I can see why mrginge`s company are buying 750 Volvos. Seems like a suitable tool for the job in hand.
The rest of the new Volvo’s for the waste division are 500’s and a mix of double drive, mid lift and 2 new tag axles a few weeks back. These lorries are never at more then 44ton so the 500 is more then enough. The 750’s only do plant work but another company that works with us South Wales Wood have 750’s pulling walking floors and their boss told mine about the mpg and there wasn’t really anything in it compared to our 500’s to be honest.
We still have a couple of 10yr old Volvo double drives with 400+420hp on landfill work and they are terrible with mpg figures around 4.5 - 5.2mpg
The amount of drivers that the first words are how much did all then lights and bars cost you. Shuts them straight up when I say nothing the boss puts it all on as part of his spec
A Flagship truck is exactly what it says on the tin.
A piece of companies pride and joy, and a very strong advertising tool.
The amount of people who talk about a standing out truck is amazing.
I didn’t know anything about Bull’s transport, but after all the free advertising on here, and I did have a look on their website
And that its all where it’s for, any publicity is good, people know the name, and it gives the company a certain branding.
It would be a grey world if everybody had the same standard truck in white.
How boring would that be?
But anything sticking his head above the field, will get mowed down by the grey masses of boring people, who’s only aim seem to be money, money, money.
Enjoy life and try to be different, money is not going to give you a nicer death.
Live and let live!

Well I aint ashamed to say I primarily work for money, I would love to do early retirement to the Seychelles, but I can’t afford it So I am forced to do the only thing I can do, and what I am good at…driving a truck, if that makes me a grey boring person, I will hold my hands up if that is your definition.
As I keep saying I have driven many blinged up trucks, and would prefer one today, but there is no way I am spending 3, 4, 5, grand to achieve this, if I did and my boss went to the Seychelles instead of me…who has paid for it?
Good luck to Luke, he has found something he likes doing on a bloody good truck, his boss appears to be happy with him and the extra pr he is bringing to his co, and I would imagine he is well paid for it, and I am certainly not knocking him for it.
I can’t see the difference between putting bling on a truck you own or on a truck you drive for someone else. It’s still dead money and does nothing to increase productivity, or does it?
Think about it, if a bloke wants to add bling to his truck and he can do so, whether he owns the truck or not makes no difference, he will be happier and happy workers are better workers.
From a bosses perspective a driver that bolts a couple of grand of his own money on to his truck or spends many hours polishing his truck is more likely to stick around.

But Lukes sterling efforts at the keyboard still leave me unconvinced. Im more with Rob as Id like my companys income to be spent on a pay rise for me, not a “flag ship” motor to impress the neighbours.
This may surprise you but it really isn’t an either/or situation. This lorry wasn’t bought instead of giving drivers a pay rise. Bull are a serious rarity in this industry, almost no driver turnover at all, which says something important about our pay and working conditions does it no? If we were badly paid you may have a point but I’m actually earning more now than I ever have.

Best of luck to you. Nice truck, and youre happy with your job. Seems the others there are happy too. And Id guess your boss has a secret somewhere. Many others are crying about hard times/ poor rates/ cut to bone competition, so, good on ya!

I agree. It’s a common misconception that its either a CF and top money or Globetrotter and peanuts. In fact, a decent working environment would be a good thing on top of good pay. Why strive for one and not the other? I would like to see trampers being provided with decent hotels and parking facilities but that’s not going to happen. Doesn’t mean in the enlightened 21st century you shouldn’t strive for improvement.
Decent post Jim. What I don’t get though is this; WHY do some drivers feel better with shiny bits and 1000 lights bolted to 5 light bars?
I can honestly say that I wouldn’t feel ANY better if my XF had alloy wheels, LED lights, chrome stack exhaust, airbrush paintjob etc. It’s not mine and it wont drive or perform any better anyway.

But you’re just assuming they feel ‘better’ than others. Most I’ve met don’t feel anything of the sort. Don’t mistake their pride in their vehicle for them thinking they are better than you.

To be fair he didn’t say that. He said they feel better, not they feel better than others. Maybe Eager means they feel some good out of putting these things on, a bit like a hobby makes someone feel good. But as to why, that’s only something they know. I get my kicks from other hobbies
Not knocking pride at all mate. In fact I wish more drivers used bins, didn’t ■■■■ all over the floor, drive over grass verges, etc, etc.
What I would love to understand is the ‘benefit’ to any driver pimping their truck up. I am sure certain applications require more horsepower, and that I get. I also understand trampers personalising the inside of their cabs.
But I simply do not understand why a driver would spend thousands of pounds of their hard earned money on something that does not belong to them. You wouldn’t pay for a neighbours conservatory, so why spend thousands on your bosses truck?

If you don’t understand then you never will, the same way people can’t understand what other people spend their time doing, it’s not something I’d do, but I do like nice trucks tastefully customised, but I understand some people see this more than a job, they actually like what they do and they get knocked for it, but who is the bigger fool, somebody who love their job and wants to spend a bit of money on the truck they drive or the person who spends most of their waking hours in a job they hate.
Well put Muckles. Your post reminds me that when I was younger I was always getting grief because I preferred working to going out drinking. They called me sad despite me being the one who loved their life and them the ones doing jobs they hate and living for the weekend.
Christ is all this moaning about other people all you Drivers can do, no I never spent any money on company motors, but I do not want everybody to be the same as me, hell I’m unique if they want to do it good luck to them its their money and their life, why is it that so many people these days are so worried about what their fellows are doing instead of looking at their own miserable lives…Tony.
If that’s aimed at me fella, you are wide of the mark. I am fortunate to have decent health, a loving family and I enjoy my job. I don’t care if people take drugs, gamble, bum animals or whatever. Makes no difference at all to me.
I am simply curious as to why people spend thousands of pounds improving other peoples trucks.

I aint going to keep pre empting with ‘‘I realise it has nothing to do with how someone spends their money’’ etc, I fully understand that, so don’t come back at me with it, but the prime reason for working is to earn a living.
I’ll try and simplify my view on this.
It’s a bit of a paradox to earn money to spend on the thing that is the means to earn that money, especially when you are handing that money back to the guy who pays you in the first place…so what is the point of working. (Ok maybe not simplified )
As I said, my wife loves her job in a transport distribution office, but she sure as hell would not spend her own money on a computer upgrade, or air con in her office.
So yeh, you are right, I will never understand it.
Btw Tony mate, I aint ‘‘worried’’ , in actual fact in real terms I don’t give a ■■■■ tbh, just discussing it in the theme of the forum, and my life is far from miserable…just saying.

I’d stop being curious and accept the fact we’re all different, and sometimes there is no logic or reasonable explanations.
PS, I’m pleased you’re able to count your blessings. sounds like you’ve got it sussed.

And I suppose neither do I, I will buy stuff for the cab that makes my life more comfortable or easier, but I’ve never bought bling for my truck, although I am trying to spend the companies money of a truck with a few bling bits, but that’s for the motorsport image thing, honestly.
Cheers Muckles. Spent a lot of time around older folk when I was young and tried to pick up on their wisdom. Part of it is a sort of mental bone idleness I suppose. It’s always made logical sense to me to listen and learn from people who have made the mistakes and learned from them.
I think losing my parents young also taught me the value of life, and to try and be ’ efficient ’ in the way I live mine. Despite acting like a bellend very often (which I profoundly enjoy), I also love to learn from others. Which is where my curiosity with regards to truck customisation comes in. I can understand pimping your OWN truck, but maybe you are right. Perhaps spending money on other peoples trucks makes some drivers happy.
I think some drivers have a view that hauliers who purchase top end wagons, claw some of the expense back by paying poor wages. I cannot comment on this because I have no idea, but Switchlogic says he gets paid well and I see no reason for him needing to embellish this so perhaps it is another RDC myth.
Some drivers ARE happy to drive a blinged motor though for crap money, and these drivers are not doing the rest of us any favours in my view.
