I got my licence for free in the Armed Forces few years ago.
Never used my licence for years, then decided to start driving last year.
If itâs going help lads that have genuinely fell on hard times through no fault of there own.
Then I donât see what the problem is.
If itâs to help lay a bouts get another 6 months on the social.
Then itâs wrong.
Would driving had been my first choice of employment? No
I didnât want to become a driver but have made the most of it and made what I think is decent money for sitting on my a**e.
But have had to make sacrifices been away 5 days a week.
To be honest I think driving is what you make of it and if you can handle the lifestyle of trucking.
well said forces man basically what ive been trying to say and after 30yrs doing the job europe n.america/canada theres been a few nights out l.ol
Lets face it the job ainât hard.
Paid ÂŁ10 hour for average 65-70 hours a week plus night out money. for doing an average 40hours real work.
Itâs just not suited to a lot of peopleâs lifestyles and family commitments.
The way I look at it as I would rather be doing 4 nights away making decent money in the bank.
Spend quality time at the weekend together.
Instead of working days for tesco or another firm on shift patterns never really spending a day off together.
Typical right wing Tory type nonsense. I got my licence off the DSS about 10 years ago. Living in the West coast of Scotland bugger all jobs, worked in factories when i left school. Agency work building computers take you on for a week, lay you off, take you back on never stable. By the late 90âs all those factories gone much cheaper to outsource to the far east. Did variety of jobs, gutting fish down the harbour until they moved all that away and various other jobs. In and out of work, always skint. Had done a bit of van driving and was in the DSS, and they asked if i would be interested in driving HGVâs was a lot of jobs going i jumped at the chance.
Passed my test on a Friday, the Monday was signing on with an agency working the same night doing Co-Op, did that for awhile landed a FT job about three months later with DHL. Can moan about the cost the supposed freebie but since that time Ive worked FT apart from being on the dole again in about 2008 for 2 months at the height of the credit crunch. Basically since i got my license contributed a large amount of tax, claimed nothing, no tax credits, no housing benefit, the state isnt paying for my childs school dinners, i pay full council tax. Had a decent life, got a decent flat, got a decent car, can give my daughter everything she needs. I am glad there is schemes to help people to better themselves.
But these right wingers would call me a scounger would rather i had spent the last 10 years like the 10 years before in and out of work. Working part time (since most jobs seem to be) claiming tax credits, getting some housing benefit etc⌠Could say i should have saved up but unless you live at home with your parents and have no kids, in and out of part time jobs struggle to get by half the time never mind save any money.
Talking about wasting money, what about all these other get back to work schemes, come in for 6 months do CVâs look for work, what a waste of time. How much do these training companies get paid by the government. Maybe if they stopped wasting time doing that and looked at the labour market see what was needed and trained people in these skills like HGV driving, apprenticeships for older people in skilled trades would actually get people off the dole and give them a life.

Pretty much what I was saying Kenny; this particular Tory thinks you done right, respect to you sir.
And BTW I totally agree with your last comment. Far too much of the training budget is wasted on schemes which are designed more to look good, win votes and put bums on seats than actually solve skill shortages.

, yeh? really?
Have another look on page 2, your lack of response to my other post suggests the contrary.
Also if you are so concerned so much about the UK economy, the Social situation and the state of the Inland Revenue why did you move to Canada, I would have thought someone as opinionated and evidently as patriotic as yourself would choose to stay and contribute in his own country rather than move abroad.
I paid for all my license myself and I will admit when you hear âI got this out of them and thisâ it â â â â â â me right off⌠However I do think if people get the funding for a license they should be made to pay it back once they have secured full time employment!!
Some people will agree, some wonât⌠But hey ho

If I had to re pay mine back I would be struggling to live with the pay & rest of bills I have ( no hp most just normal household ) but hey dont matter if I cant buy food at least i am working ) although in a couple mth time things will be a little easier )
As said mine was funded about 7 years ago (cat C ) then CE soon after but did have to have at least 2 offers of jobs & give up the back to work help which was available to me due to being on the sick had been driving vans & 7.5t so just really upgraded my licence with some help if I had not gone on the sick & was working would I have paid for it then Yes defo have I been working since yep apart form a short time after a stay in hospital was ordered sorted out then back to work
Sorry if this offends you but the lack of jobs here in the North East as in parts of Scotland as Kenny said this funding does help some
You will always get some that dont want to work & will find way to avoid this but there are plenty that would like to work but need some help to get there as some are there through no fault of there own just circumstances have put them there those are the ones who dont know how to play the system so get very little
When I done my HGV training they were giving out FLT courses to all although it was a 2 week course that you had to attend some help with travel cost was available but you have to prove this there was also other things involved so they could justify it all
They should stop some of these courses provide real help to people for real jobs regulate the agencies create more jobs ( as Gordon Brown was doing unlike David Cameron who has cut them ) but that is another argument altogether ok maybe I am a bit bitter as I did lose my job as a direct result of this government as well as 4 of my friends that same week but that is defo another discussion not for here

Iâm from the North East and they is certainly no shortage of drivers here, how long have they been putting people through their licenses? Surely they need to start going in another direction now (different trade)
I know of a person who got his class one at least 6 years ago and has never drove a wagon since⌠Itâs wrong and gets peopleâs backs up

Yep it does get peoples back up & yep they should & are starting to ( home care work ) so that will be flooded soon
I have been driving most of the time since I past my test so it was a help to me although I know not all have
Where bout in the North East

I understand where youâre coming from; but surely itâs no different to folk taking a university degree, then another, then another etc. And then never do anything with them; so-called âprofessional studentsâ in other words. How about these âartistsâ who produce what to you and me are piles of junk but because some high-brow oxygen thieves deem them âperformance artâ they get thousands of pounds of taxpayers money thrown at them. Where do you draw the line?
I would suggest that on balance there are probably far more people who have benefited from vocational training, be it HGV, FLT or whatever, and gone on to a better level of paid employment than they otherwise could have than there are âprofessional scroungersâ as someone else put it, who just go through the motions to keep out of doing anything better than watching Jeremy Kyle and smoking dope all day.
When i did my HGV through the DSS, it wasnât as simple as i want a HGV, ok here you go. The training company get paid X amount for you to do your test, if you then you work for a period of i think its 6months afterwards they get a bonus.
The DSS once you have a proof of a job refer you to a training company, you go meet the training company they talk to you about it, explain career and make sure your serious if your not they will refuse to take you on. If they are happy they give you the theory test stuff and ask you to come back in a week or so, they will then get you to do mock theory test if its evident you havenât been studying and get crap marks your off the course. Depends on your progress but they expect you to be able to pass mock test several times in the office before they will book you in for the theory, they will help explain things your not sure of. After awhile if you cant pass mock tests off the course. They only pay for one theory test if you fail that would have to go back pay for it yourself.
Once pass theory then you get booked in practical driving side, the course if meant to be a week and a half but they do it in a week, means if you fail the test is still a bit of funding for a another day or soâs practice but you would have to pay for the actual test.
Once passed then you have think its a month to get a job, then every month you have a job got to get a form signed and take it to the training agency.
So its not quite like any tom â â â â or harry gets to do their HGV gotta show willing and put effort in.
My dad has been an HGV driver since the 70s but got his Class 1 for ÂŁ75 about 12 years ago. He paid the full amount and the government gave him a refund minus ÂŁ75.
I totally understand people fall on hard times etc,
Can we just note this isnât my thread I was just expressing my opinion lol

Im near the end of my funded training and not once has anyone said theres any conditions except you dont take the â â â â & study theory or get booted off.
theres a month of college before theory and practical so you dont really get people turning up just to get dole off their back.
all the people ive met want to become drivers.
We appreciate eagerbeaverâs contributions very much.

Similar thing with my missus and her PSV. She went for interview, and was put on a placement with a local bus company; did all the NVQ stuff with them and then went for the practical training. she failed the first time, though in mitigation sheâd only had three days training and that was double-manned so effectively only a day and a half. Training company wasnât up to much either, and the instructor had a definite downer on women drivers.
She raised this issue with the company she was with, and the second time round she had 4 days training just her and instructor, with a different firm; she passed easily. Sheâs not with that firm any more as they lost some contracts and let her go, but within 48 hours she was taken on by another firm with better money and conditions, and sheâs still there.
As you said above Kenny, youâve more than re-imbursed the cost of your training through your increased payment of taxes, and in cases like that I donât think you should have to pay it back.
University students have a loan they do not need to pay back until they are earning X amount so why are DWP training courses not done on the same system ?
Because some filthy rich Aristocrats have calculated that its more profitable for their corporations by funding training to keep the logistics industry flowing. More drivers equals lower average rates of pay, more taxable income , driver fines , vehicle manufacturing , fuel etc etc
why would it bother them to pay 2k to get unemployed person driving when it costs over 3.5k a year in jobseekers allowance ?
its a pointless debate ⌠funding unemployed that are willing to work costs the Government nothing long term.
ROG:
University students have a loan they do not need to pay back until they are earning X amount so why are DWP training courses not done on the same system ?
Simple. Because the salary threshold over which student loans are paid back is ÂŁ21000; even a driver earning ÂŁ30000 p.a. would only be paying back ÂŁ67 per month if the same parameters applied.
I suspect that setting up an administration scheme to recover the loans would not prove to be cost effective; and I also suspect that if it was put into place and proved thus, the people who moaned about DWP freebies being given out would be the same ones moaning about the government wasting taxpayers money by clawing back working mensâ earnings.
As my old boss told me, when drivers STOP moaning itâs time to worry.
