Chris Boardman Calls for

One major flaw in this “ban plan” ( ) is that people cycle in London 24/7, thousands of 'em! Whilst obviously this number rises during the peak times, I’m not sure a ban would help.

Mr Boardman is a high profile name in the cycling world. Former Olympic gold medal winner, Tour de France stage winner & yellow jersey wearer, 1 hour world record holder & technical advisor to British Cycling to name a few of his achievements. Plenty experience of riding the roads of London & other major cities. Chances are if Edward gimpbottom asked boris what he was doing about cyclists safety he would not make the papers.

Forgive me if I doubt that he has any ‘relevant’ experience of riding the roads of London & other major cities.

I reckon he has much less than an average London cycle commuter.

So what makes him an authority? A respected commentator? A man whose opinion should be listened to?
You obviously know nothing of what it takes to get to the standard to ride professionally, that’s fair enough, he got to the top by doing hundreds of miles a week, the average commuter will do about 5 a day.
Is it purely his ‘celebrity’ I wonder?
Of course it’s because of his celebrity, why else? The same celebrity use by boris when trying to be mayor, getting well known people around him when shouting about what he will do for cyclists when he gets into office, mr Boardman, being a scouser, was merely asking him when all his promises were going to be put into action.

If it is, then we need an equally celebrious authority on the side of trukkers, & I vote Curryfart.
Lets lock Curryfart, Boris & Chris Boardman in a room, let God sort 'em out.

so you would be quite happy to be represented by someone you think so highly of you can’t even be bothered to give him his correct name, nice one. As it happens I would like to see some of that myself.

Banning trucks will make no difference! Cycles will still be hurt by cars and buses, they will also be stuck in the same traffic jams! As most of the traffic is cars with one person in them. Answer is to ban all cars from towns centers and make people use Taxi, Buses and Trains. :smiling_imp:

I’d prefer it if we leave Boris and Boardman in charge of TFL,Clarkson for Transport Minister and me in charge of Transport for Surrey. :smiling_imp: In which case it’s anyone’s guess what type of regime we’ll eventually get in London but who cares anyway. While Surrey would then be an example to the rest of the country as to what could happen when the idea of getting cyclists off the roads and onto the pavements etc etc where they belong away from motorised traffic on the roads is imposed.Together with cycling permits which can be taken away ( which also means destruction of the bicycle ) on a summary basis as and whenever I feel like it. :smiling_imp:

Close but no cigar. The ‘actual’ agenda is probably more along the lines of banning all motorised transport everywhere leaving a transport system based on just trains and bicycles.Which seemed to work fine in 1950’s China so it’s obviously the future here. :open_mouth:

Heard chris boardman calling for a ban on artics at all times in london. As far as im aware all the incidents have involved rigids.
Central Paris is like a museum as the surender monkeys had the white flag uo before the luffwafe could bomb it. London is a constantly changing city how many cranes and large excavators are on site at any time?
Not heard much from the rha or fta on this.

The silliest solution I have heard so far is that all trucks above 7.5t be banned.

I have never, ever wanted to phone in to a radio station so much in my entire life so far.

I’m sure they dream up this sort of ■■■■■■■■ just to get people phoning in on an otherwise dull day.

“Yes, lets replace 1000 trucks with 10 000 similar but slightly smaller trucks, that’ll make it safe for the psyclists of London won’t it”.

I’m sure the actual agenda is to try and stop cyclists being killed by large trucks. I’ve not seen any cycling people wanting a total ban, just stopped during busy periods. Why do you insist on making things up?

cos we’re all doooomed, yeah ban trucks, wont last long let them get on with it

Those calling for a ban seem to think all lorrys start in the morning just outside the M25, take a leisurely drive in, make ONE delivery and toddle off home. The implication always seems to be “they can make their DELIVERY later”. What about multi-droppers who’ve from all over the country in artics?

What about bread lorries, based inside the M25 who deliver in London all day? What are they supposed to do, go back to the yard for a couple of hours and sit and wait? Bin wagons, construction trucks, civil engineers, meat deliveries, roadsweepers, recovery wagons, the list goes on. I ask again, where do the ‘Banners’ think all these wagons are going to go?

Fear not though, if the ban did happen, it wouldn’t last long. Because as soon as Tarquin and Taloolah stop at Starbucks for their ‘triple-skinny-chocca-mocca-chippy-latte’ and find they haven’t got any milk OR cinnamon sprinkles there will be a massive uproar, the ban will be lifted and everything will go back to normal.

Getting back to a serious discussion. It’s obvious that the truck ban calls from the cyclist lobby side ( rightly ) prove that there’s no room for co existence between motor traffic, especially large vehicles, and cyclists.Which just then leaves the argument as to how best to achieve seperation in the short term to avoid further casualties as much as possible. It seems equally obvious that banning motor vehicles from the roads won’t work in most cases.Which just leaves the question of getting cyclists off the roads and onto the pavement space wherever possible.Anything other than either of those two options is just a compromise of the status quo of dangerous co existence which will just inevitably add to the statistics. :bulb:

Having said that the political agenda seems closer to that which I’ve described, than a practical solution which recognises the need to keep the roads for motorised traffic and that motorised road transport in all it’s forms can’t just be removed in favour of some bs rail and cyclist based transport system.

Just a thought, how many other countries in euroland have supermarkets open 24/6.
Bring back early closing on Wednesdays and frec all open on Sundays/bank holidays i say.

Not heard much from the rha or fta on this.

No surprise there then. They’ll probably sell the lube through their website to prepare for the shafting we’ll all get over this.

I don’t suppose their are many kids who’d be pleased to hear that their parent was killed by a Mitsubishi Canter though.

Having said all that most,if not all,of the types of operation which you’ve described could/would be better done at night and leave the daytimes to the cyclists etc.Which would at least have more advantages from the truck drivers’ point of view assuming they want to reduce the risks of facing a stretch in jail by being involved in the truck v cyclist statistics. It would of course mean banning cyclists during the times when trucks are in operation which I’m betting isn’t part of Boardman’s and Boris’ agenda.

i drove thro london on the a501 on saturday eve in car and saw at least 3 cyclists without lights weaving in and out of traffic… monday i saw one go thro a red light in huddersfield… they do what the hell they like :imp: if im ever on a crossing and one goes thro the ■■■■ will end up on his arse

So you reckon all us truck drivers should abandon any resemblance of a ‘normal’ life & resign ourselves to working at night then?

& this would be a good thing for us as we would no longer be facing a stretch in jail !

My Dad told me that only prostitutes, bogeymen & vampires work at night.

I think they’re only referring to town work especially London, which would be a lot easier from the driver’s point of view, but there’s plenty of truck driving jobs like trunking that involve nights and no one turns into a vampire doing it as far as I know. :open_mouth: :unamused:

But assuming all the cyclists don’t want to use the pavements and all the drivers don’t want to work nights it looks like Boardman and Boris are zb’d. :smiling_imp:

I work nights and I’m no bogeyman or vampire.

Thats it everyone, just keep shouting away on a truckers forum making angry posts calling everyone names. That will change a lot.

Unless you get on peoples side by being sensible, adult and reasonable you’ll never get them to even slightly see your point of view. The moment you call someone names they’ll put up the shutters and never listen to you.

Thankfully I’m having some success at the moment with talking to cyclists and putting the views of this particular truck driver across. Thank god for twitter. Its amazing how much people will listen if you employ a little diplomacy.

switchlogic:

Although diplomacy and the ability to converse in a mature fashion are great, you are naive at best to think any truck ban will ever come into play. Cyclist lobbies will never have enough power to bring London to an economic standstill because deliveries are time restricted (especially at this time of year).

Using the old confusion by obfuscation technique cyclists will be promised much but delivered nothing, irony in the extreme if you ask me.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, name calling, mickey taking, low blow jibes are all part of that, heaven forbid it shows theres some passion in their opinion- its called freedom of expression and yes it may come across as immature name calling but everyone is entitled to their say… So scuttle back to twitter and continue your dialogue but please don’t give the impression you speak for us all or that we have to tread on eggshells in expressing our opinion.

Oh and a serious conversation on Twitter is one of the biggest oxymorons of all time. That said a HGV ban in London-I’m all for it, best of luck…
