Maybe ex Knights of Old Harry.
Yes, that’s what Beetie reckoned, Knights of Old. Same questions then really, presume they’ve been looked after? To be honest, I would consider a truck from either Owen’s or Knights to be a fairly safe bet. The ones that Hanbury have, at £15k more, are ex- Wincanton and I would say they were all much of a muchness in terms of what kind of life they have had.
Guys
I have no experience of Hanbury Riverside, and I’m sure you would pay for their trucks, but I know you cannot compare what they are offering with trucks from Walkers which have clocked up 800K kms or so.
The £15K difference looks very attractive I know, but why not scour the market for low km alternatives.
The market is full of low km DAF XF’s - 410’s but these trucks provide a very sound investment.
For example Mac’s Trucks in Huddersfield has some of these on 58 plates with 200-odd kms on them for £29950.
I’ve just added several to my fleet and you wouldnt know the difference between a 410 and a 460 unless you are at 44 ton permanently, even so I consider this kind of low km truck to be a must when buying secondhand.
A while ago I thought low km trucks around 57-59 reg were like rocking horse ■■■, but they are about and you just have to keep looking.
Within the last year or so, I bought a '05 reg MAN XXL with 203K kms on it (OK I had to put an exhaust system on it) but for what I paid well worth it, as well as 10 DAF’s with 140 - 200 kms for approx 40% of their new price.
I still buy new ones but looking at these low km ones, its enabled me to stop hiring at £370.00 per week and put back some asset value into the company.
I couldnt sleep at night if I was buying high km trucks as repair bills are just bloody horrendous these days
Only my humble opinion of course…
Harry Monk:
This looks cheap to me at £22,750, 08-reg, 650,000km, any thoughts?
they might be owens road services daf has welsh reg.
i bought my 54 plate daf ssc of lee at hanbury when it was a year old all i will say is i got a very good deal the truck should have gone a couple of years ago but because of how well it has performed and the recession i still have it i have not decided what way to go next it will either be pack up which is doubtful or have a brand new one i would like one so i could spec it to exactly to what i would like but if my present truck gave up the ghost and i needed a truck quickly i would not hesitate and go back to lee

Yes, that sounds logical.
It is the right spec truck and the price is attractive, I might go have a look. The mileage is a little higher than I would want but not astronomical. I’m still looking around elsewhere though and I still have a few weeks to ponder it.
Ford and Slater at Kings Lynn got this 460 58reg ex Denbys Daf, judging by the tyre sizes, 315x70 id say its Denbys, so if you shipped out Harry, you would be spot on for 4mtr.
Looks good, although I always hate it when anyone advertises anything and doesn’t state the price…
Go to www.donedeal.ie Jan 2007 XF95 480 4x2 spacecab, euro 4,no adblue,AS-Tronic.38,600 miles, looks genuine to me.You could fit a lightweight mid lift axle for about 3-4 grand and have a practically new vehicle! I have an 06 XF same spec as this from new and honestly can’t fault it,the As-Tronic is a great auto once you master it,not as good as the i-shift for reversing and slow manouvering but I think it changes much better on the road, plus mine has never given me any trouble and it’s done all types of work from running to Germany,Austria etc,to hauling re bar to wind turbine sites, and multidrop with 25-30 drops per day.

For me that would be too high a mileage I think. In only 12 months that 650k will be nigh on 800 and another 12 months after that you’ll be fast bearing down on a million. If I was spending that sort of money I think I would be wanting something with well under 500k on it.

definatly ex owens motors they are still running 54/53 plates but selling 58 reg’s seems odd to me…

They probably own the older ones but rented the newer trucks.

With regard to the daf and am not saying this is not just an exception to the rule but when i bought mine 2005 54 plate xf480 ssc (remapped) the haulier actually said if it was not for the lez issue it would be the xf 105’s he would be selling as even after remapping them the 95’s were returning 1.5mpg more on same runs and same work, so perhaps on that basis is the reason owens are selling off the 105’s

Just to throw a spanner in the works, have you thought about leasing a new one Harry? Your work sounds good enough and at least you wouldn’t have to worry about breakdowns/catastrophic failure. You’ll be driving it as well so will appreciate & look after the truck. No initial outlay so you can keep your wedge in the bank. If you’re a ltd co and it goes pear shaped you can just bankrupt the ltd co, so no commitment. You can get a new FM for about £260 per week I think, i’m sure an FH wouldn’t be much more. Just play them off against each other. I appreciate you’ll not own anything at the end of the day but with eye watering depreciation your 3 years old purchase won’t be worth much in another 3 years anyway. Depends how much you can trust the firm you’re going on for of course, but either way it’s an educated gamble.
I have looked about leasing yes, but it’s very expensive and I am told you get hammered for every tiny blemish at the end of the contract and that a bill for several thousand pounds isn’t uncommon… I still haven’t made a definite decision either way though, and even now if I was offered a good job doing something reasonably enjoyable as an employee I would go and do that.
I have a vovlvo fh12 with 1.2million k on her now, still does a good days work, but i do think that generally the less mileage on a truck the better, there is a reason most the big boys shunt them out when the mileage creeps up, we have our own workshop and fitter, but every pound you spend on maintance is sadly a pound out of your profit, I have bought new in the past, but times have changed now, and i reckon you would need a good run and contract to make it all pay, for my next truck i shall look for the lowest mileage secondhand truck i can afford.

It’s more than a pound out of your profit because while you are spending that pound on getting it repaired it isn’t out there earning a pound. In my first year I had a run of problems and it cost me a couple of grand in loss of earnings on top of the repair bills. Reliability is paramount.

Yes paul you are right there but fortunately i have a couple of spare units, my scania is kept as a bit of a toy , so we can use that if we need to, but with only one motor you are right.

A problem maybe for company trucks driven by every Tom, ■■■■ and Harry, but if Harry’s the only one that going to drive it and treats it like he owns it there should be no problem.
I’ve done the lease hire thing in the past because at the time the price to lease a new truck was right and buying a second hand one was a no brainer.
No lease Co expects the truck to come back in showroom condition, all they can reasonably expect is no dings, no broken lights, no cracked windows/plastic, no livery to remove and the tyres are all legal.

Not forgetting; no holes anywhere, no baggy covering on the bunks, no visible wear on the drivers seat & no rust!! Be carefull on that last one as a mate of mine had a truck on a 2 year lease with a 2 year warranty, it had a couple of little scabs on one door and as it went back the warranty had run out (by 2 days) and he was charged a bloody fortune to paint the whole side of the truck!!! Had he reported the rust during the warranty period & had the work done before the truck went back it would only have cost him for the couple of days off the road!!!
Read & beware of the small print!!!
