The first photo on the Mail’s website, taken today from distance, seems to show a concentrated pile-up with almost as many artics as cars involved but not much sign of the fires. Inevitably some comments on that link come from people with no understanding automatically blaming the lorry driver:- e.g. (selectively) “’ cut ’ up by a lorry driver causeing my driver to swerve into the 3 rd lane,so many lorry’s pulling out and racing each other”, “like all others lorries drive far too quickly almost touching”, “come and drive along the A14 every day with me and I’ll show you dozens of UK registered trucks doing 60 mph and more.”
but also the more sobering “too many people drive as if they are immortal”

There was a firework display taking place at the time of the accident,it said on the BBC breakfast news, that eye witnesses saw brake lights coming in everytime a firework went off,was the display too close to the motorway to provide a distraction to passing motorists,it would only take one driver to be looking for half a second to hit another vehicle.
The display was at a rugby club.
There is a rugby club right next to where the accident occurred Toby.
Bald bloke,i thought if anyone is planning an outside event that you have to go through all the legal stuff to get permission from the council and the police, did anyone work out how close the display was to the motorway, with all the elf n safety that dominates this island, has the location been overlooked.51 injured now, more to die later from their injuries.
My thoughts are with everyone involved in this terrible crash, and with there familys .
Who knows how this was caused lets, just stick with the FACTS some people have died some are fighting for there lifes , lets just hope the injured make full recoverys and our prayer’s with the dead and there family and friends .

I’ll be at one tonight which is at Avonmouth rugby club and that is right next to the motorway at the Avonmouth turn off so drive steady past there early evening time.
I was trained as an operations department practioner at a major hospital,to give some facts, the body has a self protection mechanism that shuts down the air way to protect your lungs, when you inhale smoke, the throat shuts,so in effect, you drown,as you can not undo that, the same when you breathe in fire, there was a haulage firm tipper boss called Tim Frew, from Frome in Somerset,he went out for a drinking session and dropped a ■■■ down his sofa,he opened the door to his flat,a back draft occured, and death followed in this way.
Hence why they say,you can drown in two inches of water, the throat goes in to a spasm,it is hard wired in to our brains.
You can see the last truck is Ginsters (Samworth Brothers), in the video you can just about make out Samworth Brothers on the rear of another trailer, i’m assuming the completely gutted one in front of the Ginsters one.
Comments on the BBC site are making my ■■■■ boil, one silly cow says " you can see quite clearly it was truck drivers who caused it" Unless i’m mistaken there are cars with frontal damage in front of the trucks, what on earth did they hit?

The amount of cars in front of the iceland and tnt lorries tells me the lorries where innocent parties in the initial accident. The police where paying a lot of attention to a mazda about half a mile up from the scene that also had damaged on it.
It is only car drivers that i see brake for no reason to gawk at something that is more interesting than their lives, truckers have a peripheral side vision of controlling their vehicle, and see what is going on at the same time.
Car drivers brake for anything,a passing highways vehicle,or when one is parked on top of a bridge, they all slow down, thinking it is a marked police vehicle.
A car having a tyre changed at the hard shoulder, seems to make their day.
This week i’ve seen more accidents on the roads than any other week i can remember. The weather can’t be to blame as it’s been great for the time of year. Perhaps the clocks going back has been a factor.
It’s really sad to see this accident happen though. I hope there are no more than the 7 confirmed fatalities. RIP.
i live at North Petherton between bridgewater & taunton , got all the motorway traffic coming through on the A38 !
i didn’t hear about this till this morning , very sad indeed,
sympathies to all involved , from what the man at the paper shop said , the M5 should be running again about 8 o’clock this evening if things go well but there’s a lot to do before that happens
