Just an observation

so i am in the driver class then as i can driver the eaton box, not without some starting problems when i first got it though i recall several blocking off traffic lights as i tried in vain to change on the accelerator once i had moved off just for it to slip out of gear and stop :smiling_imp: . but i will say once mastered was a pleasure to drive :sunglasses:

That’s the thing with the constant mesh boxes and the Twin Splitter especially, as 44tonne ton said, training is needed to get to know how they work, but you, like most of us, just got the keys thrown at you and had to learn for yourself, amazing when you think about it :unamused:

A wise man in transport once told me that it wasn’t the cost of driver training that worried him, it was the cost of not training his drivers

He never banked on the DCPC arising !!! And them Eatom twin splits are crap, i know you don’t have to use your clutch, and they just slip in and its great. But if you wanna get going they’re a pain in the arse. Yes i’m a boot down merchant, and i love auto’s. Foot down go !! Even four over fours and you know where you are, no ■■■■■ futting around !!

Didn’t the eaton go the way of the dodo and British leyland for a reason.
Some people where fanatical lovers of it but it wasn’t a patch on what the Germans and swedes produced.

The reason they disappeared was because our friends on “the mainland” thought they were too noisy… :unamused:

I doubt they could hear them from there !!

That depends on who’s driving them! :grimacing:

It was the noise from the shafts inside that never met EEC regulations, not the crunching or the swearing by the driver who managed to find the 375th neutral that the Twin Splitter was famous for

It went the way of the dodo because the roadranger was/is better.Simples. :bulb:
But the Germans and the Swedes were mainly known for heavy slow synchros like the in the F10 etc and the ecosplit bag of bolts :unamused: except boxes like the constant mesh ZF 6-90 used in the big DAF’s etc.

Which shows that it probably had more to do with even more of ze German drivers being in the licence holders group than the Brits more than any noise issues with proper boxes. :smiling_imp:

By ze vay zey even needed a steering wheel put in a tank instead of levers to steer the thing.Let alone a semi auto box too. :open_mouth:

MAN daf and iveco used fullers for a long time and the twin splitter

WTF would you want to make the job harder? Twin Splitters are for old timers with rose tinted specs about the ‘good old days’…good in their day, but technology has moved on…do you guys still have a telephone at home you wind up and a black and white TV and a wireless?

Can’t beat a decent auto box from the likes of Volvo etc, and it’s a ■■■■ sight easier and more efficient than 98% of drivers…

i think every truck should have the merc eps powershift :open_mouth: that would sort the men from the boys :sunglasses:

why has this thread become the Eaton twin splitter thread?
the job hasn’t gone [zb]ed because the industry dosn’t use a certain type a gearbox.
it has gone down the pan because of a variety of issues.

imagine you lot in parliament. “Mr Speaker, the Euro is collapsing, it is the duty of the house to debate the future of the european union, the euro, and how our great nation can overcome this dire problem.”

order, order, the house will hear from the right honourable mr trucknetuk.

“mr speaker, this dire situation that the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and Northern Ireland, its near neighbours of the European Union, the commonwealth, and the whole world could have been avoided if young Dave could have only driven a twin splitter”.

FFS get back on track.

Why? You just preselect your gear and clutch in when required!

The old sk mercs with eps could become a bit temptimental with age. I wrote a bus off on blackheath due to a combination of stupidity and a temptimental eps in an old 2544sk.
Without sounding like a mad old fool who sits writing letters to the daily telegraph all day I think to a certain extent there is a general lack of pride and responsibility for our own actions among lots of British society.
When I go to work I try my hardest to do as much as possible everyday and if I damage or mess something up it realy grates on me but I see lots of drivers just jump in the truck and tear off and if they damage stuff throughout the day the don’t seem to care but if the boss brings it up it’s always someone else’s fault.

Its become an Eaton Twin Split thread because it highlights some of what went wrong with our industry.

As shown (or is it shewn) here, only proper truck drivers can drive ETS’s and their forebears and equivalents, for that and many other reasons (like hard work) numpties and licence holders kept out of the job.

This had a two fold effect, it kept the roads safer and the job far more pleasant as numpties couldn’t cope, and kept the number of drivers in line with available jobs.

Going back over the years the best paid jobs invariably involved muck, bulllets, hard graft and basic working trucks and needed lorry drivers…hence the phrase all flash no cash was coined as licence holders chased truck badges which impressed small boys and other licence holders.

I really don’t understand the worship of this new automated manual carp, yes they’re fine on an open road and motorway, but ask 'em (Volvo excepted) to do some bloody work and they can’t cope unless the driver takes over and overrides the auto function.

I’d love to have an ETS again, or a 13 speed fuller, even a Roadranger, though preferably behind a proper ■■■■■■■■

Totally agree autos are great I wouldn’t go back to a manual through choice but you still need to override them sometimes to get the best from it. I drive a auto tipper but I select manual before I go off road without fail.
