Chris Boardman Calls for

Like that’s going to work …

How did everything he owns get to the shop?
What do they use to carry materials to build cycleways?
Why cant people open their flippin eyes? :unamused:

It might not work, but I’ve got a feeling it’s going to happen, one way or another. It’s in the news almost everyday now, the cyclist lobby is very powerful and politicians are under pressure to be seen doing something.

Personally I think it should happen. It will either work, which is great and a reduction in casualties has to be welcomed.
or it won’t work and businesses needing haulage will leave London or have to face higher costs because they only have a limited time to get goods into the capital.

yeah bring a lorry ban in, give it a few years then watch the bike mafia start on car drivers

Truly bizarre. London rush hour what is it? 7-9am 4-6pm? Where are all these trucks going to park while they wait twiddling their thumbs? Then when they get the green light your going to have hundreds of trucks on the road creating another rush hour

Bring it on ,our light haulage side will boom.

This is nothing new, the leader of the council where the latest cycle death occurred had already called for a ban on hgvs during peak times. I don’t know how it would work but I can see it happening sooner rather than later.

Maybe i should of elaborated a bit better , now I really can’t see this working for so many reasons , but I would welcome it if all the problems it would bring could somehow be ironed out ?

This could work. London has an abundance of space in and around it suitable for lorry parking. That’s why there are so many truck parks in the area. Most of the lorries don’t actually have to be there anyway, there only in London for a bit of sightseeing.

They could line all the wagons up like at the start of an F1 race and when 9am rolls around, give them the green light and let them race off. What could possibly go wrong?

I’d say don’t worry about ironing out the problems, if those lobby groups want it so bad let it happen and lets see whats happens?

Just means more lorrys in off peak times, causing congestion and less space for bikes

Bit knee jerk has the leaders of the councils thought about the hgvs they run. Costs of delivering and collecting will make an already expensive city more expensive.

We all know what the issues are, but it doesn’t matter how many times those people pushing for this are told they still think
a) It’s possible
b) it will be an answer to the problem.

So let them have their way and watch what happens.

He applauded Mr Johnson’s pledge to invest almost £1 billion in cycling over the next decade, but said the Mayor had not honoured his commitment to copy cities like Paris, where large vehicles are only allowed to deliver between 10pm and 7am and medium-sized vehicles between 10pm and 5pm.

Probably because Londoners wanted lorries banning from doing night time deliveries because of the noise. This is the price they’re now paying. They were told of the potential problem that it would cause but chose to ignore it.

Have to agree with Chris on this but dont think he goes far enough:

HGV ban in London and only allow deliveries between 8pm and 6am.

If your delayed tipping then thats just tough.
That may mean some of us get ‘London locked’ for the day but hey hoo.

Worth a try just to get the cycling lobby groups happy.

Also a cyclist ban between the hours of 4am and 5am on the roads (but can use pavements)to give HGV’s an hour window to bugger off out the city unhindered.

Special permission can be given for HGV vehicles trapped in London to get out but they have to be escorted by Police bicycle patrols…

This whole bike vs hgv is starting to get pointless & bordering on ridiculous.

6 deaths in a few days - a tragic loss regardless.

But 3 involved bus’es/coach & 3 involved hgv.

Times of the accidents varied throughout the entire day not just ‘rush hour’ !!

So surely any HGV bans at certain hrs should include all buses & coaches, no arguement can be had here as they have been involved in 50% of the deaths !!

Be interesting to see what happens if/when they introduce any bans. I honestly believe deaths & accidents will rise due to cars flying around faster & crazy white vans not being slowed by hgv’s & buses.

There are a few thousand deaths every year on the roads, not just cyclists.

Let’s ban all vehicles all the time and this will be reduced to zero!

Fantastic…job done!

Just one tiny problem left… :grimacing:

However out of the 14 cyclist death this year in London 9 were involving HGV’s.

No one is allowed to even say that some cyclist actions might lead to some of the incidents without incurring the wrath the Cyclist lobby.

he latest death comes hours after police were accused of blaming cyclists for the spate of accidents after an operation on Monday morning during which officers pulled over riders at busy junctions and advised them to wear helmets or high-visibility clothing if they were not.

Johnson himself experienced similar criticism to that faced by the police when, on Thursday, he suggested that the spate of deaths underlined the need for cyclists to obey the laws of the road. “Some of the cases that we’ve seen in the last few days really make your heart bleed because you can see that people have taken decisions that really did put their lives in danger,” Johnson told LBC radio.
