An average of just over eight quid an hour. I wonder how much lower it can be driven for drivers, whilst the management drive around in nice motors.
A local company near me are currently crying the ‘not very busy mantra, we’re not making any money’ etc.etc.'. (I know one of the directors)
It may not be very busy or profitable but he still manages to live in a 6 bedroom barn conversion and currently drives around in a 45K Jag xf… [emoji38]
I’m glad I’m not struggling like him… [emoji38] [emoji38] [emoji38]
I’ve always said that if I ever have I company, I’ll keep a beaten up old micra to drive to work, especially when delivering bad news.
“Sorry lads, no pay rise this year, but can someone give me a push?”
They are paid for 62.5 hours a week or 12.5 hours a day even if they work less. Anything over is paid at overtime rate. As far as I know.
That is for day drivers. Trampers are contracted 10 hours a day. Not sure about night drivers
I figured as much, my breath was just taken away a bit by a 62.5 hour a week contract. It’s outrageous. I know plenty of firms already have 50-55 hour contracts, but thats like a whole other days work expected on top. Nobody should be expected to work that many hours a week before any overtime.

Driver shortage? I wonder why.
I’m contracted to 50 hours a week. That includes paid hour break. Not expected to do overtime either. If we work Saturday we are paid 5 hours but we do nothing other than drive from where we are on Saturday morning back to Base. If it takes longer than 5 we get paid the extra.
I would do everything in my power to avoid working long hours for crap hourly wage.

This is what I can’t get my head around. Contracted to a 50 hour week but don’t have to do overtime.
The average full time job is 38-40 hour’s a week, so based on that you are already doing 10-12 hour’s overtime, but being paid a basic rate.
You wouldn’t get much done in 7-8 hour shifts on containers. You can spend 4 on a bad day just getting your box on and off at the terminal, then you have travel time plus a tip/load of up to 3 hours.
No firm is going to pay out 10+ hours OT as standard every week to every driver just to do the basic job. The job is what it is, but 62.5 hours if true is excessive. I don’t think 10 hour shifts on a 5 day week is too much to expect of a driver, realistically.

Chainsaw, i do not concur with your statement of no UK drivers left in ten years time, it will be less than that, i predict two to three years, the reason is the old timers are hanging up their keys and not taking their drivers CPC.
What do you call ‘old timers’? 60+, 50+? There’s plenty of them, and they won’t be retiring, until at least the age of 65 or 66 (whatever), as they can’t afford to, because they’ve earned a low income all their life.
Oh, not to forget all the 20+, 30+, and 40+, who are much further away from retirement than they are!
There’s also lots and lots of new English drivers, who have just acquired their HGV licence/or in the process of learning. Some of those appear on here.
Which means that your theory sounds rather daft, doesn’t it.
Wages are crap because of all the people that ran bent and what ever else went on.They did it for a crap wage and the wage stayed crap.So blame the older drives working for a crap wage back then and running bent.
Thats the truth its not just happend my first job payed 6.72ph in 2005.I wanted a start and was always told wages will always be crap as a driver.
I have also heard older drivers saying there at fault so you cant blame the poles or anyone else for the wages in this country.Blame the other british drivers the truth hurts but doubt many on here will admit to it.

I was working a 40 hour week on £8.25 in security. It was pish and it bored the living ■■■■ out of me.
Would then do the odd 12 hour shift taking my week up to 52. Again at basic rate.
My job now is contracted to 50 hours but some days , like today, I don’t do the full 10 but still get paid for it.
Signing up to work 50%+ more hours than the average person and still earning below the average annual salary. Jesus Christ, I detest firms like these, whoever works for them wants their heads checking
Their past is absolutely abysmal! Always has been, years ago 2008 ish they tried to go the maritime route and have up using agencies, but their pay was so crap nobody wanted to work for them, seems like nothing’s changed!

I suspect that Goldstar also fit electricity meters to their trucks which would explain why their drivers are loath to flash anybody passing in.
Goldstar looks OK to me. Pay cood be beter but is everywhere hard to come by for Drivers.
Know the Traina at Colnbrook. He gets enough to have a Belly and a Happy Family. So it shall be enough for you too.

i agree with the whole container thing
rather earn a little less then do those sodding straps up on the curtain siders in the ■■■■■■■ down rain/wind.
In the good old days of roping and sheeting I could only dream about curtainsiders . Try roping and sheeting a high load on a 40 ft flat in the ■■■■■■■ rain and wind when you have just been chucked out of the nice sheltered warehouse because the bloody forky wants to go home to his nice warm house or nice warm pub!..such fun, good old days my arse

I still do bit roping and sheeting,Moving machines or special units on flats now.
It’s always a pain in the arse even if it’s sunny.
felixstowes full of these eastern drivers now. im often seeing them doing what i can only take to be some kind of fiddle at the cash machines. they put a card in,type in the pin with opposite hand in a flash -seconds later the cards on its way out but before the second beep of the beep noise to tell you the cards coming out theyre feeding in a second card. like a card trick its so fast took me ages to see how they do it
all so quick too, which to me means theyre doin it often
