Have you ever worked on Christmas Day?

Never have and never will

I was out of work for long period, a friend suggested a company in Gloucester, I trundled across to Cheltenham about 10 days before xmas, did two “quick” loads to Scotland & back, then given Brown envelope with trip details & running money etc and proceeded to head to Poole, ran south met 2 more from same Company, and we all spent xmas in madrid tipping computers.

after that it was kinda normal to work xmas and i ended up doing 6 more.

2000 started working for BOC M&S Gist, and was asked would i work xmas, “whats the job & whats on offer”, about £200 a day in lieu, on call till dinner time xmas, turns out, one of the turkey suppliers turkeys were not up to scratch & they wanted cover for any returns.

Xmas is just like any other day, cant wait for it to be over so I can have some time off

Used to be on the post many years ago and was asked to do security on Christmas morning, midnight till 8 am. Triple money and a day in lieu! Result I thought! I can still go out on Christmas eve get pi$$ed and go in the security hut and sleep it off All you had to do was lock the gates and job done!

I went out on Christmas eve, got bladdered and fell into a cab. I got to work at 1.30 am, and woke the girl up who was dead to the world. She went home not bothered, result! and I curled up on the floor with a load of post bags as a pillow and covers! At 7.30 was woken up by the relief girl, no hangover and feeling fresh faced. Got home (living with mum then) as if was a normal Christmas day and had earned 24 hours money! Best work ever!

Triple money, a day in lieu and a girl to provide relief? Sounds like all your Christmases came at once. :stuck_out_tongue:

When I was in the Army I think I only had 2 Xmas days with my family at home, all the others I was either on tour in Ireland or Belize or on Guard duty in Germany, so 8 out of 10 years.

In Civvy street I have only worked one Xmas so far, but will be working unto 1am Christmas day this year and also a full night shift New years eve.

i have never worked christmas day/

Never have but if I did, I’d rather get up early on the 25th and get out and back and maybe get home for the late afternoon/evening rather than going out about 9 and taking all day.

I worked the last two Chritmas’s, last year was because the wife was flying back from England and Heathrow shut down because of the snow, her flight was cancelled and the next available was to Calgary on Xmas day, so work got me a load so I could pick her up. Then she phoned me from Heathrow Xmas morning and said she could get on the Winnipeg flight, at the time I was 800 miles away in Calgary…[zb]stard

The year before, I was coming back to the UK for a while in January, so I worked, got a free Turkey dinner in a truckstop, surprised to see a lot of places open and the roads were a lot busier than I expected, just another day really, although it seemed weird writing 25th December on my log book

I work every christmas, every year, its my busiest time… ho ho ho

yep worked the past 5 christmas days as money was so good…wife worked then as well(she was a home carer old people dont go away at xmas either) but as a first not going to work this year as rate has been halved(£14 ph and theres no way I am getting out of bed for less than £30 a hour on xmas day(this was what i was on last year)no way am i going out and changing any tyres for that amount and I also got a 18 month old now so am spending time at home for once…

Many years ago had to go to work Christmas night for the Boxing day papers, good money but it was part of the shift pattern anyway and if it fell to you on the rota tough, if you worked Christmas you’d also be doing New Year.

Had to deliver to Heathrow on a Christmas morning some years ago, they couldn’t get anyone to do it so bribed us with a £350 one off bonus each on top of double bubble, for about 5 hours work so still home for 11am, probably a dozen of us did that.

When you’ve got bills to pay and you are the sole breadwinner you will go out there and do what you have to.

Only got x-mas day of this year then back in boxing day. Theres two guys working x-mas day at our place, once doing the security and the other doing the shunting, 6.00am till 3pm, and ive heard they got the right price for working x-mas day

You won’t miss nothing on NYE, the most over-rated night of the year. I’ve worked it before and would again.

i have worked a few whilst in transport, one of them in Iran , eating kippers, with a glass of scotch ffs, utter madness. In the food industry the fridges have to keep moving so its inevitable someone has to do it. Where i work now, christmas day is a non working day, but with supermarkets looking for more profits, i can see that changing.
When the kids were younger, it was always a problem if i had to work, as it means so much to them, but as you get older, its not so important, just to be alive is a bonus
However, i am working boxing day ( volunteered ) with no extra cash, but we do get a very large box of fruit of every make, name and size, but one thing i wouldnt want to miss now is the new year, and i am not working that.
My thought go out to anyone who has to work, fireman, ambulance, snow plough drivers, power station workers etc, etc, and anyone who works to make our one a lot better and easier. merry xmas ( by the way, i still believe )

I’m not a Christian so don’t celebrate it, it’s just another day as far as I’m concerned. There are other days of the year which mean more to me and I don’t work them.

I think we should just get all of the crap out of the way and re-name Christmas Day “Chinese plastic toy manufacturers day”.

and sadly so true but its for children no longer for me i will still be sweating but i will put on the polar express dvd and i will give him his sack full of chinese crap plus a pack of UK jelly babies

Thats my 6 year old boy ok
