truckyboy:
The 56mph came about because of the oil crisis back in the 80`s
Did we have an oil crisis in the '80s? I always though that around 1985 there was an oil glut and the price of 4* dropped from about £1.75 a gallon (remember those) to around about £1.55. The glovebox of the old fella’s XJ12 was full of free glasses and tiger tokens and even he could afford to run it.
It is definitely the European Union which is to blame here. There is no 56mph
limit, only a 90km/hr limit, introduced throughout the EU with no exceptions.
The daftest piece of legislation for years which makes all HGVs, large or
small, heavy or light conform to approximately (because no electronic
equipment is good enough to be so exact) the same speed limit, hence the
elephant races.
And if it takes this idiot a few minutes more to do his 20 miles on the M6, why
not? To do as he suggests and either slow down or not attempt a pass at all
could cost a heavy goods driver much more than that over a long haul.
The fault lies fairly and squarely with short sighted legislators.

We are all aware that operators must get maximum operation from a vehicle within the law.
I do a trunk run from Stoke to Brighton at 02.00 every Saturday morning. In a “Normal” 56 mph truck, this can take me 4 hours 25 minutes, give or take a couple of minutes. So I can’t afford to hang about,if it means slow overtaking, that’s the way it’s got to be.It’s all well and good to say it doesn’t cost much time to stay behind someone travelling fractionaly slower, but over 4 hours it all adds up.If I lose 6 minutes,I can’t get there before needing to take a break.
If I get a “Faster” 56 mph truck,I manage to pass quite a lot of others on the way down, not really blowing their windows out,but only taking half a mile to overtake them. This can bring my journey time down to 4 hours 10 minutes.
It means I can knock the cruise control off when going round the M40/M25 slip road.
Is this just down to the tolerance of calibrating speed limiters? If so,what is the tolerance limit?I’m sure the new trucks,(No names,no pack drill),that blow my windows out doing 65 plus mph are on the upper limits of of tolerance.(Said with tongue firmly in cheek).
I haven’t worked it out, but what’s the difference in circumference of a brand spanking new tyre and a just legit one? That would account for a fair variation.
I suppose if I were to get a vehicle calibrated on just legit tyres and then fit brand spanking new one. I would be able to go so much quicker than a vehicle calibrated on brand spanking new ones that have worn down to just legit. Anyone know the percentage?

Excuse me? hello? Have we not strayed from point? What about Mr. Moaner?
I blame the Cuban Missile Crisis for the Overall effect of Crude oil based on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP)of Lithuania.Watergate also played a major role,in the dessecration of the rainforests.
If it was’nt for those facts, trucks would’nt have been limited to 56 mph,and people just would’nt drive so bad.

Mate you’re lucky, if you had to use the M8 to commute every morning you would probably have had a stroke by now or some other serious heart related condition.
