Can i claim backdated mid-day meal allowance?

Cheggy:
Merc, if its any consolation I get £2 a week from my employer.

52 weeks minus 5 weeks holiday= 47 weeks.

47 x £2 = £94

Oops sorry, I get £2 a day, not a week :frowning:

del949:
No merc I have enough problems sorting out my own pension with the latest changes coming through in December.
I am sorry if I ruffled your feathers it wasn’t my intention, I was trying to find out if you are a young person who has only been working for a few years, in which case I could understand you not being aware of basic tax rules but I honestly thought that anyone who has been paying tax for a few years would know the difference between tax paid and tax allowances.

My son is young & understands more about tax than I poss do but then if I had a problem was just ask my dad as he was a tax officer for a long time

Although I do know what I can earn before paying tax & tax allowances

not a clue about all this tax never mind claim back but i am in the first year of self employed and have yet to make returns so prob will source good accountant for that
but i worked as paye worker for 15 months 3 months of that i was sick and then unemployed all within a 2 year tax period so i have just put in a claim for overpayment of tax for the year i was sick and unemployed and waiting for a repy
didnt know anything about this meal allowance but i was paid a london weighting allowance and was still paid sick rate so how do i know what i am entitled to claim or is it worth it now claiming that i am self employed

Ask at your local Tax office or job centre they should be able to help

so …if your a lorry driver and your away from base for more than 5hrs you may have a claim?? does the same apply if your driving a van■■?

While your claiming taxes back dont forget laundry allowance, if you wash your own uniform you can get £12 a year backdated 6 years. Every little helps

Write to your tax office

I have a basic letter ( my dad done ) if you would like it send me a pm & will send it to you

It did work for me & at least 1 other person I know

If it has the company “logo” on

You can claim for your PPE as well

As far as I understood it & was then told by tax aid the £2 a day meal allowance is for lorry drivers , the 5hour rule is for any employee classed as a mobile worker so yes you can, I have written a letter & awaiting a response …

Just in the house and another letter from hmrc but this one has a cheque

£379.11 just in time for chrimbo :sunglasses:

Should say thanks to the Warrington driver who told me about this and redboxer for confirming it, because otherwise i would never have found out!!

Result

Fingers crossed, hopefully I too will receive a cheque , would make a change from all the letters asking for money …

Tax code has been changed to 972l …

LASHHGV:
Limeyphil is the man with the knowledge on this. With his info I got 6 years of backdated mileage and meal allowance of £5 a meal. All backdated 6 years with the p87 form.

thanks for the recognition. most on here don’t believe me when i tell them what they can get.

I just wrote a letter asking for my allowance about buying & cleaning my own workwear & 3 years of back dated meal allowance at £5 a day , I thought the worst they can say was no & I would be no worse of , but now I have a higher tax code & hopefully a cheque to follow , I recommend doing it if you drive a truck & the £5 a day allowance is for any mobile worker , you have nothing to lose & they do all the leg work , all they tell your employer is your change in tax code , get on it guys …

So: With a new tax code of 9721 as compared with the basic code of 8105 you will no longer pay tax on £1616 of your wages.

Assuming you are monthly paid you should be £26.93 better off.

When you get your notice of coding for 2013/2014 you need to check that the allowance has been carried forward.

Maybe a word of warning but I am not sure so will accept any correction

I thought that if your boss paid you a meal allowance that you couldn’t claim for meals.
just wondered if claiming in those circumstances could lead to any problems.
