That is how we think of ourselves when we reach that age. I would think having a shunter in the depot makes life a bit easier for the distance drivers or whatever they call them in Lord Stobarts empire. But the TV programme must be wrong because on there they have dedicated truck washers and diesel pump attendants. You must be working for the poor relations
Stop worrying the way the shunter, washer, cab inspector is going he will be the chairman of the company soon and you can have his job shunting, washing & cab inspecting for the same money as him not 3K less the same money. thought crossed my mind are you a good driver ON the road could you run someone over and are you insured
Rikki-UK:
My first ever job in haulage was a yard boy… back then its was the way into haulage, and at 16 with not a clue how to drive I used to wash trucks, steam clean, strip tilts , grease wagons and trailers load up trailers. all involved me driving them around the yard, and I learnt and didnt kill anyone.
That was the way we learnt not to be a steering wheel attendant but to be a driver,
Given the choice between someone who has shunted trailers on and off tight docks, learnt to reverse in a real environment rather than a government designed excercise, who has done it day in and day out… Who do I feel is more experienced? Mr A who has just pased his test in a short draw bar outfit having never touched an artic, or matey boy Mr B who has shunted them trucks and trailers in the real world?
You choose who you feel more confident in… there is something to be said for the old fashioned way of getting into this business, and to my mind the way this young fella is going at it is much preferable
hes 50,if he wanted to drive trucks he would of learned years ago,hes doing it to get himself a couple of k more than he gets now,hec said hed offered to do the job for 3 k less than the bloke who did it,thats why theyve put shunter back on road and he may get job,not because they hope hell become a good driver,or because he wants to become one,its purely money.
Ady… isn’t that why you go to work? That’s certainly why I go to work.
As I said to 1 company as I was leaving due to them making me miss a concert (which was pre-booked, time off booked etc, yet the planners screwed up) “The ONLY reason I come here everyday is to pay for things like that concert and other stuff that I like to do OUTSIDE work”
Haha, love that, what a great way to look at it, hope I can afford to do that one day, good on you
Ady, since the insurance thing appears to be pretty much sewn up, what have you actually seen this guy do that makes you so convinced that he’s a danger to you and everyone else? Is his driving that bad?
You’re not trying to be the son of Carryfast are you?

Ouch, no need for that! Haha don’t you think he’s suffered enough abuse already
I need a permanent job so maybe i’ll go down there & offer to shunt, clean, cab inspect & diesel the trucks up & i will do it for a grand less then the guy whos doing it now, I love cutting the job up to suit myself Good on the guy, he didnt put anyone out of a job did he, you said the other guy is back out on the road so no harm done.
Ady your coming across like a complete $%@# mate, are you for real■■?. Driving in a yard at slow speed is completely different to driving on the road. If you cant manage to walk across a yard without getting hit by an hgv moving at slow speeds then i dread to think what your like when your out driving on the main roads. How on earth do you manage to drive a truck without hitting all the moving targets around you known as other traffic. I hope you never drive anywhere near me as i value my life

I agree, despite everything I don’t think Carryfast deserved that.
ady1:
theres also a memo on board saying theyve now tasked him with checking interiors of trucks when they come back in to make sure there left clean and tidy,no ■■■ ash, rubbish, coffee stains etc,so now hes going to be washing the trucks, shunting them, checking them for cleaness , all for £3 k less than the shunter[ex shunter got] ,after doing all that lot i cant see hell be in a fit state to drive, probally fall asleep at the wheelas for leaving him to get on with it,i think someone needs to have a word with him, talk about cutting the job up
Even if he has 100 things to do in his job he can only do one at a time, So why would he be more tired than anyone else
I’m suprised to read that from someone that has stated on here that to earn a decent wage he will work as close to the maximum legal working time as he can every week, surely doing this your more of a danger to yourself than the shunter will ever be

I once had some time off after a motocross accident, then when I returned to work my boss said “maybe you should consider the impact on your ability to work when doing activities away from work” I told him with that I came to work so I could do those things and that there was no way I wasnt going to do other activities so I could come to work

He’s being more [zb] ing sensible than you are, trust me.
Ok ok, in the interests of fairness I have devised a way to see if this thread warrants continuation.
All those who are worried that Ady might be run over…
Anybody? No? Ok, in that case I declare that the shunter with no licence may continue his employment unhindered by any wingnuts who think he should not be employed.
This bloke is 50, not quite senile, can obviously get in and out of the cab and can point it in the general direction of a loading bay. If the bloke is having lots of accidents caused by myopia, muppetry or madness, then the depot manager will soon pick up on it.
He may have taken early retirement from another job and is just using this to top up his pocket money, maybe his wife is successful in business and he has become bored with being a kept man.
Was this job advertised Ady, did you, or a bezzie want the job and you are suffering from sour grapes.
Everyone of us goes into companies and warehouse premises everyday and get unloaded by fork lift trucks. None of these drivers have a licence either, as there is no requirement to hold one, just like a yard shunter.
There are company training schemes where you gain a certificate. That certificate will say that on this day, they drove a forklift truck and moved a pallet without killing anyone!
You will be questioning whether the typist has passed an ECDL next as a mistake in an address could have you hitting a low bridge.

Sorry but how the [zb] did you learn to drive then? Must have been different from the rest of us

Oh I thought the stobart lads went to Brecon Beacons for a Intensive driver selection course to become the best of the best. Where they learn elite skills of thinking there better then any other haulage firm on the road, Sticking there nose in other drivers business and becoming experts in driving instructors and expert H&S officers at the same time. They also do a whole range of courses and become experts in things us normal truckers can only dream of
or am I am thinking of somebody else
After having a think about this thread today, after the initial laugh I have to ask ady1 a question.
Have you ever been to an airport and been taken from the ramp to airside on a passenger bus? And would you think twice about doing so now you have such a strong view on a shunter(which is what this guy at the airport does except he shunts people) requiring the correct license to shunt his load?
I worked as a baggage handler at Nottingham east mids and us ‘ramp agents’ were responsible for loading/unloading bags, people, animals, and we also had to get the passengers to their plane if they were in the air side part of the ramp which even we couldn’t walk across. The guy driving the bus didn’t require any more then a lesson with a trainer(company policy not law) as it’s private land, no pcv to carry people but he gets the job done. He is of course doing a ‘proper coach driver’ out of a job as they aren’t qualified and in your own words ‘not safe’ because they aren’t trained to the same standard as a ‘proper coach driver’
Will you refuse to be taken to your plane for the same reason you think this guy shouldn’t be doing his job as it’s the same principal?

There are less and less options for Ady with every post. He can’t go to the yard, unlicensed, insured driver shunting. He can’t go out on the road, unlicensed, uninsured drivers everywhere. He can’t go on holiday, unlicensed, insured driver at the airport. What is the poor lad going to do?
