Did I pass?...well read on

Hi again K27, is your location Middleton as in Drayton Basset way? I was well chuffed to pass the class1 way back in March, but the reality of the situation is a lot of companies won’t take you on with no experience. I recently phoned up about a supermarket job and got told no chance not enough experience. I said hang on mate i’ve been driving rigid and artic vehicles around loaded with flammable liquids and your telling me im not capable of delivering cages of food etc? This game really pi$$es me off at times, but i know ill land on my feet somewhere down the line.
With regard to Brakes. If you go in with your eyes open as to what a company of that size expects you will know what to expect and not be too suprised at what they expect from you, but for someone who is new to the driving game it can be a very big rude awakening and your in that postion of no experience and few companies who will take a chance on you.
Me personaly i had a good 15 months at Brakes made a lot of good mates and learnt a hell of a lot and gained some good contacts as well as good references. So i wouldn’t say it was a total write off. If you have any specific questions regarding Brakes pm me no worries. Good luck 2u and Brakes in Tamworth ain’t that bad i’ve done worse.

p.s. I may be on to my first full time CE job. Will let you know tomorrow evening how it went

K27 im with stockport hgv (ralph), very good company, good trucks. was talking during yesterday lesson and got round to recent tests etc, your instructor used these exact words or very similar when describing you to me :

‘he is a [zb] good driver and as close as you’ll get to being a sure pass 1st time…i was shocked he failed’.

Yep,that’s me. I just can’t grasp it really. On the reverse,I found the cones were space out wider at the test centre as oppose to the Stockportlgv’s yard ,could be wrong on that. This caused me to pay too much attention on the O/S mirror looking out for the cone that tells me when to straighten up. And,apparently I did not get too far over to the left of the cones, which I thought I did,as I put a bit of left lock between the first rear and front cone when lining up. Oh and Ralph is a sound Instructor.

christianh:
got me test tues (gulp lol). good luck next time mate, im sure you wont need it tho’ you are very highly rated.

Now you can be on guard with my error. I always have the drivers window open to check the blind spot,I’ve already headbutted the window once  :unamused: And having the window will help you to stick your head out a touch to see the O/S corner against the barrier when reversing. All the best on Tuesday, and remember,do it for yourself.
I’m not too sure if Ralph has given you the Safety Test questions, but Rog here has kindly laid them out trucknetuk.com/phpBB2/viewtopic. … highlight=
I kept on reading them to sink in. Not just to memorise the answer for the Examiner, but to heed them when I do get behind a truck wheel.

This time I did it fellas!!! Woohoo!!! A step in the right direction in changing my career, away from mithering public on the buses. My weak point is the roundabouts, especially mini-roundabouts. It’s finding the biting point (clutch) when finding an opportunity to set off without cutting across the path of other road users,so I wasn’t too sure if I passed. I had the same Examiner, and got six minors, the same as last time.
On with the job hunting.

well done

that bit you’ve quoted about me i think you’re taking out of context!

i meant the company and equipment were good but not the instruction unfortunately. its hard to learn to drive a HGV when the instructor is constantly slagging off the very company you’re using to learn to drive with… i just wanted to learn but it gave me a headache and stressed me out to be honest mate… or how about on the morning of my test him using a mobile phone (him initiating the call) a lenghty call at that… me then being directed by hand gestures in an area i have no clue of (when he remembered to point that is!).

What did the company say about such unprofessional conduct

Just what I was thinking, not good enough. Using a moblie while instructing a learner driver is illegal apart from anything else. Very un professional. Using hand gestures instead of clear instructions is also not in the interests of pupil confidence and may well lead to a dangerous and misunderstood situation.

i wrote them an official letter of complaint over a month ago.

they were apologetic and offered me a free retest, however i feel that this was just to pacify me as this free retest hasnt materialised… in fact this morning they phoned me up and said i’d have to pay for the ‘free retest’ and that they’d refund it later… but couldnt tell me when…doesnt sound right to me.

i didnt want to have to but ive contacted trading standards this morning and im very cheered up… wheels are in motion.

Exactly. Reluctant to say much now as it looks like it’s going further but more will be revealed in due course…

yeh fair enough. Ralph is a good instructor and where he was having problems I thought I could help out. It appears that the comapny hasn’t supplied the Instructors with an up to date Contract. In fact,it was only until I asked him what does the contract say regarding holiday entitlement,he replied saying what contract, and it stemmed from there,I think

I found that ok,I was just concerned more so with my driving, that was more important. Someone mentioned that if you can talk and drive, then you’ll be successful

If a trainee knows about problems within the training school or personal ones that the instructor has then I have to ask why?

The trainee has enough to take in with the training without anyone trying to overload their brain with unnecessary info.

I would agree. The trainer is there to train you. His personal problems are of no concern to you. You have paid good money for his expertise as a trainer and that is what he should be concentrating on.
