you for taking the time to reply to me, however I didn’t ask if your drivers were happy with their wages, what I asked was do you think it is fair that a unskilled primate could do the job of a order picker (in the midlands might I add so “up norrrfff”) on double the hourly rate of one of your drivers.
So I again will ask you, do YOU (this means in your personal and professional opinion) think it is FAIR that a ORDER PICKER with NO skills can earn nearly double an hour working nights what your drivers do?
I also don’t doubt that you could kill someone while driving a car but your car doesn’t weigh 44tonnes and isn’t 60ft long.
I work for a company that has been around for over 150 years (The Co-operative Group) and they pay us a livable wage but they expect us to work for it! So unless your driver sit in the canteen for 12hrs a day (I don’t even think I would do that for £6.20ph) they are being robbed.
And @ Stevieboy308 do you not think the market is flooded with unskilled workers who could do shelf stacking or order picking?

I would speculate that this is a photograph of a vehicle at some type of truck show.

I wouldn’t bother, that is basic economics, you might as well try to explain the atomic properties of lithium.

Dave Penn;
OK think that’s game, set and match to me Once again you have shown how arrogant and patronising you are. Not once have I criticised your drivers or your company and I have only been very slightly critical of you because you have been unable to show where in any of my post’s I have said any of the things you keep accusing me of saying. Wouldn’t be surprised if you provide your drivers with secondhand IPad’s and a £5.00 bonus at Xmas to register on here to tell us how wrong we all are and that £6.20per hr is the new top rate and it’s great and we all need to get with the programme and live the dream
Regards
Dave Penn;
You have to remember dave she doesn’t need a reason as the company’s been going for 111 YEARS!!!
I’ve read all this topic and have to say the rate is terrible, I can’t see how she sleeps at night knowing she’s paying drivers that!
It’s people like her that have brought the industry down, with such a ■■■■ wage.
Just because your drivers are still working for you doesnt mean they agree with the wage, they may have no other choice.
I personally would be ashamed of myself is I knew I was taking the poss like that!
The Crusader in this picture is a very smart restoration of, IIRC, an ex military 6x4, although CVT did run some 4x2 Crusader’s back in the day alongside some NG & SK Mercs; Also this truck did a run down to Italy a few years ago along with a number of other restored classics, F88’s/89’s, 141’s, 3300’s I’m sure someone off TNUK was involved with it and did a diary about the trip. I don’t believe this Crusader was ever run by CVT but the restorer had some link to them and did it in their livery as he remembered them as a child.

Love it! the Crusader could still give a good account of its self on the road now(along with it’s much maligned stablemate the Marathon) a bit thirsty by todays standards but capable of good journey times,B/L not British Leyland but Before Limiter

The market may well be flooded with people who could do unskilled work, but the market works to would rather than could.
I also think your confusing that higher wages means greater value rather than that’s how much they have to pay to get the quality and staff turnover that they’re happy with.
People want to be truck drivers, I wouldn’t of thought many people want to be a picker or shelf stacker etc

Yes we do employ 1 Polish Driver who is treated with the same respect as any other National. He is happy in his work and is a credit to our Company and the Polish People.

Maybe CVT have Polish drivers ? Just a thought unless I have missed something
Are the rest Lithuanians ? Or just general people who can’t get a job elsewhere because of these hard times ■■ Still I don’t suppose you will know the details of there life and past and current circumstances
Im on £8.50hr for class 2 hiab and I think that’s crap compared to what I have been on in other jobs.
I like many new guys will not go take a class 1 test for £1000ish if at the end of it all I am only on a min wage. It’s a cleaners wage you must see that ?
Just admit to the people it’s a crap wage but it’s to put more in your pocket. It’s simple thats all we want to hear is the real truth, then this thread will be over. A little honesty never hurt anyone

Could be true that, or that they are ex agency drivers who had too many days off or F’ed people around previously in some way ? Or they had no good references so there only foot back up the ladder is this wage ■■
Who knows none of us will ever know
Hell it is a stepping stone I suppose and alot of new guys need a stepping stone
Seems like it Bigvern1. I reckon this will go on for a long time but will encourage our Drivers to enrol and have their input when they return to base.

I’m sure your drivers will toe the company line once registered, afterall the boss will be watching
You’ll have to forgive me if I don’t join in with the lynch mob mentality but I’ve never been one for running with the herd.
I spoke to a friend of mine who lives in Coombe Valley today, who I’ve known since the Kepstowe days and though he has never worked for CVT he knows people who do, and he says they get between £480 and £520 a week paid into the bank per week, and also they have a very low turnover of drivers.
I would say that pay is right in the middle of the ballpark for tramping work in Dover.
I look at it this way I can live well on 300 quid but will do a driving job were im out all week for 440 quid not much but all I do is steer the thing and plan my rout some say its low but its still more than being on the spanners which took 5 years to learn and you go home cold aching and dirty.

Harry, we keep going back to this, as I’ve said before, we all like to know what’s in the bank at the end of the week, but if you’re on holiday, £250 just is not going to cut it, and that’s what 6.20 per hour x 40 works out to. I don’t know what hours they’re guarenteed (which is usually what holiday is paid on), but I’m guessing it’s 40hrs since someone said they’re on overtime after 8hrs.
Yes, if it falls down anywhere it will be on holiday pay.
But the fact that they have a low turnover of drivers suggests that employees are content to work there and they are possibly better placed to make judgement than keyboard warriors who would have to Google “Coombe Valley” to even know where it was.
