Whilst reading the current wave of posts about drivers needing their hands held etc, I can get a sense of understanding about the usual posters, and see where they’re coming from. What seems to be ever more apparent, is the fact that this forum is split into two groups. Drivers and licence holders. Seems the former are low on numbers though, but we know who we are

We?

you do what is required in the job you presently do,if you take my job as a example i.e drive from a-b,open doors, reverse on bay then id guess you class that as a licence holder, and anyone who does that job as a licence holder, but what would you clas the ex lowloader drivers, tipper drivers, container drivers, tautliner drivers, tilt driver, tanker driver, car transporter drivers etc,etc who now do that job, licence holders or drivers
is the person who presently drives a car transporter any more a driver than the now licence holder who previously drove car transporters for donkeys years

Who was the moron that invented the Eaton twin spliiter?

Don’t blame the designer he probably only did it to take the zb out of all those drivers who can’t understand the difference between a range change and a splitter on an ordinary roadranger 13 speed box and then couldn’t believe it when he found out how many there actually were. :open_mouth: :smiling_imp:

toby1234abc:
The splitter is horrendous, and un-driveable,you have to get the right revs, and bang the stick in,common in ERF`s.Shunting trucks now in yards, thank goodness.

Absolute nonsense you just weren’t a driver! Any driver worth his salt would be into the way of it in an hour.

Goldfinger:
Should driving schools take a step back and teach in an Eaton’? Just a thought…

I’d like to try out an Eaton twin splitter, just to see myself where we’ve come from to where technology is now, and if we’re any better off…?

Currently with typically a 4 over 4 4x2 with an empty trailer it’s too far removed from what you’ll actually get the keys to on the first day of work. Going back in time even further isn’t going to help unless you want a job on the fair.

What are you talking about, get the revs right and bang the stick? When you can drive the motor properly you don’t need to “bang the stick” it drops in sweetly, you don’t even need to use the clutch if you are a proper driver. If you don’t know how to use ANY gearbox do what I did at the time ASK. Anyone worth the title driver will tell/show you how its done without any snide comments.

I thought that was the point of a Eaton twin splitter!!!

The “point” of the twin splitter is to get you moving very efficiently.

The actual point of the twin splitter was to make a constant mesh transmission that needed minimal stick movements, Eaton had realised that drivers were a dying breed and were being replaced by licence holders, so they made the twin splitter, which, when it was in the top slot could drop down to speeds as low as 30mph by using the splitter alone, therefore no crunching from mis-timed stick movements :open_mouth:

BTW the twin splitter, like a knife through butter

Just like a ‘proper’ roadranger and the drivers must have won out over the licence holders because the twin split is obsolete whereas the road ranger isn’t yet  .

I know, I use an 18spd Roadranger every time I go to work :sunglasses:

I’m going to refer a couple of “drivers” with us to this thread; To them, they think the Eaton range/splitter 12speed 'box is a twin split. When I tell them otherwise (and when Workshop Manager tells them we only had 2 on B and C regs) they act like we’re talking a foreign language…

Not sure to which gearbox you are referring to Eaton twin splitter Muckaway. Was that the one were you didn’t need to push the clutch down to change the splitter but clutch down to change gearlever position? At Frank Tuckers years ago I drove many different ERF,s with different gearbox’s. Remember getting a 6 month old ex-rental fleet truck with B series sleeper cab with normal Eaton box with splitter 6 forward only not 8 like the range change with semi automatic clutch splitters. Reason being no-one could drive the thing, at National Carriers were it use to do night trunks. As a young driver others got p… off that I got a new truck before them, although it was only a 200 ■■■■■■■ turbo pulling 38 ton so u/s uphill.

An Eaton Twin Splitter had four main gears and they could each be split three times, low, intermediate and high, making twelve speeds in all.

Normal progression on the level would be 1st intermediate, 2 low, 2 high, 3 intermediate, 3 high and all 3 in the 4th gear position.

The 12 speed splitter you had an a B series would have been a ZF box, not Eaton Fuller.

A ■■■■■■■ turbo with 200hp? The only turbo ■■■■■■■ I’m aware of with 200hp is the B series, that was a four/six wheeler engine usually, it would not make the minimum power to weight ratio to be plated at 38ton, Could you mean the L10 at 250hp? That did feel like it only had 200hp, especially at 38ton

Thought I’d post this again.

A 330 in something like this sounds about right to me.A 7  or 9 speed fuller would probably be enough in that case.

Description says its a 7 speed fuller.

Those little Freightliners usually have an auto box, proper torque converter fluid drive auto, not automated manual

Except for that one. They probably don’t usually have the 330 motor either. :open_mouth:

So the 7 speed fuller in the description is an auto version  .

Sounds like they’re trying to make out that they can drive a proper one when they’re cheating by fitting it with an auto. :smiling_imp:

If only I could have posted a 4 wheeler TM 4400 with the 8V92 and a 13 speed in it on youtube over 30 years ago. :smiling_imp:
