Noww i dont kno if this is a lot of pish and im getting my chain yanked but ive been told in work a few drivers in warrington have sent letters away and got themselves a nice pay out from the taxman. Found this link hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/eim65799.htm is it EIM66150 i should quote?
Ive never heard of this before in my puff but i can claim 2quid a day if my employer does not pay me an allowance.
This is the letter i was thinking mind ive never been a master wae words! So any improvements welcome
Dear sir/madam
I am writing to you with regards to the tax relief for expenses of employment that is outlayed in the Employment Status Manual on page EIM66150 . I am a lgv c+e driver working for ************* based at ******************. I wish to claim my £2.00 per day meal allowance, this equates to a total of £10.00 per week, which in turn equates to £470 per annum. I have taken into account my 25 days holiday entitlement which is 5 weeks holiday.
My understanding is that i can claim back a maxiumum of five years, this would give me a total of £2350. I would like my money to be paid to myself and not my company. I have been employed by *********** as a lgv driver since 01/04/2006.
National insurance number:**************
D.O.B: **********
as I understand the rule, it is that your boss can pay you £2 per day without it attracting tax deductions.
if he doesn’t pay it, I’m not sure that you are permitted to claim tax allowance for spending your own money on lunch.
even if you can it will only be the tax allowance on the £2350, don’t be expecting a cheque for £2350
somebody will be along with a more certain answer soon

The guy i spoke to told me he claimed 2350 and got 370 now he is a fellow co-worker but the company is massive and i dont really know him to trust if he is talking pish or not
It must be twenty years ago when I got back tax working at Gilbraith Tankers.
I had to collect receipts for all the meals I had eaten during the day for the last month worked and the transport manager had to sign a declaration that I had been away from my home and depot.
I got 6 years back pay and a small increase in the tax code.
It is very easy to get receipts from cafes you use regularly, any amount.
I don’t know how you would go on if you cooked in your cab, I never did, but you could produce receipts from shops and so on.

It sounds about what I would expect so I guess that he is talking sense.
get your claim sent in, the worst they can do is to say “NO”
I got £400 AND my tax code was altered by 500 (plus).
Think they (HMRC) must be fed up with letters from our lot
They did say that I “may” be asked to produce receipts.
p.s
looks like the same draft letter that was floating about our place, think one of our drivers got it from a mate at tesco.
edit, you can only claim for 4 years
Printed out the letter get it fired away tomorrow see what happens, also see on that government website you can claim back the 19quid for your digital tacho renewal might type up a letter for that aswell.

I’ve heard you can also claim a mileage allowance back for agency work, even if you’re PAYE? is that correct?
I’ve been on and off agency since I passed my test, so it’d be difficult to work out exactly how many days agency work I’ve done since 2007, but most of my agency work has been either Trafford Park or Heywood, both around 19 miles each way +/-.
Maritime and Turners both paid a meal allowance, so I couldn’t claim that for the time I was working there, but nobody else has, worth a thought?
You can, as an agency driver, claim mileage expenses. I cant remember the form number you have to fill in ( I’m sure someone on here will post it ). Go to the HMRC web site, print it off, fill it in then send it off to your tax office, the one that deals with taxing your wages. I did mine a couple of years ago for two years prior to then, got a nice cheque for one year and my tax code upped for the next.
That reminds me must sort out 2010/11/12 - envelope on its way Mr. Taxman.
Limeyphil is the man with the knowledge on this. With his info I got 6 years of backdated mileage and meal allowance of £5 a meal. All backdated 6 years with the p87 form.
pierrot 14:
I’m not currently on agency, would that be a problem? Also, Do I have to give dates and mileages and proof?
get a little diary, 45 pence a mile!
Yep, that is what I used to do. If you forget to do it one day though, HMRC will accept the mileage stated by AA route planner or Google Maps route planners.
Remember though that ALL agency drivers need to have business use on their car insurance as they do not commute to a single place of work which is what insurance companies class as commuting cover. For most insurance companies, they will not charge any more for providing this cover.
After reading this & doing some research I’m putting a few forms to claim back my £2 a day plus the buying & cleaning of my workwear & you can claim back cost of license renewal, medical, digi card & even costs relating to dcpc if not paid for by your company, as its an essential to be able to do your job, its about time they openly told us in clear plain English what we can claim for & how to go about it… will let you know the outcomes …
I have claimed my mileage for the last 5 years,if you drive to work you can claim but if you drive to there office you carn’t claim likewise if your agency has an office at the place you work at you cannot claim.
