Just an observation

Whilst reading the current wave of posts about drivers needing their hands held etc, I can get a sense of understanding about the usual posters, and see where they’re coming from. What seems to be ever more apparent, is the fact that this forum is split into two groups. Drivers and licence holders. Seems the former are low on numbers though, but we know who we are

I have found that if anyone is holding my hand whilst I am driving it causes a lapse of concentration and is dangerous and quite probably illegal

Also difficult to clean the windscreen

this argument can be said of various discussions on here

such as the Eaton twin Split gearbox

there are those that love them and think they are the best transmission in the world, then there are those that they think they are the work of the devil

this translates to those who can drive them properly, and those who can’t

You’re right Rob. I only drove a few but I thought they were ok. The ones that can drive them tend to be the drivers that don’t thrash a motor. Therefore getting the revs right. The ones that can’t drive a twin splitter are the licence holders that rag the arse off a motor

It’s probably an age issue as well, drivers who came from a transport background or kids who travelled with their old man in a lorry are a dying breed. I see that in some of our younger drivers who see it as just another occupation, it isn’t in their blood so as to speak.

spot on, youve either got it or you dont

I agree, thanks to health & safety we probably won’t get kids taking up truck driving to follow in their dads footsteps. I used to take my daughter with me and had to hide her on the top bunk. What a joke its become!!!

Who was the moron that invented the Eaton twin spliiter?

Probably the same ■■■■■ that thought an auto in a truck was a good idea!!!

at one time you could go straight for a class one licence. but it wasn’t just about learning to pass a test with a decent school. you learnt about the truck, the trailer. what did what, and why you needed to do the bits and pieces.
they also taught roping and sheeting, load security etc. this was all done by experienced old hands, not by people and organisations that throw enough money at the government to get jaupt approval. you can’t even drive a 7.5 tonner, or tow a trailer with a standard car licence.
all this beurocracy, and health and safety has done, is put this industry, and many other british institutions in line for failure.

Auto gear box on an icy hill, not too good.

Used to get send on jobs with the dreaded twin splitter, told agency i am not good on it,still send me there, grinding, stalling it all day long.

Had to do that 15/16 years ago, and hide back in the seat when we overtook another UC truck when I went out with a next door neighbour who did an agency job for United Carriers (remember them?)…
In fact I went out in the truck with my next door neighbour most Friday nights in the truck :sunglasses:

Into manual, select a low gear and careful on the gas, dump air onto the back axle if you can, jobs a good 'un…

Should driving schools take a step back and teach in an Eaton’? Just a thought…

I’d like to try out an Eaton twin splitter, just to see myself where we’ve come from to where technology is now, and if we’re any better off…?

The splitter is horrendous, and un-driveable,you have to get the right revs, and bang the stick in,common in ERF`s.Shunting trucks now in yards, thank goodness.

case rested :unamused:

just because you are not good enough to work out how to use the Eaton Twin Splitter, doesn’t make it a bad transmission

i think it actually says more about you than it does the Eaton :unamused:
