Sadly this tragedy will not be reflected in the sentence if this man is found guilty
Giblsa:
just watched the news and i see the portugese driver is still in custody,is this because he is not from this country or is there something more sinister like tacho’s,laptops or mobiles to investigate?
This is normal for foreign nationals, then it will be investigated just the same as a GB driver,so lets not hang the driver until the police have done the job,or do some on the net know better. cheersJoe.

Sorry MikeC, you are spouting about something you know nothing about.
Knutsford services, is private land, as are most service area’s. once you go past the “out of motorway regs” sign, that’s where the HA stops.
but seeing as you’ve brought it up, lets have a look at what goes on there.
what about all the HGV’s that think it’s OK to stop on the H/s either just before, or just out of the services?
I know your answer, you’re going to say they can’t get onto the services. maybe you’re right, but motorway service area’s were never designed for HGV’s to have overnight stops, so the ones on an overnighter are stopping the ones that need their mid-break.
It still doesn’t make it legal for HGV’s to stop on the H/S for a break though.
Lets go to the barriers, they are not paid for by the HA, as I’ve said they are nothing to do with the HA, but the service area’s have to pay for them.
now when they get broken, it’s not joe public in his astra that breaks them (the astra would fold up first!) it’s the guy in the old HGV who doesn’t mind another scratch on his bumper.
It’s up everyone to take responsibilty for their own actions, not for someone else to hold their hand!
Once again I’m sorry for going off topic,
My thoughts are with the family RIP
Such a terrible way for a whole family to be wiped out i,m just catching up on the sad news as i have just returned from Spain where there was a very similar accident to this where a French family were wiped out .
It happened on Sunday night on the N10 northbound at Mageseq just below Castets and i am afraid the truck involved was also a Portugese driver and as anyone will tell you that drives in Portugal the standard of driving there is not good, thats one of the reason a lot of the roads there you have to drive with dipped headlights on through the day.
The French do not help with the weekend driving ban, as on this piece of road after 10pm Sunday night when 2000 trucks drive over the border at once and its chaos.
Sorry to go off such a sad topic but what i am saying this type of accident is just happening to frequently not only here but in the rest of Europe too.

You never said a truer word Klunk, one of the main reasons for me retiring early, couldn’t stand those exhausting Sunday night starts never knowing if I would end up like that Portuguese driver and living a nightmare for the rest of my life.

and 2+2 equals…?
“Sorry mr. Portuguese driver you can’t stop there”
(I’m not suggesting this was the case here - but who knows?)

So who’s responsible for providing sufficient facilities for road users?
Usual response:
Pull off at the next junction
And do what? The lay-bys are all full, we’ll get clamped if we stop in an industrial estate…
All the off topic in this subject is becoming really ■■■■■■■ boring…
Take it to another topic IE
“FAO MIKE C”…
or
“KNUTSFORD SERVICES PARKING ISSUES”
Too much whinging going on on this site just lately , it’s becoming worse than a drivers canteen and dragging the forum down.
Nobody logs on to read this crap…
At least I don’t anyway.

Good points you make Arronis. The buck stops, rightly, at the sharp end but the chain of responsibility stretches further back.

I dont know what you are meant to say to that Biffo. Its obviously the HA’s fault that he couldnt stop on the hard shoulder which is illegal. I didnt realise it was the HA’s job to provide sufficient parking spots either since they look after the roads. I also didnt realise that the HA had to give drivers parking spots where they wouldnt get clamped in trading estates.
Just chuckinh in something here but isnt it the drivers responsibility to find suitable parking spots. I guess its no different to me going shopping into town today. I had to find a ■■■■■■■■■■■■ somewhere, i couldnt just park illegally and hope to get away with it. And although there are spaces provided and of course there is no gaurentee there will be one, its only because there was a space that i parked up. I still had to pay.
Does anyone know what actually happened in the this crash? What did the Portuguese driver do wrong?

I don’t suppose that factual info will come into the public domain until the investigators complete their findings and the coroners inquest is held.
Im not defending this guy but as we all know in this country you are innocent until proven guilty he will be kept in custody im sure or certainly kept in the country until he is PROVEN guilty.
The night this happened i had a night out in hell on earth (Cardiff),This particular night i smashed the nearside lamp cluster off my truck.
I spent the night feeling bad about doing this as i regard my self as a good driver with no such mishaps.
I got up the next morning to hear about this tragic accident, and thought about how bad i felt about smashing a lamp! how dare i… Then i got to thinking, why o why do we not have HATO and or the police at the back of queues warning of standing traffic like its done on the continent?
I’m not jumping on the seemed to be bandwagon of having a go at HATO’s, but surely HATO’s could/should be used to do this.
The “Highways agency” must have known about standing traffic. So why ain’t they at the back warning the oncoming drivers?
Makes my blood boil that we as a nation will not take on board the way continental Europe deal with matters such as this.
These tragic circumstances could/should have been avoided.
RIP Statham family
And god help you Paulo Jorge Nogueira da Silva

Some police traffic drivers used to do this and they would keep reversing on the hard shoulder so they were always at the back of the queue - why is this practice not done now
Exactly!! I know this, you know this ROG…i think they need a kick up the ■■■, seems its always somebody has to die before they review the way things are done!!!

I can guess why it’s not done - money and resources

Well…it seems that they have the money and resources now doesn’t it?
One only has to look at what HATO’s are driving!! Top of the range 4x4’s. I thought these HATO chappies were there to take the strain off the police.
thoughts go out to the victims familes,
if u look at the pick in the paper, the white volvo globetrotter that is strew across the motorway
my mate was driving tha, he is very shaken up (as expected) i have “heard” that the car the family was in was behind him and the portugese driver has hit the car under his trailer, crushed the car as the truck has gone through and smashed into the back of the truck my mate was driving
terrible accident either way !
