Take no offence Dek ,but if the gaffer has two beaten up cars and ex council house , how the hell can he afford the telephone number sized traffic fines for the most trivial offences.
To get to Portugal the trip involves transiting the Spanish Basque area who are notorious in eye watering fines that have to be paid on the spot.
10 to 20 thousand Euros !!
Then there is the French Gendarmerie and 24/7 Douanes customs checkpoints.
The Guardia Civil in Spain.
Ive been doing this for a long time but general haulage from Malaga across the whole of Spain and Portugal and sometimes into France and never had any real problems to speak of with any of the above authorities. This is scaremongering.
Ref the job, no its not great pay but for a single man can be a great lifestyle living in the sun and coastal stopovers are a day spent on a lovely beach somewhere…

What, all industrial estates in the Mediterranean are build next to the beach? And all beaches have lorry parks next to them…
Get off get off. I’ll have this job.

Cars go to holiday homes mainly by the beach
Sure the vacancy is now filled but in my younger years before I fell in love with the woman of my dreams I would have jumped at this.
Having driven a lot in Spain for pleasure this job could be a doddle.
Some deliveries may be an adventure but sure parking in a suitable location while waiting for the customer to come and collect their new motor is an option.
The money sounds OK but you wouldn’t just do this job for the money, the lifestyle + adventure would be my primary concern.
The worst thing about this job is probably having to come back to the UK.
I’m interested. Done plenty of Spain over the years, speak Spanish too. Lost my missus last year so nowt to keep me home. No car transporter experience though. Wheres it based?
Has anyone on here had the offer of an interview yet.?. I cant get a reply to my PMs to deck21.So I now assume positions filled.
Tony, its £750 a week in the bank every week…hours can be varied as you know, 15 one day, 10 the next…dont know if you paid for the 10 days sitting doing nothing…i would assume, as its a per week wage, and not paid for what you do, plus the fact your working for a uk based company, and your working away from home, so all should be paid for except for the statutory weekend breaks, a 24 one week, and a 45 the next, i would imagine holiday pay should be paid seperately…I was at solstor for 12 years up until 2012…so theres a possibility we have met, i knew a few subbies, but they came and went like flies…theres no shunters now, steve cave parked it up over a row over the rates, and drivers are told which bay to put it on, his own shunters are now back on the road.
deck21:
looking for someone with experience of car transportation doing Spain and Portugal up to 6 weeks away at a time pay £750 all in paid weekly
Had to check the calendar said 2016, not 2006 and that it wasn’t April 1st.
truckboy:
Tony R, now your being plain greedy…£750 x 52…does your boss pay you for sitting at home weekends
No but neither does he expect me to be spending a weekend away over 1000 miles from home nor being away from my wife and kids for 6 weeks solid at a time.
When you are having to park up for the weekend and can’t reasonably get home in my view that’s work especially as you’re effectively being a security guard for the weekend and you should be financially compensated for it.
Suppose another way to look at it is you’ve got free accommodation for weekends in the sun.
Probably a cup half full job to be fair.

I have never seen a car transporter on a ferry due to the different heights on the decks.
Also if the load was vans , they would be too high.
Unless the truck is based in France and you drive to Spain from there.
Six weeks living in a small cab would drive me mental.
Minimum packing of what you need in the cab .
Look harder there are plenty . How do you think cars are transported in europe the boat decks are about 16 ft even see them on the train
I don’t really see why there’s so many negatives being thrown at this offer? Seems a fair rate and guaranteed, 6 weeks away is no big deal and if you can’t be away from the mrs for 6 weeks it’s not the job at fault. Somebody mentioned it’s 2016 and not 2006, rates were pretty much the same in 2006 as they are today. In fact I was earning this sort of money in 2003, wages will remain stagnate for the foreseeable future for as long as we have an influx of cheap labour. Those of you that think working for £750 is below your worth just happen to be fortunate in your work, not everyone is that fortunate.

The way I see it is if you’re having to use the wage to justify it to your Wife then it’s probably not the right job for you anyway!
If I was single I’d jump all over an opportunity like this, either that or the racing circuit like muckles.
No more comments from me on this subject, until I get confirmation the job is mine. bye-bye. ha-ha.

It has nothing to do with good fortune. £750 in the bank for a Monday to Friday tramper is pretty commonplace in a car transporter position. The wages cannot really be compared to fridge/general work. The work is very hard.

Not everybody has a wife and kids and for some being a 1000 miles away from home on a weekend is part of the job they signed up for, sometimes it can go well, you stop somewhere interesting and get to look around and meet interesting people and it doesn’t have to be a beach, there are some stunning places in Spain where I’d be happy to spend a weekend, sometimes it will be crap, even if your best intentions were to park somewhere good.
As for an unpaid security guard, no boss has ever expected me to be a security guard on my down time, whether that be a night out on general haulage or a weekended out on Motorsport work. But obviously you try and park the truck somewhere sensible, beyond that my free time is just that.

But how many cars do you load and unload each day on UK work? I should imagine a hell of lot more than this job entitles.

I said a coastal stop over are a day spent on a beach. Not all deliveries are going to be coastal are they?? There are plenty of coastal towns in Portugal and Spain with space enough to park up nearby without causing obstruction. I have to take it youve not done any european driving…

Be loading 20 and tipping 20 a day on UK work for about 800 a week
But as u say it’s alot harder work
Also on 11+ alot harder work than on an arctic trailer.
