Any details Harry?
drove many cargos in my younger days…the last one being in around 1992 which was a 1990 G reg 1728 6 wheeler…290bhp ■■■■■■■ with 9 speed eaton range change…sleeper cab…29ft flat bed with drawbar coupling towing a 16ft trailer…had it from brand new and was 1 of 2 trucks built to special order…order placed by the company i worked for at the time being spider transport of slough…built as a 4 wheeler but was taken to chassis developments if there still going in leighton buzzerd to have the chassis streched and lifting rear axle fitted…registration was G57MGK the sister to this truck the last i heard went to ireland around 6 yrs ago…would be nice to know if g57 mgk is still around…got loads of pics from truck shows and of various loads on the back but no way of getting them up (no scanner)
many years ago (about 1990) the company I drove for hired a couple of 18 tonne two axle rigids with fridge bodies from Ryder, these were ford cargoes with V8 perkin engines, normally artic drivers did not like being given a rigid for the day but nobody complained about driving these trucks as opening the window and listening to the exhaust was more than enough compansation for being taken off their usual motor, they had a 4 over 4 range change box as i remember.
my old cargo…
loaded with 2 caterpillar generators bound for hull around 1991…
and a (Shadow Special)which i believe were a limited edition at the time…
i tried registering on your cargo site but it wouldn’t let me on due to something about my user name…i tried several names with no joy…you can lift the pics from here and add them if you wish…

Still a few cargos doing the rounds in New Zealand. Heres a pic from Stewart Island just off the southern tip of NZ.
There’s a rake of them over here in Arizona too. I get the feeling that they weren’t released here too long ago. I’ll start carrying my camera!
A couple of years ago I worked for a haulage company S Venni as a trainee mechanic who had a contract for the maintanance of another haulage firm Patterns Transport who ran a couple of old cargos. They were falling apart they were only fit for the scrap heap they were so bad!!!. And my boss all so had one for transporting his sons autograss car about but in every single one of them the rev counter didnt work was it a common fault on cargos??
I’ve just stumbled across a whole load of them working in the Florida sunshine at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. They operate the backlot studio tram tour pulling about 5 trailers in a road train of sorts.
Although this one is no longer working in the intended fashion…
the company i drive for had 100s in the 80s/90s mainly 1515 s,but they also had quite a few magirus deutz engined tractor units, and drawbar rigids.the units ran at 32t,scarey going down hill and trying to stop one. the last new ones we had where on c regs our transport manager got them cheap because they had stood in a field for 2 yrs because ford could not sell them.i think we were the only company running the maggie engine ones,i have got photo of one of them somewhere i will try to find it.we also had a 7.5t 0813 with a 1515 engine in it ,1 of a 100 specaliy built by ford to celebrate 10,000 cargos that been built, this had the build no on a brass plate in the cab,
my dad had one new in 1984 but was on a X-plate. It was a cargo 1517 skip loader with a V6 Deutz for Ellis Davies of Trelogan. It was originally a left hand drive but converted to right hand drive and uprated to 16 tonnes.
When I was running down to the Arabian Gulf, as soon as you got into Turkey and until you got out into Iraq or Syria, you were up against overloaded Ford Cargos that went like S#*t off a shovel. They would spew flames out of the exhaust and the drivers would overtake anywhere and everywhere they could, on blind bends and up and down hills, with big sign written Mashallah on headboards and the back of Tanker bodies, in the hands of Allah !
Mostly they were 6x2 with a bogie axle that would only be clear of the ground sometimes when empty. Here is a photo of some Cargo’s and D series overtaking towards me when I was nearly at the bottom of Tarsus.
I will sort through my pics for some more examples of Fords fine work.
They were built in Turkey from CKD parts (Complete Knock Down) I was amongst lots of Lawrabian drivers that took the Ford Production Plant to Hydarpasa, Istanbul during the eighties, where these Cargo’s were assembled.
They were called OTOSAN and are probably still going strong today.
B.J. Myers Haulage of Greenwich, South London had three Cargo 38 ton six wheel tractors in late 1989, one F reg and two G reg.
Running alongside a fleet (40-odd) Iveco’s they were put in service as a low tare weight tractor. Unfortunately the 10 litre ■■■■■■■ 290 used to blow up rather too often, unlike the same engine in the ERF. In the Ford, it was said the expansion tanks were too small allowing the engine to overheat. The F Reg truck was one of two prototypes and given to Myers firstly on demo, before joining their fleet. The vehicles all suffered blown engines at least twice in their first year, and were taken back by Iveco Ford and replaced with Turbostars. Ask any driver who remembers them, they were very smart, metallic Burgundy and Silver, but hopelessly underpowered and poor to sleep it, unless you were vertically challenged!
Not sure if you have seen it guys, but I have found this site:
Lots of pics. Hope it is of use.
Cheers
