Do you try to take a sneaky 15 min break at the pumps?

mrx:
if the drvr is free to do what he wants why cant that include shifting a few pallets?

Well you could put that argument to any work couldn’t you, I can imagine a VOSA bods face when he’s told that the driver spent an hour unloading the vehicle but it was still rest because the driver freely chose to do it

Red Squirrel:
Nope, I wouldn’t try to take a sneaky break at the pump since there’s other places you can do that but I don’t see anything wrong with getting yourself a cup of coffee whilst your handing your card over that you can drink whilst filling up, especially when all the other pumps are empty and nobody else is waiting. As for taking a leak in the petrol station toilets, there’s no shortage of posts on this forum from ppl whingeing about truckers ■■■■■■■ elsewhere and just how impatient are drivers becoming that they’ll begrudge a colleague using the toilet at a petrol station which will take only a minute or two at the most? I detect a slight hint of hypocrisy on this thread, would you all sooner the petrol station didn’t sell anything apart from fuel ever■■? Are you all saying you NEVER BUY ANYTHING ELSE from a petrol station whilst filling up■■? Strange these places sell so many things then isn’t it. And I take it you all use your bare hands to handle the petrol pumps and then wonder why you get dermatits? I find it revolting just how much hatred and intolerance is being sown on these internet forums lately. So if you see a lorry driver buying something at a petrol station He (or She) is running bent now, huh? Get a life ppl.

I think you’re missing the point here mate, if you read the ops post he’s not talking about just getting a coffee or whatever, he appears to be talking about deliberately hanging the job out to get a break in on the pumps.

In other words, associating the sort of behaviour described in the OP with something completely irrelevant so it can be condemned. A type of fallacy: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man

I hope that’s all it is.
There’s enough throat cutting going on these days already.

Okay, thanks for the link. I imagine it’s very good. So what’s your point? Am I missing something?

i can take a 30min at the bp stafford services on the m6,mine takes 1300 litres and those pumps are so slow i put the nozzles in and go for a coffee or burger king while ime waiting, now that must count as a break.

The kind of behaviour described in the OP is illegal. Sneaking a break while technically doing other work. So what we are condemning here is relevant to the OP. I’d try not to quote too much from wiki as its well known for its inaccuracies.

My point was that are we now to associate everyone who buys a cup of coffee, takes a leak, wears their gloves (and of course you should use gloves) or buys a kit kat with running bent and being selfish. Truth is, drivers should have more patience. They don’t own the place and other drivers have just as much right to be there as they do. I’m pretty sure not many driver’s take a break on the pumps. The worst I ever encountered was a driver asleep at his wheel on the pumps but I’ve only ever seen that once and that was a foreign truck probably not used to our conventions.

Yes. However, ^^these words^^ are yours. This is your interpretation of what I said, which (if you re-read my posts you will see) is nothing like what I actually said. Your words, not mine.

Personally, if there’s room, I usually fill up then pull clear of the pump before I walk in to pay allowing my fellow driver behind to get on the pump and follow me in to hand in his card

Plenty of time to take a squirt and grab a coffee then :grimacing:

I wasn’t responding to what you said, I was referring to the OP and some of the resonses to it.
