Is it? There is a lot of roads where 30 is to fast let alone 50, it only needs one accident and limit will be back down. Same with the police most no trucks go over 40 and don’t bother now watch them get everyone over 50.
Two points here. A research study concluded that there WILL be more deaths on the roads as a direct result of these changes, but the government has carried on with the change anyway.
Also, these changes are a direct result of the “success” of speed cameras and companys vehicle tracking technology, where theres a disciplinary procedure implemented if a driver exceeds the speed limit…and these infringements are highlighted automatically. The result is more and more drivers doing 40 and holding everyone else up…and guess what…the powers dont like it!!!! We used to say years ago that if everybody stuck together and just did 40 the speed limit would be increased. We didnt stick together and just carried on speeding. Now with these gizmos/cameras, speeding is not an option for many people (with points or a strict employer).
Can some one please point me to something official about these speed changes, a google search only really links to pages from last year talking about proposed plans and even reference “final plans”

we have to thank the supermarket lorries for sticking to 40mph and holding everyone else up,or we’d have never got the limit raised IMO.mind you,at 50mph on s/c ways,we’ll still be holding the artic tipper boys up

I feel sad for those that like to hang the job out by sitting at 39 mph, they’re going to need some new excuses for taking their time now.
You don’t get it do you? Most of us who stick to the limit do so cos we have trackers fitted and work for companies who employ jobsworth “trainers” to pester the life out of you if you go over the limit by as much as 0.1 mph for more than 50 yards. Thankfully the pay’s good (salary not hourly) so most of the time it’s a cross we bear.
As from next week you can whine about us sticking to 50 on SC’s instead of hitting the limiter like a “real” driver would. And I bet you will.
bellshill-kendal-workington-bellshill is usually 12hrs
bellshill-kendal-workington-bellshill with increased limit probably 11hrs
bellshill-peterlee-bellshill is usually 9hrs
bellshill-peterlee-bellshill with increased limit probably 8hrs
I don’t get this rushing/speeding about thing, why can’t folk just relax and enjoy their day, not having to worry about being on a unfamiliar road and wondering if you can hold every bend at 50mph.
Those of you on multi drop probably won’t lose hours in peak, your boss will just stick another couple of drops or collections onto you.
And the comment about cost savings filtering into drivers wages, 2 words really …cuckoo land

Cant wait for the 50 is too slow brigade to start clocking up the points
never done 40mph in 25yrs of driving hgv’s never had any points yet

Yeh exactly, and lads that rely on night out money to top up their pay are going to be out of pocket also, as they will be expected to do certain runs in the day that were impossible at the old limits.
As you say mate turkeys voting for Christmas, it’s certainly evident (especially on here )that you do not need to be particularly intelligent to become a driver.

I remember back in the early 1950s the limit for HGVs was 20mph. When I was about ten years old a family friend gave me and my Dad a lift in his AEC to London to visit my Aunt, he got done for speeding on the A1 in Nottinghamshire. Gutted it spoilt his 28 year clean record.
How did truckers ever get the job done sticking to a 20 mph limit?
BECAUSE MOST OF THEM WERE BUILT IN BRITAIN,AND BY THE TIME THEY WHEEZED THEMSELFS UP PAST 20 THEY BROKE DOWN…
oops,just saw the caps…

Yes better productivity is another benefit of it and who knows, if your company happens to increase turn over maybe some of the extra profits might just filter down to our pay packets…
Wishful thinking there mate.
My company recently installed a new IT system that seriously boosted productivity in that department. Guess which of the following options is true.
1 - The IT staff got a raise.
2 - 30 IT staff were made redundant.
Exactly the point im trying to make. Boost in productivity resulted in a pay rise.

I took an 18-tonner from London to Swaffham, Norfolk in September or October last year, which meant going up to Newmarket and then up the A11 and A1065. Up the A1065 (all single carriageway) I was doing about 45-46mph and suddenly glanced in my mirror and found a police motorcycle behind me. I thought “this is it, bye bye 19yr clean licence”, but at the first opportunity the copper overtook me and off he went down the road. I saw him a few minutes later attending to an incident by the side of the road and I never heard anything more of it.

Not in this case, a whole bunch of people lost their jobs. I bet they’re not praising the newfound boost in productivity. Job losses won’t be an issue for us in this case but it certainly won’t equate to a pay rise.
Ooh I’m gonna take a tape measure to work tomorrow to see how long my bus is because if it’s under 12metres I can do 70 mph. Oh no it’s still got a speed limiter set at 55mph. Ah well!

Although I do find it odd that, while those drivers that don’t want to break the 40 mph speed limit on SC, don’t mind giving it a full gas 56 mph when they get on a DC.
I see this every day on the A17, Turners of Soham and Roger Warnes and Moy Park are 3 of the biggest culprits, amongst many many others, 39mph Kings Lynn to Sleaford, then onto the bypass, straight up to 56mph. Over the ■■■■■, back down to 39.
