This is likely due to DB Schenker running their BIFT train straight on to the Terminal from January 1st instead of into Ipswich, Pentalver covered the shunting from Port to Ipswich

From the freightliner northern depots its £50 cheaper to use the train than road them down.

you can see why then cant ya 50 quid a box can save a good few quid

Here’s a question for the experts, do Freightliner (being intermodal) get to run their trucks cheaper, road tax etc?

I ask because I often work in & out of F/liner Garston & have noticed how they are busier now than they ever have been before & it’s nothing to have a turn around time of up to 2 hours, & I think I have fund out why!! I have noticed recently how many trucks they have parked up there if you arrive early in the morning, many many more than they ever did in years gone by.

I understant that since they (Freightliner) closed their railhead at Seaforth dock, all traffic now comes into their Garston depot & is shunted by road (on their own trucks) to Seaforth dock!!

My point is, if by being an ‘intermodal’ operator they get to run their trucks cheaper, surely by closing their depot @ Seaforth thereby having to haul them by road, clearly to save money on the Seaforth operation, these Garston - Seaforth movements shouldn’t be seen as truly intermodal and they should be paying the same costs as a road haulier?

Just a thought, Ross.

It’s funny you should say that bigr, Freightliner Leeds look to operate more trucks now than ever

no, the drivers are in competition with the machine operators, to see who can go the slowest :unamused:

Fantastic, but in Liverpool that battle is won hands down by the machine operators!! :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

YES, i was once sent down to southampton to collect a unit and trailer and they couldnt put a box on the trailer due to reasons concerning the tax… so i came back to leeds empty skel. :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

they used to have 2 lorries taxed for port runs incase of emergancy.

dont forget the goverment green taxes for running the trains.

Apparently the substation that serves Freightliner Trafford Park cranes went down over a week ago and they’re operating one crane on a generator with the other crane parked up, it’s caused no end of problems for the past 10 days

for the past three days crane 1 has been parked up with a 40 ft box hanging in mid air :open_mouth: with a few cones so drivers dont drive into it

They tried running both cranes on the genny last Wednesday or Thursday and both went down which is probably why crane one has a box on, they reverted back to just one crane and its working ok, although with a crane down its slow going

It seems to me that it’s the rail freight industry that’s putting all the pressure on the road transport industry by taking work away from it and then the blame is being diverted onto the surviving road transport operators. :open_mouth: :unamused:

What a surprise a report commisioned by the rail freight industry calls for even more protection for the rail freight industry. :imp: :unamused: Even though it’s obvious that the rail freight industry is hauling more freight and the sector is growing. But according to them they can’t survive because the road transport industry is ( supposedly ) competing with them even with the present levels of protection which rail benefits from.Total bs.

Which is then being used as an excuse by the rail freight industry to ask it’s cronies in the EU,which obviously includes the British government,to artificially make the road transport industry even less competitive than it is at present,by putting even more protectionist measures in place,in favour of the rail freight industry, than the already outrageous ( what should be illegal ) levels of protection which it asks for and gets now.Which would obviously put even more drivers out of work.

So the zb’s obviously won’t like my calls to level the playing field between road and rail transport even more than it is at present by allowing LHV’s and the use of red diesel in trucks and tell the rail freight lot to zb off tough if they can’t compete in a fair trading environment. :imp: :unamused:

Sorry to bounce this back but did someone buy Elite out in the end as I passed one of their Scania’s pulling a box on the M6 last night, thought it was a touch odd after I read they went under?

Elite have not gone under, no matter what you have read on here, they have closed 2 depots, Felixstowe and Southampton

they are still trading

They’ve cut back but are still operating
