Collecting dead animals

we used a single shot .38 pistol,

Beware though, it’s happened where we’ve gone to shoot a bull - several shots later (yeah SEVERAL) and he’s just looking angry and turning on you!! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: You then got to find someone with a ■■■■ big rifle (.308).

A .38 Magnum round should be used to drop the bull. :sunglasses:

Shot many then?

I’ve never done the job of a knackerman but having lived on farms for many years I’ve had to work with the knackerman when he’s called to shoot & remove or remove already dead stock.

You’ll have to be prepared to pick up a few that have laid around for a few days awaiting collection. Those are the worse side of the job in my opinion. Nothing worse than a dead animal after the sun has got to it it’s been found but, they all have to be taken away.

You’ll also have to get used to shooting animals, some will be perfectly healthy calves, some will be horses & Donkeys & some will be nasty bulls. You’ll be trained to do this side of the job, it’ll all fall into place as you move on & gain experience.

You’ll either get used to that side of the job or you won’t take to it. There probably won’t be any midle ground there. It’s never bothered me, I’ve held a few while they’ve been shot, it’s somethnig that has to be done I’m afraid & carrying the job out with respect for the animal is the most important part of the job. IF you lose respect for the animal, the job’s not for you.

I suspect you’ll be carrying animals to the incinerator at Exeter, that’s where most Fallen stock in the south west goes these days, apply for it, give it a whirl, you’ve nothing to lose. Be prepared for 24/7 call out though if the company offers a casualty service, animals sometimes need putting down at all hours & again, it has to be done. Let us know how you get on.

There was a driver on a knacker cart for Caines of Knighton who came around the farms in this area when I was a kid in the 1950’s
He would pull up at a farm and if it was grub time,he would sit on a dead cow and eat his sandwiches.
Caines of Knighton are still in business, not sure where the drivers eat their grub these days  .

Not me, they wouldn’t let me :imp: it was me bro’ that did the shooting :imp:

I worked at the airport as a baggage handler at the time, he shot the animal in the morning, and I took it/them to the incinerator at Dumfries when I finished work (6.00am to 10.00am)

I just flicked through about 5 of those clips, every one a little gem

That’s one part of tanker collections i hate. I’m a bit of a softie when it comes to animals and i cant watch anyone shoot an animal. If i see them arrive on the farm while i’m there i have to walk off somewhere. I’ve seen it once, that’s enough for me, and that was only because i walked past when the ■■■■■■■ killed it.

You would have hated going into Stannard / Klein then, they were in Stapleford Abbotts. Most of the animals from London Zoo ended up there and we loaded tallow for you to wash your face with

Used to deliver game feed to a place in Buscough Bridge, just outside Ormskirk. It was a slaughterhouse, and they deal with a lot of horses there. Doesn’t bother me too much seeing 'em laid out gutted and headless (though I’d rather not watch them being shot) but I’m glad I didn’t have my missus with me!

Pride of place on their wall though goes to some pics of a circus elephant which they had to despatch some years ago.

Only prob with places like that is the smell lingers on yer clothes.

Sounds like my idea of hell. I really couldn’t do any job like that, i’m such a wimp
I’m ok with seeing them once it’s over, it’s just the actual shooting i cant watch. I can fully understand it when a cows back legs have gone or they’ve got an illness, and it’s kinder to put them down. It’s the killing of calves just because they’re male that i dont agree with.

Another thing i saw was a farmer walk up to a recently shot cow and slice it’s ears off so he could get the tags, images like that haunt my mind

Not sure why he would want them as they are of no use, and should have gone with the animal. Sounds very dodgy to me.

As for the male calves, and this will come over very harsh, but there is no real market for dairy bull beef. Its a business, the other option is to sell through the local mart, but after tags, haulage, and other costs, shooting for the hunt/knacker is the cheapest option. Alot will depend on the milk buyer though, Tesco don’t allow any of their supplying farmers to sell calves for export, so cull is the only option for them.

Oh i know the reasons behind it, and i can understand why they do it. I could never do it myself though, i couldnt kill an animal that ‘had’ to be put down, let a lone a new born
