KID = anyone younger than me
Being called KID by someone older is getting more rare these days
Being called KID rather than something probably more apropriate = very nice
Being called STUPID KID = not nice

Sam Millar:
I’m being told to steady on by a MOD by saying I don’t appreciate being referred to as a kid? Are you having a bloody laugh?
Sam,
No, I’m not having a laugh, I offered you some advice which is yours to evaluate, then take or leave as you see fit.
Sam Millar:
I might be 18 but i ain’t gonna stand for no [zb] off some men who think i’ve been living on their money for a good couple of years then all of a sudden have had everything done for me.
Please try reading my post again, I made no comment about that.
FYI, I’m glad you have this opportunity, but I’ll repeat that free funding isn’t available all over the UK.
Actually Sam, it’s matter of record on here that I’ve offered exactly the same advice as dodester. In your case dodester beat me to it.
It’s not as if you went in there and beat them over the head until the offer was forthcoming, so maybe those knocking you should consider that. I’ll add that I haven’t the slightest problem with you receiving funding, because they wouldn’t have offered it if you weren’t entitled to it.
It’s perfectly possible that some of the reactions have been caused by the sheer surprise of posters finding out that free funding is available in your area, which I think adds to my comment that it’s not generally available in all areas of the UK.
As for my “steady on” comment, it’s simply a turn of phrase and from your reaction to it, I’ll guarantee that you haven’t taken it as I meant it. Sorry for any misunderstanding.
No one likes that mate not even me just let it run of your back like water there is a lot of bitterness about funding for some reason It took me months to get it sorted but hey if all goes well you wont be out of work long .
As for being a Kid well im a Kid of 54 at heart anyway and you are one kid who wont end up sat playing the x box all day / or smoking dope / . As for being ribbed by older drivers well even though im 54 I was on training on a new job last night Motor way work Tipping tarmac and i got hell from the guys who were laying the tarmac ( some a lot younger than me ) for the first 15 mins once they knew I was a new driver …took it all in my stride and took the p%%s back and got on fine with them once they saw it didnt bother me …
BEST OF LUCK

I don’t mind any banter and I know that there will be lots of it in the job.
But like I already mentioned, I just got the impression that people were looking down their nose at me because it was being funded for me and I was on the dole. I worked from when I left School in 09 right up until a few weeks ago so it’s not like someone was making out about me sitting on my backside and them paying my way, and some even questioning the validity of my statement about it being funded by the Government.
Anyway - I attended the appointment I had today and filled out paperwork and she said that it would be October before it started.

If it was the case then it would not make sense because there are many many different types of funded courses around the UK for those between 16 and 25 and most of those are without the guarantee of a job at the end of them.
Good luck to you Sam, make the most of what you have been given mate. For a “kid” of your age, your determination to retrain and find employment is admirable. All the best.
Here’s my story about how I never got ■■■■ all from paying my tax.
Took ill with Crohns disease in 1997 having obtained a HND in electronic publishing worked as an apple mac operator at the time. I was then also diagnosed with CKD stage 4 that means I will be on dialysis in the future at some time.
Got sick money for 6 months having been made redundant after illness, Doctors gave me pills which suppress the symptoms. This means being found “fit to work”, now knew I was basically unemployable with these conditions.
Spent 3 grand of my own money training to be an ADI a very difficult thing with less than 10 in every 100 making it through the qualifing tests.
Done this for 10 years until the bank sponsored recession kicked making a viable living at it into touch.
Spent £2400 of my own money getting class 1 and 2, the guy who was my training partner was an ex junkie getting his course paid for, but with no chance of a resit being paid for. He drove the artic into B+Qs car park near bishopbriggs test centre after getting the first roundabout wrong. Failed can’t say I shed any tears.
Having paid class 2 self employed national insurance contributions I was not entitled to JSA and the job centre ■■■■■■■■ denied me my NI contributions being paid for. They said I could not choose LGV driving as part of my “job search criteria” as I would have no chance of getting a job at it and I had qualifications that superceded it.
So I could not even get my N.I stamp paid for by the system that I had paid into all my working life.
Anyway now working on an on going contract with an agency, they had a big list of “have you any of these illnesses boxes to tick”. Didn’t tick those boxes as by law they have no ■■■■■■■ right to know I have underlying medical conditions. I have found out the hard way the state will give decent people ■■■■ all if you have such conditions and you won’t get a ■■■■■■■ job if you open your trap about them.
So in conclusion some ■■■■■■■■ get their HGV courses paid for and some cannot even sign to get their national insurance contributions credited.
Best of luck “not”.
Regardless of how its funded i wish you the best of luck, its a big step car to lorry and will be even tougher for you as you have limited road experience as it is, but work hard and you’ll do just fine.
As for being refered to as a kid, well where do i start. I’m 22 but look about 17-18, still get asked for ID when i pull up in the lorry for ciggies . Get use to being called a kid, child whatever you like because its all you’ll hear. I’ve had people ask why i’m not at school, asked for directions once and was told where the primary school is, asked if i was driving the lorry when turned up at the site office then when i said yes been looked at like i’ve just crawled out of a sewer, you dont look old enough, are you on work experience, the list goes on mate. Take it on the chin, laugh about it, then when you get into that impossibly tight gap people start giving you respect but it takes a long time. But god help you if you bite.

Thank you mate. Are you the Difflok from YouTube?
Good luck to you Sam…I work really hard but dont mind some of my tax funding your’e training, at least you want to work. The people that get on my bloody nerves are those that claim incapacity benefit when theres nowt wrong with them and they are just plain ■■■■ lazy and just want to sit at home all day

I totally agree here.
Good luck Sam, keep us posted!!
p.s. I’m only across the water from you
Bloody hell, the JC told me no chance! Hence a wopping big credit card debt that paid for my class 1 / 2
My sarcasm, young man, was in response to your replies to others, many of who had posted helpful advice, including myself on a different thread. You have shown you are not a daft lad, but I fail to understand why you “aspire” to be a lorry driver.
You mention studying Aviation & Aeronautics to become a pilot. Many of us over 40’s fell into this job because we were not given the chance of good basic education or further education like that. None of my posts have been derogatory or of a jealous nature, just because you have gained some free government funding, most other posters have been quite congratulatory too.
I am sure I speak for others on this thread and wish you well, and maybe you can put your training diary up for other new drivers to read and learn from.

My Qualifications weren’t good enough and I didn’t have enough personal savings or funding to continue down the Aviation root.
Being a lorry driver for me, is a childhood dream like being a fireman. We don’t know how well paid these jobs are until we grow up - at that point, it doesn’t matter.

Blimmy didnt expect you to come out with something like that, but your very true.

On a serious note though, this is what I have a chosen as a career and I know there will be days I’ll be ■■■■ ■■■■■■ off in the job but I can’t or won’t turn my back on the job because it has it’s low points, i’m here for the long haul.
