This is a shot of an ex K.Fell F88 now in Bewick livery when this shot was taken, having been re-furbed and re-painted and embarking on a second life.It is seen here leaving the depot with 20 ton of reels.

Your “on” “H” 290/16spd this motor did some collar I can tell you,it was driven from new by Lenny Richards and he regularly did three round trips a week Milnthorpe to the South east tip then re-load or change trailers and up to Hartlepool tip and load and back to Milnthorpe.Dennis.
looking at last phote, never seen a f88 with square headlights worked on these from 76

Andrew there was a regulator button on the dash when you used it the smoke was minimal but mine was one of the last models “S” plate and it had a lot of trial stuff on for Volvo ( I always thought it was the engine ) and it had a weekend in Volvos every 6 months for them to check things but they would not tell me which parts they were monitoring.
cheers Johnnie

hi johnnie,
the regulator button helped a little.to be fair, many times whilst i had mine, which was a 240 (so no smoke at all),my mate from kent had his 290,many times he started that motor from cold whilst parked next to or near me and often with minimal smoke,he used one of the modern generation synthetic engine oils, which to be fair reduced the smoke problem considerably .
regards andrew
From memory the first 290s had a preheat button on the centre console, then on start up the exhaust pressure regulator ( a rocker switch & green light? , ) kept the exhaust brake on for a few minutes on tickover , then it was ready to roll- if this procedure was not carried out then smoke as above would happen

Hi Boris I had one of the last ones and the pre heat was on the ignition then pulled switch up turn key to first position and when light went out start thanks for jogging this old brain cell
