In Spain, the truckers run over stray dogs,in the uk,the road would shut for 4 hours, awaiting the RSPCA,the force helicopter, and it would make the headlines in the local paper,or even prime time news channels,in my paper,a cat stuck up a tree makes the front pages, and 5 fire engines would turn up,to use it as a training exercise.
nickyboy:
.Comments on the BBC site are making my ■■■■ boil, one silly cow says " you can see quite clearly it was truck drivers who caused it"
On M74 this week another truck was overtaking me with a car right behind him, I was just flashing the guy in when the ■■■■■■ in the car pulls in front of me in the gap, causing me to brake up hard, and undertook the truck as he pulled in, and took off The point I am making is if similar carnage had occured as a result of this knob, who was long gone, all the cars behind me would have only seen what looked like two HGVs “causing an accident” This is what we are up against all the time.
Swans that mistake the motorway as a river, and land.

Yeah well I wouldn’t use the Spanish as an example of how to treat animals.
Besides why have you posted that bit of nonsense here?
They chuck donkeys off of church roofs for fun over there.
i was up and down that bit of the M5 a couple of times yesterday and there was some seriously HEAVY rain. i was doing 40- 50 mph and still had prats hurtling past at the limit some with no lights or only sidelights.
a friend went up past there on his way to Wales a couple of hours before it happened and said it was starting to get foggy.
no matter how safe we try and make the roads and vehicles there will ALWAYS be accidents/incidents where someone gets hurt or worse.
it only takes one domino to topple and the rest will fall.
Condolences to the bereaved and best wishes to the injured.

This week i’ve seen more accidents on the roads than any other week i can remember. The weather can’t be to blame as it’s been great for the time of year. Perhaps the clocks going back has been a factor. It’s really sad to see this accident happen though. I hope there are no more than the 7 confirmed fatalities. RIP.
That same reason was written in the comments of one the online papers. Why would an accident that happened at 8.30pm have been any less spectacular at 9.30pm, it is still dark at 5.30 / 6.00.
the weather played a major factor, it was heavy rain and then a blanket of fog.
No doubt HGV `s will make the headlines, like killer monster trucks, and the police will check the tacho, with 57 mph, instead of 56 mph,the paper will say speeding truck, even though you can go at 60 mph on a motorway.
Not to mention the smoke from the bonfires and the distraction by fireworks to rubberneckers.
Good point there, has the smoke from the fires caused this, they mentioned fog,but it was the smoke,it blew across the carriegeway to obstruct the vision, and maybe cause panic,at high speed, the brakes come on,the guy behind hits you.
Hello!
I’ve read about this tragic accident on our Text-TV today and it was near Somerset. What is the cause to such large accident happen and peoples died and become injured? I have noticed here cars as is driven in high speed is too close to each other and do not have time to react or brake without running into other cars. If we drive in a speed of 100 km/times we will ha a distance to next car of 100 metres and not 20-25 meters. But you have tree lanes and we two on the motorways. And we have steel cables as hold each lane separated. One lane can be 1 km long and then a 2 lane appears then 1 km of one lane and so on. They as have driven in Sweden know what I talk about.
But I can understand if there are tree lanes full of cars and Lorries at the some time. I can drive at max speed when another car suddenly runs at my back or overtakes me and get to near. It is other road runners as we not can rely on and in the autumn, suddenly an elk cross the road in the dark wood and if one hit such large animal its danger. The whole elk can be pressed into the cars interior and one can die if one is maximal unlucky. Hit 400 kg at 90 km/times will be a hard hit.
Have a nice evening!

I was on about the accidents up here, not the M5 accident, when i mentioned the weather. Most drivers just don’t respect the braking distance guidelines. Car drivers constantly encroach upon my braking distance on motorways, which really ■■■■■■ me off. They don’t realise the danger they put themselves and others in.

Lane discipline is awful in the UK Lars, we have one of the best motorway systems of anywhere, yet people can still drive on them with out any extra training
i know this is a very bad incident and my deepest condolences goes to the family of those who have lost people very close to them. in my oppinion this thread should stop, the reason is wee can all sit and put our oppinion on what happend, but none of us know. so please to respect those who have lost their lives no more posts. RIP.
It’s not beyond the bounds of possibility this whole thing was caused by someone seeing a police vehicle or some other stickered up vehicle and panicing at the speed they were doing and then braking hard and suddenly. It happens a lot on the roads - thanks to the authorities obsession with issuing speeding tickets, people stare at the speedo and automatically slam on the anchors if they see a patrol car or anything that looks like one. That, coupled with the fact that people do not have a clue at what a safe following distance is, especially not in adverse weather makes a recipe for disaster.
Mind you, I’d bet they’d never say so in any investigation. A tragic accident but one in which I will be very suprised if human error was not the culprit.
I’m not sure we truck drivers can take such a holier than thou view. In the last week while in the car, I have experienced at least 10 truck drivers following me with about 5ft between them and me.
Heartfelt condolences to all concerned.
