I fully agree JD, but the oilfield is a 7 day week, 24 hour day, 365 day a year job. We never got paid extra for crimbo or new year. If your shift fell on it, then do it.
The chances of me working crimbo now, are similar to getting a lb of butter up a porcupines 'arris with a red hot needle.
I can’t remember what year it was but Mushroomman and me where on our way to baghdad.
On christmas day we got to Kapikule, just in time to rescue Lee Marland (now deceased) RIP, from being on his own.
A few times many moons ago, driving internally at a Hospital in West London, pretty good time as it happens, flirting with nurses/patients,a few scoops and a Xmas dinner, jobs a good un.
I worked christmas day in 1963 it was my first year as a bus conductor as you worked your first christmas after starting and in 66 I had to work as I had gone driving ( so it was classed as your first year again but I went lorry driving just after ) and it was also the wife’s 21st birthday but both times they were only about 6 hour shifts starting around 0700 so i was finished for around 1300 and home for dinner both times. The nearest I came to working on christmas day lorry driving was one year I came into I think it was Southampton on christmas eve and customs were a bit slow clearing me but I was home around midnight or just after but back in the yard just before midnight.
cheers Johnnie
after 37 years of farming its easier to count the Xmas days I didn’t work, could guarantee things would go pear-shaped - pipes freezing, machinery breaking down heifers needing calved or stock breaking out. This year will be the first time I’ve had both xmas and new year off
When i was at TDG about seven years ago i worked all over the xmas holidays,I only had the 27th and 28th of December off.Id rather work anyway i hate xmas.
Have worked many christmas days as did work in catering so was 1 of the busiest times
Driving wise yep not many but have done or been on call over the christmas period I dont mind as roads are clear & I dont really like christmas
This year will be on my own so poss wont put tree up will see
1996 6 till 2 driving a ladle carrier @ Llanwern steelworks.
I have been asked if i wish to load and go to Ankara on the 20th December.
My answer of no problem but I want an extra few quid was met with silence.
when i was on fridges i always worked xmas and new year
i had a car stolen just before one christmas
and should have gone to our yard in South Wales
took the day off to sort it out.
and as i had no plans on Xmas day i said i would run the load down
as we had security working on site
Ran straight down but came back thru the Forest of Dean
Hi all,
An owner driver mate delivers a lot of weights for a large crane co.i remember him telling me that they were struggling to get a crane driver to work on Xmas day,the only day in the year that essential maintenance could be done on the main London to Scotland railway line.they were paying £1,000 for the day!and that was five years ago
Regards Andrew.

I’m not a Christian so don’t celebrate it, it’s just another day as far as I’m concerned. There are other days of the year which mean more to me and I don’t work them.

That made me laugh, Christmas stopped being about Christianity a long time ago IMO, I agree with you tho that other days can be just as important, but I have always believed christmas is about family and for that reason in my 23 years of work I have never worked Xmas day and never will
Yep twice and technically I worked twice on the same day once, First time was Christmas 1999 I wanted New Years off and was working for JDR they parked all their dutch drivers on the 23rd and asked to do and Heathrow Paris back to back which was quite easy I finished Christmas day at Gatwick at 5.30 took the truck back to Heathrow and was back home by 10.30 am
The second time was the year after and I was on a work patten which meant both Christmas, boxing day and potentially new years eve and day could be spent at an airport anywhere in europe. However as I was on a dutch contract at the time I could easily earn £900 !! those weeks
I left left Heathrow on the 22nd and worked the following route Heathrow(LHR) - Manachester (MAN) - Amsterdam (AMS) -Brussels (BRU) and this it where it got a bit funny as I was due to run either a AMS shuttle or a CDG (paris) shuttle which involves a trip to the destinations and a quick tip and back but I suffered a massive airleak in BRU and the mobile daf dealer couldn’t fix it I went to the dealership ate about 4 meals in Mcdonalds opposite and waited and waited then phone call all sorted it was 18.30 by then and I was about to turn in for the night.
Within 5 minutes and obviously informed by the dealer the office rings - can I run a load to London ? without thinking im saying yes and phoning my wife and saying pick me up in the morning ! im home !! The road from Bru to ostend was really foggy and I was doing about 60k !! lucky I was one of only 4 trucks on the train that night and i pulled into BA at heathrow at 3.30 am by 5.30 I was in the car and on the way home. I slept till about 10 am and had a lovely crimbo meal then looked at my phone which says load 17.30 LHR - CDG I fired up the truck and bang no air or very little phone daf aid and the van in the fitter phones me up and wasn’t in the best mood
I said mate look don’t worry say you’ve come out I need a part and that I got to wait till morning, so he said good man - he stayed in and I phoned up my wife and said please come back dear and pick me up. 10 minutes later the office phones me up oh we have a spare truck can you run it to Stansted please and then come back empty and then you can go home for the night. Well I never dropped below 90k all the way got to fed ex to find it closed !! and came back to Heathrow !!
Xmas is about having a ■■■■■■ with family and friends, people who still think its a religous thing need to smell the coffee
Any chance for some time off and I am right at the front of the queue, I have plenty of cash in the bank so dont need to work on xmas day.
