I’m not a Christian so don’t celebrate it, it’s just another day as far as I’m concerned. There are other days of the year which mean more to me and I don’t work them.
I think we should just get all of the crap out of the way and re-name Christmas Day “Chinese plastic toy manufacturers day”.

That made me laugh, Christmas stopped being about Christianity a long time ago IMO, I agree with you tho that other days can be just as important, but I have always believed christmas is about family and for that reason in my 23 years of work I have never worked Xmas day and never will
Happy Holidays.
For all of you who want to spend a months money on a days food, look sharp, only a few days left and the roads are closed for health and safety reasons.
When I was on the milk tankers I worked Christmas eve, Christmas day, Boxing day, New years eve and New years day. Only had two days of in between.

Not for Christians it hasn’t! I know what you’re saying though, the vast amount of people in this country don’t celebrate it’s true meaning, myself included. I don’t believe in God but my parents do so I go to church on Christmas day to keep them happy. It’s a pleasent outing for the day even if you don’t believe in it. I wouldn’t work at Christmas either, well maybe for 5 grand but not for all this double time and a day in hand foolishness.
I worked about 6 or 7 Christmases & new years whilst on the 'fridges. Always loaded Christmas eve,Murcia/Almeria & running up for boxing day or 27th boat.
Spent one memorable Christmas eve in the Chinese near Fred’s in Coslada, excellent meal & session & another time ran from Barracas to Sunbilla Christmas morning, then stayed there 'til boxing morning as the 1st boat out of Cherbourg wasn’t 'til middayish on the 27th. Always remember coming over Velate that day in the snow (long before the tunnels were there) down into Sunbilla about 2hrs before they opened (15:00 Christmas day 'til 02:00 26th iirc) parked up,walked round the wagon, soft tyre on the trailer, Christmas day in the snow changing a wheel, unforgettable
Mind you I sat in there the rest of the day drinking mucho tinto & carajillos & had a cracking meal, ensalada, Chuleton, membrilla & queso verde a lot more vino & around midnightish (bedtime for me) I went to pay the bill to be told it was “all on the house”, the owner (whose name escapes me now,any offers?) basically said that as I was a regular, always ate & drank there, never caused any trouble when the rest of los Ingleses were kicking off & I was alone there for Christmas then it was all on him as a thank you & Feliz Navidad! Despite wheel changing another good Christmas away!
No more though, strictly UK monday to friday now with a life at home…
Hiya…i worked on the sugar beet job in newark 73/74/75 always worked christmas day, 3 loads to peterbourough(tipper)
and back empty another trailer loaded ready to go …one last trailer for colwick on the way home…easy…no traffic.
one year the boss asked if i wanted christmas day off…wow yes please…go christmas night…say no more.

In 1989 I worked Boxing day night doing a Crick - Exeter change over for Fed Ex who paid me a whole weeks pay for one 10 hour shift.

Hello Roy, it was Christmas Eve 1983 and by the time that we finished clearing customs at Kapic it was about 8 p.m. I will never forget Lee’s little cherub face smiling as we walked into that washroom. Do you remember that other British driver who shared my Christmas pud with us and we had to find him a doctor when his arm came out of it’s socket.

Some years ago after just being taken on full time with Sainsburys I had Christmas day off but had to start work at 2am on Boxing day and had to go to Grimsby to pick up a full load of fish. Between Haydock and Grimsby I only saw 3 cars on the road, a long lonely drive that was.

Once in Maroc Xmas in Tangiers, other time Xmas Eve in Freds ,Xmas dinner next door to Victors, Xmas night in France .
Before we were married, I worked Christmas day to let family men have it off, and herself worked in a soup kitchen, feeding the homeless.
Doesn’t that make us sound noble?
Family men wanted all the choice Summer holiday times off ,Xmas off etc. & the clubs were full of 'em in the old days.
When I was on coaches at the airport, I offered to work xmas day to cover the other lads who had kids, also my missus worked in care so she worked xmas day too, so there wasn’t much point being at home.
Did a few years taxiing on xmas day too, again, missus in work, so why not, great time, all families, no hassle and good take home.
I don’t mind too much because I’ve got no kids, so just me n the missus, and we both had jobs that were 365, so we let others spend the time with their families.
You can guess the gratitude we got by the fact that we both have changed out of those careers.

Hi all,
An owner driver mate delivers a lot of weights for a large crane co.i remember him telling me that they were struggling to get a crane driver to work on Xmas day,the only day in the year that essential maintenance could be done on the main London to Scotland railway line.they were paying £1,000 for the day!and that was five years ago
Regards Andrew. If they need it done this year, send me a pm mate.
Cheers
John.
Stick my name down for that too mate !!! I’m sure my family would be more than happy to spend xmas day without me if I walked in on boxing day with a grand in my sky rocket ! Bring it on , if I’m earning a realistic wage I have no problem working it .
Xmas is overrated tosh anyhow
Worked last year, and i’m working this year too. It’s great, the roads are absolutley dead. Driving round the M25 i’s quite erie in a way, you’re the only one on there bar the odd car. I was suprised to see that they had attendants at the dartford tolls though
About '96 I spent Xmas aboard a ship in Liverpool docks and it was the tradition the skipper cooked the crews dinner on that day so the turkey got chucked into the oven in good time, only problem was I hadn’t removed the little plastic bag with the giblets in where his innards should be. I never said owt and as far as I know no-one noticed, but the amount of alcohol flowing may have contributed.
Due to work onboard again this Xmas but last time I was on these ships the company went ■■■■ up a week before an we ■■■■■■■ at Erith and I went home, maybe happen again this year, who knows…
Yep, looking after the horses is every day, Christmas included. In an earlier life spent volunteered to work Christmas day taking old people to the Sally Army for lunch. Did that for 15 years. Too many mince pies and tea, but rewarding.
Cheers
Paul
Yep, I was a pub landlady for 18 years or so …worked every Xmas Day. It’s surprising how many people come out grumpy and looking for an argument
