Sorry but you are just a kid to me ( have kids 22 & 23 ) yep both work son has always been at school uni then work although did hate his job although earned more than me but moved 100 miles away for a better job ( although not much more money so now in Edinburgh ) daughter at 19 moved 50mile away for work so this thing about leaving when young is not new as I did this 30+ years ago when 17
So as Rog say kid=younger than it is a term
When I done mine it was funded although slightly different to you as was on incapacity at the time but had to have been on it for at least 13 weeks ( so how did you manage ) also had to have letter from at least 1 employer to say that if I had this that there was a position for me & they would take me on but not an agency
There is a "small employer " in West Kilbride btw
Have you been upto the Airport & are " Home & Away " still there if they are go in & speak with them ( Robin & Shona Clarke ) they do have small vans+ or did a few years ago it may be a start in driving ok maybe not what you wish but it may help
Yep seen a kid in 1 of the places I load from he just young when I looked at him asked if he was out of nappies yet his reply was just at 20 he did look younger thou but take as compliment you will be glad in 20 years time
Maybe this "employ a teenager while they still know everything " applies
Sam on 1 of the threads I am know as the kid or new kid on the block but dont really mind as I have learnt a lot for them but then again 1 of them did get his new lorry ( yep still has it ) nearly 61 years ago
Hope you can learn for all of the post even if it is criticism constructive or not
Good luck with your training hope it dont take too long like mine did then I did have to fight with DVLA to get my licence back took over 4 mth after my medical & that was after being a bit economical with them it is on here if you wish to look it up well that was my Cat C
Have you looked at ESF funding that is available until 2013

Sorry, maybe I shouldn’t of took kid as a personal insult and more as a term, you’re right. I also thrive on constructive criticism, i always want to do better.
I asked the Job Centre if the letter from an agency would be enough and she said that it would be up to Jim Mair Training to decide that (they must obviously work closely with Jim Mair Training) so I guess that’s the reason why it happened on a Agency letter, and even then I wasn’t guaranteed a job, it basically just said that they will try to fit me with work wherever suitable/possible.

who is this available too?
All that I am aware of ask at the job centre
i asked there and they said no grants or funding available as im already working
Yeah you will need to fund it yourself if you’re working then I think. If you live in Scotland then you can ask ILA for help.
I asked my advisor if I should continue looking for work while waiting for my course and she said; “well, for us to fund it for you, you can’t find work, but at the same time you need to keep looking for work in order for us to pay your jobseekers”
Good luck to you Sam. I’m in the process of doing mine, got a second test next Tuesday.
Its cost me £1170 so far and another £350ish on Tuesday all paid for by myself.
I’m lucky I have a reasonable job 30k a year but its boring (and I do mean boring) which call me stupid but I will be leaving eventually after passing this LGV course to go and work either twice as long hours to get anywhere near what I’m earning now or taking a big pay cut but it’s what I want to do, at first I will stay here and do a bit of agency work at weekends to get a bit of experience even if I gotta work for minimum wage or free if I have to as the experience will be my reward, I’ll then go on to do the HIAB certificate and then class 1 (HGV) next year.
At the end of the day it doesn’t matter who pays for your course just get on with it and do your best, it’s good to see someone that actually wants to work for a living. Myself and I’m sure 90% of other people on here can think of far far worse ways our fantastic government waste our tax money on!!
And before people qoute or ask yes I am for wanting to leave my nice warm 30 grand a year office job to work my arse off and get covered in ■■■■ every day, but I like to actively work I’ve worked hard for the last 22 years since I left school (take out the last 3 years) I’ve been sat here doing F all for me it’s time to get back in the real world before I die of boredom
A well known company that I used to work for paid for me to do my class 1 back in 1999. The only thing that I had to do was to sign an agreement that I worked for them for a pre determined time otherwise I would have to pay the costs of gaining my licence back.

GOOD LUCK!!
Hi mate! First of all, I’m sure you’ll do jolly well in your next test.
Secondly, thanks for the kind words. My Dad and Uncle (both truckers) have asked my why i want to go into the industry (it’s their fault!) as it’s boring and i’ll get sick of it after a good 30 odd year…they’re probably right, but like you said, it’s what I want to do and just because times may get tough, i won’t and shouldn’t turn my back on it.
If the satisfaction of driving a truck is enough for you and you’re happy with it then why not? I wouldn’t work for free though mate, i often thought about it. I’m 18 and going to be struggling massively to find a job in the industry to begin with but 1) it’s not fair on the guys who are working their ■■■ off. 2) the company can start being wide and take on the approach that if they can find people to work free then why should they pay some other guy £400 a week or something? 3) it’s not fair on the guys who work for money themselves really, because if we all go to work for free for experience, we’ll put them out of a job, house and home.
Hope to see you put some sort of a diary up of your training/test

asked the firm i’m with what are the chances of being put through c+e, answer was we have done it in the past but no need for it at the moment ok that’s a no then.
two weeks later there advertising for c+e drivers internally wasn’t a happy bunny
I currently have a job as a mechanic in a local garage on the island for £15k/year. To be honest I hate it, I hate my boss, I hate the trade. I want to be out driving lorries. I don’t care if I’m doing multi drop or tramping I just want a job driving.
The biggest problem for me is that I live on an island and getting anywhere is limited by the ferries. Yes, there is a local haulage firm, John MacKirdy, but he hasn’t any vacancies at present and the next nearest ‘big’ firm would be McKerral from Campbeltown but thats on the mainland.
I think I may just have to keep driving the odd weekend for my Father-In-Law in his 7 1/2 tonner until either I can convince the wife to move to mainland (very unlikely) or hopefully maybe get a call from MacKirdy’s. Gives me more time to save up for my C+E!!
I had my fortnightly appointment with the job centre today and I asked my advisor a few questions. The reason I am getting the course paid for me is because I will have been on Job Seekers for 13 weeks. At 13 weeks I then become eligible for them to pay it for me so for all the people who were asking, ‘you’ve only signed on twice and are having it paid for you…’ now you know why.
Another thing, I need to pay for my medical and re-sits if needed. So how much is a medical and how much is a resit on average?
Hi Sam, my medical was £60. Re test fee is £115 plus the use of the lorry, I just had my second test today and it cost me £175 for lorry and the £115 test fee. I did pass this time though.
