Did I pass?...well read on

ROG:
If a trainee knows about problems within the training school or personal ones that the instructor has then I have to ask why?

The trainee has enough to take in with the training without anyone trying to overload their brain with unnecessary info.

Exactly Roger… i knew more about the instructors problems with the training school than i did about driving a hgv… and all this while i was trying to learn to drive!

it started on the 1st morning BEFORE i even stepped into the truck as the instructor wont even enter the office of the company unless he absolutely has to! and that continued throughout… it really stressed me out to be honest.

K27 about the mobile phone m8 it did bother me because i was getting directions by him pointing at roads and junctions, i didnt think this was very safe and i had to ask him where to go a few times. I know from yesterdays conversation with Stockport HGV that they’ll deny what ive claimed if it comes to action by trading standards… but all mobile phone conversations, exactly where and when they took place are logged by the network companies. Now i know for a fact they’ll be a record of a call made from this instructors phone on the time and date i was having a lesson, and the location of the phone call can be tracked too… it’ll show he was on his phone during my lesson on the move. The police can access this as can many other public bodies…ie trading standards.

i did actually have respect for the company because i was promised a free test on several ocassions but obviously that wasnt going to happen, so now my opinion of them is not good, why lie to me?

on the advice of trading standards ive sent them another letter, posted yesterday by recorded delivery, and if i have no response them ive to get back in touch with trading standards.

im hesitant to say more at the moment but believe me theres a whole can of worms i could open up on here.

And i WILL relieve all on here if this isnt resolved to my acceptance.

by the way i invite Stockport HGV to refute anything ive posted here, they know its here because ive emailed them the link.

@Christian :open_mouth: :unamused: :slight_smile: I’m keeping stumm

I would agree. The trainer is there to train you. His personal problems are of no concern to you. You have paid good money for his expertise as a trainer and that is what he should be concentrating on.

Yeh you are correct gentlemen, but, how I see is that the Instructor was merely trying to create an informal/pally enviroment so the candidate so they can mellow out. And secondly,I could have connections with an employment lawyer…those that speak the loudest get heard.

ROG:
overload their brain .

That excludes me,I’m sure I am a cyborg

I would say the trainer and company are well out of order.

A letter to the DSA about this conduct may be needed. I understand K 27 and his “getting pally” as to bridge gaps, but a line has to be drawn some where.

Not in the DSAs remit.

Hi everyone, this is my first post but I just had to say something about all that’s going on here. I’m a garden decking fitter and I wanted to get my C licence in order to get agency work to fill up gaps in my diary. I’ve very little experience driving anything bigger than a transit so knew this would be a challange. I knew that Stockport LGV had a good reputation locally so thought I’d try them.

I had my assessment with the instructor that K27 had (lets call him ‘Mr R’)and was shocked at how unprofessional he was. I don’t know how K27 can say he was a good instructor and was trying to create a relaxed atmosphere. He made some very inappropriate comments and his coaching skills involved insulting me and generally swearing alot. There were also several phone calls as previously mentioned.

HOWEVER… I have been training this week with Stockport LGV and the fantastic instructor Karl. I did 4 hours on Wednesday, 8 hours on Thursday and 4 on Friday followed by my test. All the training was 1 on 1, with the same instructor thoughout. I thought that 1 to 1 was great. When I did feel that my brain was going into meltdown, Karl would spot this and drive for 10 minutes while I calmed down. Seeing someone with his skill driving really helps you to relax and inspires you to do better. He’s like a duck; calm on the surface with all the work going on underneath. I’m not sure in a 2 to 1 situation how watching someone else hit curbs and not check their mirrors would help me improve, I did all this by myself anyway

By time I arrived for my test I felt confident in the skills I had learnt and knew that if I failed it would be down to me making a silly mistake on the day.

THE TEST…

I did some show me/tell me questions first(no problem with the training being spot on) and then the controlled stop followed by the reverse. In response to a previous comment the layout is the same as that in Stockport LGV’s yard, if anything I thought there was more space at the test centre and with the help of the genius little marker on the mudflap that you line up with the yellow box I lined up perfectly.

Then out onto the streets… The drive went perfectly to begin with until 10 minutes into the test I went though a green light at some roadworks to be met be an OAP coming through the other way after missing the red light. Did I panic—no, I went into duck mode, got under control and waited for him to back out and let us all through (thankyou Karl, 24 hours early I’d have gone into meltdown, missed my gear, probably stalled and then hit the kerb for good measure  ).

Next obsticle was to go straight over a busy cross roads with traffic signal control (Crown point in Denton coming from the Bredbury side if you know the area). The lights turned green and off I went following a bus. Again Karl’s advice kicked in and I thought, this bus is my problem, I’m going to let him clear the junction before I get in the yellow box. What do you know, straight after the junction the bus stops with no signal and would have left me stranded blocking the whole junction. As it was I’d passed the lights but wasn’t into the yellow box and was far enough forward not to block the pedestrian crossing when the lights went red.

After this everything else went fine and on return to the test centre I was feeling as positive as I could be.

Did I pass■■?

YEEEEESSSSSSS

If it hadn’t been for Karl and the other staff at Stockport LGV this wouldn’t have happened. Every learner I talked to there thought the place was great and everyone else who took their test that day passed. All the instructors (except Mr R) were professional and highly skilled. None of them had any problems with the management (this is a small family business with a close team). I also know for a fact that Mr R. has a contract.

I’m sure everyone reading this has some miserable #### they work with who hates their job/company/boss and you just wonder why they don’t leave, this is Mr R. Why don’t they just sack him you ask? It’s not as easy as this. If they do and he takes them to a tribunual  (with the help of K27 by the sound of it) the cost could put them out of business. If you’ve had a bad experience with Mr R. put it in writing and give it to stockport LGV so they’ve got the evidence they need to get rid of him.

If you are out with ANY company and the instructor does anything inapproriate that affects the quality of your training get them to take you straight back to the office, complain and get a new instructor or a refund. Stopping your training because of an incident will also give you a much better case if you end up going to trading standards. If you carry on and then fail your test, it could be seen as sour grapes.

In response to christianh. I mentioned your comments on here and they are still offering the free re-test. I don’t know how everyone’s wires have got crossed but I’d highly recommend that you go down and have a chat with Eve or Kay face to face to sort things out. They’re all really nice people and don’t want anyone to go away having had a bad experience.

I would recommend Stockport LGV to anyone. They take pride in getting people to pass their tests first time and don’t (like some other companies) claim that you will pass after just a few hours training (I was quoted just 10 hours :open_mouth: ) to make them look cheaper and then make the money later when you fail 3 times.

This is a link to a common weekend driving assumption by some newbies in order to gain experience whilst still in another job.

Interesting to see a different take on things.

I usually recommend 2 to 1 but it is not the best for everyone.

SHOUTING, insulting & swearing :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :exclamation: :exclamation: this is not on and it does seem that this particular person is having personal problems which he is unable to detatch from when at work - my advise to him, if this is the case, don’t go to work as it is not fair on the trainees.

Thanks for the response…it’s nice to be part of the NET

Thanks

Please don’t misunderstand me,it would have been better for your benefit to have done a seperate topic on your pass,so all forum users can notice.

How many minors did you get?

aha…yes, bloody Morrisons on the corner. Worse place ever where they can put a supermarket. You must be refering to the lights before the main junction, where there’s little market stalls.

I passed with 3 minors so was well chuffed with that.
If the only comments I got from Mr R. were like yours above then I wouldn’t have minded and would agree with your comment about it being funny. However the language he used with me was a bit more “colourful” with some of the comments being well beyond what is acceptable in public, let alone in a professional situation…

Firstly, congrats on your pass! RE rest of your comments, ive had a missed call on my mobile today from the owner of stockport hgv i tried ringing back no answer so i’ll try again tomorrow.

Like ive commented a couple of times earlier, during my training stockport hgv as a company, the trucks, the instructors (bar R) were fine. But then afterwards it appeared to me they were going back on something they had promised and thats whats puzzled me because they didnt seem like that at all. R lets them all down.

christianh:
R lets them all down.

I’d certainly agree with that.

I don’t think they want to mess you around but they’re in a difficult position with R and can’t be seen to be doing any favours for you. Have faith though, they’re gutted that you’re feeling let down and want to make things up to you.

ive spoken to stockport hgv last thurs, fair play ive been hard to get hold of, they’re giving me a free retest plus free extra training… totally genuine because they offered me this for next tuesday but had to turn it down due to not being able to book that day off work - sods law it was the only day i couldnt take off!!! so just waiting on another date.

i didnt understand the issues theyve had with having to do things a certain way… i took it the wrong way.

if anything all this shows that they do actually listen to any problems and respond to them, after speaking to them at length on thurs i know im going to get what i was promised and have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone else, in fact i have to 2 of my friends ex brickies who’ve just been laid off.

That’s great glad to hear it’s all sorted

stockport hgv were true to their word, just got back from training & test they provided FREE of charge. Didnt pass but i really did fail on something daft, the test went well (total 8 faults), this contrasted to me being well stressed the 1st time round due to R’s constant bull ■■■■.

Tutition from Carl was spot on i was very calm during my test thanks to him.

Thanks Stockport HGV, i recommend them to anyone reading without hesitation.

glad all ended well with the company

oops triple post

Hi Rog it happened literally in the last 5mins/few miles of the test, i was really chilled not nervous i thought i’d drove pretty well (i had until then) and i think i relaxed too much…

Basically i was going up a 2 lane, 1 way street. At the top of the road, the road beared left and beared right. He said as we approached the top of the road (probably 300 yards from the top) “turn/go right at the top signposted stockport town center”.

I’m in the left hand lane when he said this so realising i needed to be in the right i looked in my mirror but then almost instantly indicated right, i was a little bit on autopilot methinks  , if i’d just taken heed what was in the mirror (i looked in the mirror but didnt LOOK) i would have seen a big row of cars immediately to my right. As i’d indicated to go right the car to my right must have thought i was going to move over, i think they braked a bit, they certainly didnt slam on, but the examiner said that by me indicating right caused the cars to slow down. He said i should have checked my mirror properly, which was a fair point because i didnt, and waited to indicate before just basically looking into my mirror and indicating more or less at the same time. Hope i explained that ok, to the best of my knowledge i think this is what he explained to me.

Gutted but i know ive got it in me to pass… i was literally 5 mins away from passing lol!!
