Hi Jim, as regards the mention on your last post of J. Hadfield, do you know if they had a depot in Ashton-under- Lyne near Oldham in the sixties/ seventies ?. I can remember seeing their yellow vans ( I think they were Commers and Bedfords ) parked up at the Crawford John cafe on the A74 just before lunchtime on a Monday.
I worked with one of their ex drivers who lived in Oldham and he happened to be Scottish .
Regards Steve.
P.S. Jim, what are you doing up so late ?. Don’t tell me that you are still watching Andy Stewart live from The Kelvin Hall welcoming in The Hogmany .
.
Another photo of London Scottish and a bit more info.
hi everyone, jim your on about the A69,i have had a few hairy moment on that road when moving wide loads 2 places spring to mind the narrows at bramton and corbridge, the marks are still on the house’s gable end where they were wopped by wide loads going west on the A69, the bridge at haydon bridge was another one you had to watch the lamp post when turning right on the bridge,
used to be able to post photos on here no problem, still trying to workout what has gone wrong,

My Grandfather owned the land of The Carfin Depot, My Father also drove for them.

Back to the Atkinsons for a moment. There used to be a regular Advert/Feature from Atki in the Headlight magazine on the lines of the thread elsewhere on here “Where am I” where you would see a famous landmark and a “view” from the cab of a Mk1 or possibly the new Silver Knight that 240 Gardner correctly pointed out to me wasn’t a Mk2. I wouldn’t mind seeing an example of one of those adverts again after all this time or for that matter of the line drawing of the 4 wheeler man with his thumb stuck out the window in a happy to see you mate pose. Oh go on. Remind us all again how quickly those 40 years have come and gone.![]()

Just for you Jim a few from some of the Headlight magazines I thought to save from when I used to buy it in the late sixties early seventies
.
Hi Jim, London Scottish depot was on the right hand side going from Carfin to New Stevenston, as was Goodyear.
I do not have any information about McInnes, but a lot of companies used to have London Scottish as part of their livery.
Their Depot in Alloa was used by Road Services Forth for many years.
I think that building with the red roof is an Aldi Store, hope this helps some.
Dave.

Flatman hello. First things first, wasn’t ignoring you I was off and left the 'puter on suggesting “Online”Well who would believe it not one but five examples and four of the drivers get a mention, great stuff. Is there no end to your resources (Said he hopefully) and just look at the firms who the winners worked for
Hello Jim, unfortunately, I never got my brain into gear till the late eighties and started saving articles and photos that interested me out of magazines, I regret now not keeping more Headlight magazines and Commercial Motor, which I started reading when I first started work in 1964. I first got seriously interested in lorries when Wimpeys were building the Pinxton stretch of the M1, and I used to stand hours watching the endless stream of 6 and 8 wheel AEC Mammoth Major MkVs running stone from I think it was Dene Quarry at Cromford to the M1 site, I was also lucky that there was a BRS depot at Riddings just at the back of where I lived, and Alfreton Transport, who’s name disappeared a while ago after being taken over by K & M of Hucknall near where I lived, my one regret is it never entered my head to take any photos
John
A few more that might interest you Jim, the first four were from an old calender I saved
John
Hi flatman John,
The pic of the Albion Atkinson and Foden of McCall & Greenshields is great, keep them coming mate.
Cheers Dave.
Reference to Alfreton Transport and K & M Flatman made me wonder if you knew of my Brother Keith, he had his own ERF E6 four wheeler and run out of K & M’s yard, mainly delivering Aluminium Extrusions. He lives in Underwood, which must be close to your abode, his wife comes from the area and he’s lived there since ending his army service around 1979. He really enjoyed his owner driver days although he prefered the driving to the paperwork side of things (who doesn’t). Before buying the ERF he drove for Gateway in Hucknall until their demise and before that for the NCB. No doubt he knows many of the names you know in the area and although he is now finished with driving hgv’s (he’s a Paramedic thesedays) he always talks fondly of his time behind the wheel. I also went once or twice to K & M’s with him when his motor was in for service or loading as I often overnighted at his place when tramping. I’ll have to let him know and see what stories he might come up with. That’s his ERF below outside his house. Cheers Franky.

Hello Franky, I Did know your brother, and have posted a photo below I took of his lorry in J M Transports yard at Cotes Park, I think he did a bit of work for us, IIRC he once asked me to drive the lorry while he was on holiday but for some reason I couldn’t. My name is John Gibbs and Keith may remember me as I also worked for NCB/British Coal until privatisation of the transport in 1988, although it is around 15 years since I last saw him. Underwood is not very far from where I live at Alfreton, I once did a spell at Midland General at Underwood Garage in the mid 70s when I lived just down the road at Brinsley.
Ahh thanks for that John, the photo of the ERF is great and I don’t think Keith has that one so he’ll be chuffed when I send it onto him. Handy for me too as he asked me ages ago to make a model of it, he also once asked if I could do a couple of weeks on his motor too when his hols came up I said “Keith owner drivers don’t have holidays” he wasn’t impressed. I’ll pass your regards on and not take any more time up on this thread, thanks lads for being patient but this Jottings and the Scrapbook threads are just what forums are about, keep it up. Cheers Franky.

Hello Franky found another pic of Keith’s lorry before it had body on and was painted up, cant remember now if J M Transport did the job but the photo was taken in there yard, memory not too good these days.

Cheers again John that last pic was interesting I’ll forward it on, and Jim I’ll ask little Bro the history of his ERF and your so right about how many other stories there are that can be linked by a simple photo. I have a few interests on the go as well as trucks and modelling and one of them is Family History and it did occur to me that the Transport Industry could have a similar structure to the family trees by replacing names with companies and how one may have spawned many others over time causing links or branches to other firms and customers not to mention the legion of drivers that went from one job to another. It would be a hell of a task to gather this info and put it in order but it would make for a good read. I know from when I was driving that I loaded some of the same stuff from the same place and when working for different companies that my father had done also, years before and very little had changed. I’m sure other longer serving drivers have a similar experience, what a fantastic family to belong to. Franky.
