Is there ANYTHING good about being a truck driver?

Freight Dog:
You don’t start on that with Monarch, it’s gone from a decent pay scale to a flat pay over night. No increments or scales.

I didn’t know about the pay, I did read a Balpa article about their pensions being cut etc affecting skippers about to retire more than most. Aren’t they also looking to change their model to low cost in the near future?

Freight Dog:
Just tell them your name is Mark Dixon and if you cut your arm off it’s green and that you’re willing to work for monkey nuts.

Im no Mark Dixon but I think I’m a grafter. I can’t even get a job driving for Stobart let alone anything else[emoji1][emoji85]

Christ Pimp! Even I can get a job with the green crew!!

Long look at oneself required lol.

Lucky escape. Sounds like you’ll earn more driving for them than flying for them anyway.

Maybe so but there’s more opportunities for progression as an FO than a driver…

Lucky you beaver, I tried Stobart fuel Goresbrook and automotive (before it was sold), they weren’t interested lol

The largest regional airline in UK pay £16/hour based on average 37.5 hours a week. Monarch airlines pay equivalent £23/ hour if you base on 40 hours a week average.

Thats not too bad to start on, not that great if you’re starting with £100k worth of debt but there’s way more potential for career progression in that industry unlike driving trucks in the UK. Unfortunately it’s much harder to get a job with those 2 outfits in the first place (unless you went to CTC or you’re well connected) unlike a job as a driver.

Not many make a lot out of flying planes. It’s a job you do 'cos you love it, not cos it pays, cos unless you’re on for BA as a long haul captain, you’re not on the money folk think.

And training compared to truck driving is mega money. I ran out after PPL/IMC/Night rating and half the ATPL groundschool… And I’d spent about 15k by then… And still nowhere near a frozen ATPL… And that was 14 years ago…

All the people I know make a tidy living out of it. The world is much bigger than BA, I’ve met a skipper at EK who’s ex BA, go figure[emoji15]

It is but most who do it come from well off backgrounds so it’s no big deal, it’s just money. I think if you’d have seen the training through you could be captain by now, paid off all debts & earning a lot more than truck drivers do

If God forbid you died in a work industrial accident on year 1, you’d have died earning exactly that. Progression is a separate discussion. Supply and demand wins of course.

Just like most jobs then…

Exactly. The future is an unknown. That’s what you’re working for doing the job at that point and that’s what your effectively saying your role is worth.

But right now it’s a good view in the rhs at FL380[emoji1]
