I think part of what winseer is getting at is what if a car with a similar plate goes thru and the ANPR gets it wrong. im sure they are using a two ANPR cameras to stop this
I understand what Winseer getting at, but if you used the crossing and then went to pay, why would you need a photo to prove it?
Of course if somebody had cloned your plate and used it the first you’d know is when the letter demanding the payment and fine drops through the letterbox. Then that’s the time to ask for photo’s.
I’m sure they’ll be problems, but no system is perfect, but the queues created by the present system isn’t perfect either and this is an attempt to make the traffic flow better on a piece of road with few practical alternatives, especially if you’re in a truck.
You have just made his point there is no pic in the 1st place . personally I think the system they are using will work fine. The only prob I see is splitting the traffic for the two tunnels
I’m sure this time next year we’ll wonder what the fuss was about, like many new things some people just moan for the sake of moaning.
They seem to split the lanes quite early and I have already seen signs up for the different tunnel heights, I seem to have read they have traffic control systems to deal with over height vehicles and to allow the haz vehicle to join the traffic from the holding area.
It’ll be those going on holiday who are likeliest to fall foul of this. First thing they know about the new system is when they’ve gone through it and they may not get the chance to pay before boarding the Eurotunnel. Once in France they may not be able to get online or call to pay if they’ve not got roaming turned on.
Anyone who crosses this regular then i can see its going to be easy, set up an account and away you go.
For us who travel over /through it once in a blue moon is when it becomes more of a inconvenience having to mess about sorting out payment either before or after when currently all you have to do is pay at the booth, pass and forget.
Who ever has thought this up has oh so got it wrong.
Why on earth haven’t they had a look at the toll systems that have been in operation abroad for years and years and if they have , why oh why didn’t they take note ? and I don’t just mean on motorways, I’m talking about bridges etc., like le Pont Normandie. For those that do go across the water to Europe, they will know exactly what I mean.
How many booths are there at Dartford in each direction ? 12 ? 14 ? Out of all of those booths, you could seperate them into categories.
Manned, Cash/Card only. 3 or 4 maybe 5
Unmanned, Tag only. 4
Unmanned, Card only. 3
Lorry only booths. 4 or 5 or 6 for cash card or tag
A simple signage would be easy for all to follow, with electronic signs above the booths, a bit like the M6 TOLL road booths.
This way, all foreign vehicles, heavy goods, or tourist, would have to pay, if they didnt have the tags and not get away without paying via the ANPR system.
Such a simple system that has worked abroad for ages.
If I go on line to make a payment - What am I making a payment for?
If I stick in my registration number, then it’ll just default say “Yeh, you owe whatever” weather you’ve been through or not. I have serious trust issues with authority after all.
If you stick in your registration, and they then show you on screen a pic of your car going through, just scanned out of the database of EVERY vehicle picked up on APNR - then that’s all the confirmation you need that you’re paying the right bill for the right vehicle.
I mentioned park & ride earlier. When you park your car, you go to the ticket machine - and it flashes up a pic of your car the moment you enter your registration to get a printed ticket.
The whole “reassuring” aspect to APNR is that you get to see that pic on screen, same as the system for letting people “buy a photo” of you and yours going down the roller coaster…
Because there’s nothing printed hard copy, the costs of putting a pic on screen are minimal - so there’s no excuse NOT to show the punters the desired pic - right?
If you mistrust the government that bad its more of an argument to set the account up then all you have to loose is the 1.66ish the crossing will cost you . mistakes are made in most things in life some go for you some against you I bet when you go thru and they have not taken off your account (which is more likely) you wont be ringing up
just read on Kent on-line a firm has been set up to help stop you getting the £70 fine by giving you 7days to pay not sure how it works. prob register with them and pay the full £2 and they keep the difference. don’t know how to put link up is on the Kent on-line website

I’d probably not notice… .Sticking money on an account is kinda “fire and forget” isn’t it?
Interesting that you mention the possibility of “going through without being picked up” though… It does warm me to the idea of getting an account indeed.

Bit off topic but are things settling down at your place now staffing wise ?

I don’t think so mate people are even leaving from Aylesford now which was un-heard of. I left a few weeks ago after 4 years

You wouldn’t need to go on any website - You’d just be bombarded with spammy-looking emails saying stuff like “About your crossing yesterday”…

Then they would be spam, as they have your number plate, not your email address unless you have an account.
They’re not sending you a bill, it’s up to you to go and pay either before or after you used the crossing.

sorry didn’t see it . looks like they are keeping the difference between the account and non account prices. If you are going to sign up for that you may just as well sign up for the account in my opinion and make the saving

That is exactly what I am doing! I can add multiple vehicles to one account so will be adding all the family cars, and as we have visitors travelling to stay with us from Yorkshire that only visit once a year I can add their cars then remove them after the visit.
A company with lots of vehicles only needs one account so much easier than using the old Dart-Tag.

Exactly.
Being from oop-north I had no idea about this until seeing the OP. Use Dartford once in a blue moon on the way to/from the Eurotunnel, so now I’d have to p#ss about finding a local shop or finding someway of going online (don’t have a smartphone)…forget it.
