Is there ANYTHING good about being a truck driver?

Positives are I’m on time and a half today AND sat in Pentalvers in Southampton waiting for my box to be unburied (29 deep) :sunglasses:

Just thought of something else, ‘bladder control’.
I woz bostin for a ■■■■ 3 hours ago but held it in till I got back to the yard. Then whipped her out up the wheel (bloody hell i even refer to me tallywacker as a woman) and did a record breaking widdle me pappy would have been proud of. The toilets only 50 feet away but theres just something animal about going outdoors I really enjoy.

No other job I can think of allows one to stretch their bladder to the limits and beyond.

Dont get me started on learning weird and wonderfull places to take a poop.

yawn, if you look at some HGV jobs I bet they earn a decent wage too. maybe not 400k a year but a good wage. as the guy said she is a doctor not a trainee, working long hours for not great ££ same as teachers.

No, HGV driver’s don’t earn a decent wage. Unless, you consider £10 p/h to be decent,

What would you class as a decent wage?

£20 p/h upwards Monday-Friday (daytime)

I moved into the haulage industry as the warehouse is was working in was closing down but they needed more artic drivers I took my test and I had a ready made job with a company I knew and trusted, I stuck with them on shift work for six well paid years but I wanted more time at home due to my wife’s ill health.
I then moved into the waste industry working days and driving pretty much anything but as I showed a willingness to work I was was promoted first to foreman then into the traffic office where I have now gone onto become a contract manager. Do I miss driving? Some days when the suns out and the lovely ladies are too! but I have some great memories of my time on the road and some not so but I am keeping up my dcpc as I can see myself doing some driving in the future and like most jobs it’s what you make of it there are some great guys and girls out there that drive for a living that will always help each other especially when you have just passed your test, just remember never be afraid to ask and you will never stop learning.

Just as a matter of interest this pic is from Dec 2013 pulling a morrisons trailer. I went to see if any of the Blackpool lights where still on and a few still were. :grimacing:

Yes, you get paid to sit down and listen to music all day, whilst enjoying changing scenery. If you don’t have other qualifications, this sure beats being paid £6/hr to sweat and work non stop in a fast food restaurant or £7-9/hr to sweat and work non stop in a warehouse.

Downside is you can have little control of your finish times and due to the nature of the job you can’t just up and leave at a moment’s notice in the day if something crops up.

Depends on the job you do

Absolute, complete and utter deluded fantasy.

800 a week basic (£41.6K) a year for 40 hrs Mon-Fri driving a truck? :unamused: People believe the job is worth this? ■■■■ me.

I must be a deluded fantasist then :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

The largest regional airline in UK pay £16/hour based on average 37.5 hours a week. Monarch airlines pay equivalent £23/ hour if you base on 40 hours a week average. That’s flat and never goes up. You get other stuff extra but it’s not pensionable and doesn’t get paid when on holiday. Also includes early 4am starts and night working within a week :open_mouth: . Vets are on similar I believe.

If you can get that from a haulier good on you. I can believe there are some LGV jobs paying that basic. Some industries are on a faster race to the bottom  .

Thats not too bad to start on, not that great if you’re starting with £100k worth of debt but there’s way more potential for career progression in that industry unlike driving trucks in the UK. Unfortunately it’s much harder to get a job with those 2 outfits in the first place (unless you went to CTC or you’re well connected) unlike a job as a driver.

I had a 7 year break from driving and did something totally different. Substance misuse counselling and homelessness support work. As enjoyable as it was, it was tiring and stressful. Started driving again last year and realised how much I’d missed it. Now run my own Limited Company, decent contracts, money is pretty good and I can take time off as often as I want, when I want. London driving can be a bit of a chore… stress levels can escalate if you let them, usually caused by the amount of arrogant, inconsiderate bell ends on the road… especially the suicyclists which, as many of you will know, are in abundance in the capital. Apart from that, it’s a doddle… but don’t expect to be held in high regard at delivery points… or anywhere, for that matter. Just don’t let them grind your gears.

Mac …That was my point !! I dont have to go off route to see what I have seen , it’s part of the job I have , my truck driving job
Put it this way , I’m typing this from Milan , where I have been , on full pay since last Sunday . I leave Mon /Tue next week . My time here is my own . If I wasn’t a truck driver I would never have this oppourtunity . Therefore , again , YES there are good things about being a truck driver .

I have a similar job, it’s taken to me some great places all round the World (not always driving trucks though, but I wouldn’t have the job if I couldn’t drive one) and I’ve met some really great people and made great friends and I get treated with respect for what I do. Like all job it has bad times and does my head in from time to time, but a few weeks on agency work soon gives me a reality check.

2 weeks ago I was having 2 days off at a seaside resort in Portugal, hotels and expenses paid by the company, true no family, but I’m single so not really relevant, but I have known drivers have their partners either fly out or come along in the truck with them when they know they’ll have a couple of days off in nice place.

mac12:
But only for you, most drivers won’t be doing that work.

Ok it’s not run of the mill work, but the goods jobs are out there for those that seek them, and the good jobs don’t have to be the Event and Motorsport work, in fact I’m sure for many it wouldn’t be for them, and I fully understand and respect why they wouldn’t want the job.
But the good job could be the local work for a good own account fleet, company next to where I live makes office furniture it has a fleet of tidy rigids on own account work. I’ve never seen a job advertised there, probably one of those jobs that once you get it you’ don’t leave unless you [zb] it up.
I knew another company who had truck on own account work and when ask why they went to the expense of running them instead of letting an outside haulier do it they said it wasn’t run for profit but as a service to their customers.

If you don’t like you job, you can either get out and look for a the good jobs or spend your life stuck in a rut moaning about how bad it is, either way eventually you’ll probably end up with the job you deserve.

Georaphic adventure! You get to sit while you work! Never been short of work in 15 year unlike other trades ive been into, even after the great invasion in 2004 there was still plenty work but the rates dropped. Go for it, it will keep the bills paid… just.

I’d say relatively wise compared to ten years ago the terms and conditions in aviation have dropped faster comared to what they were than the relative drop in HGV compared to what they were. Stobart Air starting FO is €30,000. Yup, Stobarts!

You don’t start on that with Monarch, it’s gone from a decent pay scale to a flat pay over night. No increments or scales.

Just tell them your name is Mark Dixon and if you cut your arm off it’s green and that you’re willing to work for monkey nuts.

I don’t get all this obsession with wages. As long as you have enough to pay your bills, and have a standard of life that you are comfortable, what’s the issue?

Plenty on here moan about how crap the job is, and how poor the pay is, yet there doesn’t seem that many who jack it in.

See you all stuck in the traffic on the M6 tomorrow.
