JeffA:
Give over. Its cos you know you’d get £84. The exact same reason I dont do it

Gonna shoot you down with that one mate.
In another life I lost a business and a house.
Worst day if my life was one day sat in the dole office with a load of druggies, no marks, lazy ■■■■ s and general low life, but there was one girl in there I knew,.she was down on her luck between jobs, she was most surprised to see me there, and saw how ■■■■■■ off and low I was,.
I’ll never forget her for what she said…,‘‘Don’t worry about it Rob,.at least you had a go when others wouldn’t’’ .and that made me feel better about myself…so much so I gave her a lift home.

I was on the dole for about 4 or 5 weeks, I got everything paid for as I had 4 young kids to support,.so it was the whole thing,.rent paid,.allowances and benefits for this that and the other, and free this free that… I got the equivalent to a working wage,.and guess what…
As Maoster says…Pride got me back to work, it just wasn’t for me.

I don’t know what’s more unreal, the fact you think it’s only “a few blokes” playing the system or that you think they are only on £84 a week. :unamused:

I dont “think” it - look up jobseekers allowance. How much do you think they get?

Let me just explain this again as it doesn’t seem to be sinking in. You pay MORE tax than the germans and the french. When they lose their jobs they get TWO-THIRDS OF THEIR SALARY FOR DOLE FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS. When you lose your job you get £84 a week. And you even think that’s too much for you. You want to work a 40 hour week for your £84.

“Please sir, I’m not tired can I do another shift for my £84?”

Oh and of course - you’ll be working till you’re 70 while the French retire at 62. Don’t tell me - you think that’s fair enough too.

No, let ME explain again. I am not talking about the single guy who has found himself out of work and has had to sign on for dole money - your right that may only be £84 or whatever it is.

I am talking about the whole generation of career benefit scroungers we have now - Mum, who pops out kids left, right and centre, Dad(s) who has never worked a day in his/their lives and has no intention of doing so. As I mentioned I used to see it on a daily basis with my own eyes for several years and believe me, they are being given significantly more than £84 a week with all the top ups and extra benefits they claim. You are very naïve if you think these people are not.

Plus I have no idea, why you keep going off on tangents about politicians dodging tax or retirement ages in France as that is nothing to do with the point I am making here.

I can only tell you what I got when I claimed - £73 a week.

Im just saying why go after the bloke on £84 a week while the rich bloke robs more in unpaid tax?

Okay, so you only got £73 a week. That’s not the point I’ve been making and you keep going back to it. There are a whole generation out there getting significantly more £73 a week and probably more than a lot of full time jobs earn, getting everything paid for, never having any intention of working and contributing and why would they when we fund their lifestyles. THESE ARE THE PEOPLE I AM ON ABOUT, not a working guy or woman who has found themselves out of work for whatever reason or due to illness and has to claim dole money.

I don’t like the fact the rich avoid tax either so that’s a mute point, but are you happy and have no problem with these people who treat benefits as a “career” because they can earn more than going to work?

As Maoster says…Pride got me back to work, it just wasn’t for me.

Good luck with that.Be careful what you wish for.You know 1930’s style over supplied labour market where your job is auctioned every morning to the lowest bidder.Pride won’t pay your bills or help you when you’ve been worked to physical destruction when you’ll be thrown on the scrap heap for another hopeful to take your place. It’s easy to get complacent sitting there driving a truck for £500 a week.
Suggest you check out the onerous work search commitment terms which are enforced on an arbitrary basis to the point where the 20 something gets away with joyriding on his bicycle all day while the knackered 65 year old is forced out to work doing whatever to keep his pittance.

But doesnt this process go on today.?
If you need a plumber, dont you get the cheapest one that will do the job? Or if you want a flight, you use the low cost airline that probably pays its staff the lowest rate and so on…
I think the problem with capitalism,it provides competition but there is nothing in it to guarantee that you will earn enough to meet your needs.
Did you ever hear that Ronald Reagan joke?
A man in Moscow wanted to buy a car and the car salesman told him its a 10 year waiting list and you have to put up the full 10 thousand rubles up front which the customer did and he then asked the salesman if the car would be delivered on a Monday or Tuesday. The salesman laughed and said why do you ask.Its 10 years away. The customer then said,I know but I have the plumber coming on the Monday, lol

Life coaching now eh?
I think me and you have been here before mate, a few years ago, when you told me where I went wrong when I went bust,.and what I SHOULD have done,.and not done in bringing up my family during and after this time. …Then you revealed you were still living at home with your mother. :open_mouth: so I wasn’t sure how, or why, you thought you were qualified to advise or pontificate in that area… :unamused: .
Still don’t tbh.

Since my short lived dole experience (whilst getting my act back together) I’ve managed to bring up a family of 4, together with my wife, despite just like everyone else, experiencing some pretty low and crap times in our lives…,.but whilst managing to maintain a long marriage together.

During this time I’ve been providing for my family in a much varied carreer in transport, spending a lot of time away from home, my 4 kids have all grown up,.and have done very well for themselves of which I am proud, (either by a consequence of all that went on ,or despite it, I ain’t decided)

So both now and in the future, when I come to cross roads in life, I’ll continue to make further life decisions by drawing on my vast experience in both scenarios.

But if I ever need any advice or life coaching,.I will seek it from somebody with similar life experiences to myself thanks, who has been there, done that,.and knows what he’s on about.
Cheers anyway.

I dunno about these mysterious people on a grand a week dole money - that must be a different country. All I can say is in this country if I was out of work tomorrow I would get £84 a week. Sure as day follows night. Ive done it - I got nowhere near enough to live on.

Ttust me - Im not proud - if you got enough money to live on I would have had time off to look after dying family members 3 or 4 times. I didnt because I knew I would be skint on £73 a week.

Are all the people going to foodbanks just eccentric millionaires then?

The irony when like me you’re basically making the case for abolition of the worse than useless rip off anything but 'Social Security system or over generous burden on tax payers depending on point of view.
You seem to have missed the fact that I was living with parents, like many others in this part of the country, because wage rates no longer reflected living costs after it’s industry was decimated and instead ploughed the pointless rental costs of a crap flat into helping them pay off the mortgage faster instead.
As you know my views on council house tenants were formed by them calling those like my parents militants for trying to maintain wage levels to pay their mortgage. So that those council tenants could get a cheap subsidised nicked council house from their benefactor Thatcher.
Basically you’re saying that Socialism is good when it suits you not when it doesn’t.
As I said I agree with JeffA but for different reasons and yes let’s knock the whole scam on the head but give us back the money we’ve paid in for the scam and worthless cover.

TBH I’m a fair hand at plumbing (for my own purposes), so no. But stuff I’m not allowed to do for myself such as gas fitting? Again no, I wouldn’t pick the cheapest, I’d assume there’s a reason he was cheaper than the rest and that would be either inexperience, or, just being not-that-good. Horses for courses, but I don’t automatically go for the cheapest option for any purchase, whether goods or services. Caveat emptor!

Upset about immigrants being paid less than native Brits? Some good news then.
Foreign teachers may be offered a £10k bonus to come here.

Thats good then as most the kids are foriegn too now…

helped a mate paint a primary school one weekend a while back in Humberside, and gobsmacked everything had three to four language lables on it, from bookshelf to chairs, confusing as hell I thought, but at least language should be easier when they get older eh, maybe why maths and English is an issue at moment, as they cant work out which is english from all the other languages plastered everywhere…

Think teachers need at least 3 languages now if their to teach all the kids equally…

maybe thats why they need foriegn teachers more than English ones ?.

Your a wind up merchant Franglais… lol…

I think all the numpties who want to work 40 hours for £84 are the reason sick pay is so pathetic. The boss knows those morons will say " £45 a week sick pay? Its too much Sir! "

No many of the self entitled 20 somethings who want to subsidise their no work bicycle joyriding lifestyle by making the 65 year olds work until they drop.Until they reach 65 themselves when suddenly they’ll want the pension age reduced back to 65.Having first drained the NHS in hip and knee joint replacements and cardio vascular surgery before that age. Added to the health care costs of immigrants legal and illegal who have paid nothing into the system.

As opposed to those who have paid into the system for decade after decade then?

Can’t help thinking this is a bit of an insult to why this station is famous, even though that could be described as irrational.
At the very least it could be put to better use imo…something that is actually going to do us/the country, some good,.rather than something which in my opinion is derogatory and a drain on finances…
Before the usual crew and culprits pipe up, :unamused: I.couldn’t give a two penny toss at the moment (in the context of this thread) how much the Tories waste on other things, and how much certain Tory members are getting legal aid.etc etc etc )

While a bit tedious and onerous at times I’ve never had any issues with DWP (benefits) system. Possibly has something to do with not feeling superior to everyone though and applying for jobs and eventually taking one that by most peoples standards would be below them/me.

I’ve got issues with it being the lowest level in Europe. If Germany and France can pay 2/3rds your salary why not the UK? Why do we have to make do on £84?
