Dover-Calais crossings today

GORDON 50:
Given there are no major UK car manufacturers left; would you prefer foreign owned factories, or no factories at all?
In the real world there doesnt seem another choice. Correct me if Im wrong.
I would refer that we hadn’t sold it all off to foreign companies in the first place but yes, I agree that foreign owned plants are better than none but that’s not my point. If we can have a successful auto industry for other countries where all the profit goes abroad then why can’t we do for ourselves? Germany has managed to keep it’s manufacturing as has other countries.

On the one hand I certainly agree with your sentiments, and I too wish that we werent where we are now. We could argue about what mistakes have been made, but here we are trying to make the best of it. And that *is* my point. we are where we are. To keep those factories that do provide employment, and to encourage more investment in factories, and plant that provide stable employment, (not "investment" in hedge funds etc) Ive always maintained that being an integral part of a big market is the way to go, however, not everyone agreed.

Germany has had a very different post war financial history to us, that`s true.

I await the usual suspects to explain the exact and and precise reasons and cures.

GasGas:
Honda Swindon has closed for a couple of days…‘supply problems’ just after the Xmas/NY shutdown.

This was the factory that was billed as having a ‘bright future’ post Brexit, but is now going to close for ever this Summer.

Worked out well, hey?

About 3 paragraphs down…“Honda said the move was due to global changes in the car industry and the need to launch electric vehicles, and it had nothing to do with Brexit”
The car plants are more likley to close UK plants down due to our less stringent labour laws. It is far easier to sack people in the UK than in lets say Germany.
So please please please can you stop the drivel and lets move forward in life!

Honda’s factories in France, Spain and Italy all remain open…

They don’t have factories in any of those countries though.

Honda don`t have car plants in those countries, but do have lawnmower and motorcycle plants.

To be honest I was more interested in what impact Brexit had had on waiting times for trucks at Dover rather than discussion about Brexit in general. As far as I’m aware the only delays are due to the need to travel via Manston Airport for Covid testing?

I feel this is a valid question to ask, given that the suggested 50-mile queues of trucks was one of the major cards in the hand of pro-Remain supporters. Is it time to accept that this was no more than “Project Fear”?

Apparently 85 fines have been issued so far for not having the Kent permit. At £300 a time it seems to be a nice little earner :open_mouth:

Harry, for a man of your experience and I assume you know this is normally one of the deadest weeks of the year in Dover you really seem to be pushing the agenda that technically the newspapers were wrong.

The queues were certainly there in December and perhaps again in February but you are 100% correct, No queue on Jan 1st

However I have heard there is now a bad smell of no so “Fresh Fish” in Manston at the moment due to a bit of confusion as to what happens if you get a positive test result. :open_mouth:

This is what’s happpening in Portsmouth for goods vehicles exiting the UK

Speaking to our drivers , it’s going well

If there are queues because of COVUD then clearly that us not the fault of Brexit.

If the media predict queues because of a No Deal Brexit, then clearly that hasn’t happened. Having a deal means less queuing than not having a deal.

If the media report someone saying there will be queues then clearly it is the speaker making the predictions not the paper.

Things are certainly not up to speed yet regards holidays, and pre Brexit stock piling.

I asked Harry previously if he has any links to news media saying there would be 50mile queues? I don’t recall seeing any.

‘Pushing the agenda’ how very dare you accuse Harry of this. Didn’t you get the memo? It’s only those on the left and ‘remoaners’ who have agendas and follow like sheep, not our great British right wing / Brexiteer free thinkers!

So far, so good.
Sat on my sofa I`ve had no problems yet. See what happens over the next few weeks.
Do you know how Laurent Pellier are doing? I believe they do quite a bit of un-acc work?

From your link:
“Hauliers must have either have been to a triage point and have a pass, or be a pre-approved special load before heading to the port. This includes hauliers bringing trailers that will be shipped unaccompanied, as the paperwork is for the load, not the driver”

So, those UK drivers doing droppers will be doing the export papers before they can enter the port zones.
I don`t think that is how many advocating more Ro-Ro work thought it would work?

Some goods for export are not accompanied by the correct papers yet so arent even being loaded. Clearly they will not be contributing at all to any queues at the ports, but equally clearly that doesnt mean that all is well.

Hopefully teething troubles will be overcome, and things will go smoothly, but it really is too early to call this either way.
