Didn’t take any tests for some years. i lived in Belgium, took my UK provisional car licence into the police station, and walked out with a full Belgium licence with all categories on! This was before we were in the EU. Drove cars, and trucks for Fords all over europe on that licence for 7 years.
when i returned to the UK, after 1 year I had to take a car test, passed 1st time. Then joined to fire Service who insisted i take a Class 2 even though i had it already on my Belgium licence, passed 1st time no faults, paid for my own UK class 1, again already had it on my belgium licence but nobody would take me on with it, passed 1st time with 1 minor, took the DSA RLGV Instructors test, passed 1st time 2 minors. Never bothered with PCV as I don’t like carrying loads that can answer me back!

‘…Did you pass your LGV Tests first time…?’
Yes and no
Bike test 1st time cost £1 no lessons 1964
Car test 1st time cost £1 + 10 x 1hr lessons @ £1 lesson 1965
HGV Class 1 1st time cost £30 + 5 days @ £30 p-day lessons 1979
The best thing I saw was a guy drive a loaded artic into the learning yard whilst I was learnig get out and into the test wagon went and took his test and passed then got back into his loaded artic and carried on with his Job . that was at Peterborough in 1979.

Car and motor bike first time,LGV took 3 times, worn out give way on the tarmac, well that is my feeble excuse,or money making for the examiners.!!I went straight across with out looking.
Passed my bike test at first attempt, car test at second go. Passed C and C+E both at first attempt (but I really don’t know how I managed the first one - I stalled it on the braking exercise!).

goes to show practice makes perfect however i have a lot of it to get it untill i get near perfect
Car test 1st time. Class 3 2nd time 5 days after first test and with the same examiner think he felt sorry for me . Class 1 first time
Car Test…1st time
Class 2…1st time
Class 1…1st time
Had the same examiner for both Class 1 and 2 tests, (sound bloke) although he wasnt to impressed about having to haul himself into the R cabbed Scania Id borrowed for my class 1, protesting that he was only used to climbing into F7 Volvo
s and other such low cabbed motors.
I took my car test at a Neale Street, Ipswich driving school in '73. When we got back there after me passing there were two policemen looking over and old Commer lorry with no tax or ‘O’ license displayed and parked on double yellows. ‘Someones in trouble’ the instructor said. ‘Hope not’ I replied ‘cos its mine’. Was on my way to Redruth in Cornwall from Bury st Edmunds with a load of Helmsmen lockers and had only bought that heap the day before.
ps. the law was satisfied with my explanation of why no licenses … phew
Hiya…motorbike 1st time 2 weeks after 16th birthday … 5 shillings =25pence
car first time 1 month after 17th birthday… 4 lessons x 5 shillings and my test 7 shillings and 6 pence
class 1… 2 months after 21st birthday 2 x1hour lessons and test £45… i was out on my test for 17 mins.
i was driving along a lane, there was a car on one side of the road and a bread van on the other side.
the examiner said they need to move, i said no problem but i,ll have to mount the pavement,
i pulled up to the pavement stopped then eased up the kerb gently and away. the examiner said
go back to the test station after a few mins, i got back he said well done enjoy you driving.

Passed my car test 1 week after my 17th birthday and my class1 2 weeks after my 21st birthday 34 years and a few miles ago
can’t remember a thing about my car test but i’ll never forget my class 1 test coming round the first roundabout outside yeading test station in the 1418 mercedes with the very old square cab with the rounded edges there was a cough from the passenger seat i checked the mirrors and the o/s tyres on the trailer were rubbing the kerb and just about to ride up put that right a bit quick and then had a great drive , got back to the test station and as he started to ask the highway code questions he got out the pass certificate and started to fill it in , I don’t know what I did but I must of got a bit cocky and he very deliberatly put it away again and kept asking questions for ever I was such a wreck after that that I had to get the instructor to drive back to the yard !!!

Love that user name, dont worry mate, the novelty will soon wear off.
Class 2…1st time.
Class 1…1st time.
It was my C+E test date Gembo, ironically the last time I drove an articulated as everyone seems to want experience taking on newly qualified drivers, Looks like I will be in the ridgeds a little while longer.
Took me 2 attempts to pass me car licence but with me class 1 it was all booked with a compeny friend when he had a cancellation so he rang my boss & told him to send me down & take the cancelled test & he would pick up my bad habits when i obviously fail it!
Only went & bloody passed it & i had only just turned 21 at the time too! That was in 1990 before you had to progress through the classes. As a reward i got a 142 to play with!
YES 1976 Class 1 HGV
YES 1977 PSV
So very pleased I did that. Getting my licence was the best thing I ever did. Opened up a whole new world for me, gave me a job I enjoyed for many years, gave me confidence, and a fantastic sense of achievement. I have had a brilliant life lorry driving.
Ilona
