Bye bye stupid speed limits

Peddle to the metal

I’d hate to have a job with the pressure of having to have the pedal to the metal all the time

Nah, this tipper driver’s quite happy with the cruise or speed limiter set around 49mph. I still run anywhere between 50-56 on duals depending on whether there’s a chance I’ll get involved in an elephant race or not. So much nicer knowing I don’t have to think “did I slow for that camera?” (in NSL areas of course).

Conor:
I’ll be looking forward to doing 50 over the A66. Yes I did say I did 40 but because its the limit and what we were expected to do. I’ll just be setting CC at 50 and doing it from Scotch Corner to Penrith apart from Warcop and the 40 MPH limits. There’s no way am I doing Warcop bends at 50 loaded. It’ll be nice not to be holding up the paddies and the scots. I don’t think 50 on the dual carriageway bits will bother too many people as there’s not a lot of traffic on a night so they can pass OK.

I reckon Manfreight are the only ones capable of doing the Warcop bends on the limiter, I’ve no objection to anyone pressing on but some of the driving I’ve witnessed by blokes on said firm recently is disgusting.

The higher limit has now been in for 2 weeks and most drivers seem to think it’s a good thing, so if your hourly paid how much less have you earned this week and if on salary how many fewer hours are you working or do you just think 50 is better than 40 but really it makes no difference.

Anybody that’s on hourly pay will not be any different…if they have any sense that is. 50 is better than 40 as long as you apply it correctly, we’ve all seen the odd helmet or two but most of us are driving to conditions on the day…I think

Surely if the trolley wallies are worried about losing money by driving at 50, then can they not get the time back by pushing the cages more slowly, not putting as many on the tail lift etc?

Nothing. I just sit at the changeovers longer or stop for a quick wake up brew on the way back to the yard on nights. You’re a pariah amongst drivers at our spot if you do the run any more than a few minutes less than is on the control sheet. Days aren’t an issue as I don’t think anyone has come even close to hitting the time on the sheet. Nearest I’ve managed is half an hour over.

I don’t see the speed limit increase vastly reducing delivery times on a lot of routes, likes of A66 what you really saving 10mins on a clear run.

I get paid by the hour, never really ever hung about or gone out my way to really hang the job out, always had a really good wage. Used to do supermarket work before had trackers, never really hung around would do a run come back maybe take 8hrs they would send me out again end up with a 13-15hr shift, other guys hang around, drive at 45mph on the motorway, sit for ages at shops etc… get one run squeeze 9 maybe 9.5hrs out and sent home.

The new speed limit to me won’t save huge amounts of time, just means a better drive, 40mph on a lot of A roads feels far to slow, 50mph feels much more natural. These guys worried about loosing 10mins pay really should find a better job, because to me if i was having to do 40-45mph on motorways, having to sit about waste time just to get a decent wage or squeeze an extra hour it would do my head in. Id be finding a job where i got decent hours. I aint talking about having to go flat to the mat, tip of breaks, or doing anything illegal.

After just coming back down the A1 from Edinburgh through Northumberland I can’t decide what’s more dangerous, driving at 40mph or driving at 50mph?
Cars drivers are impatient regardless of speed, they still decide to overtake on the most silly and dangerous parts of the road, now we are all travelling at 50mph it’s taking longer for car drivers to overtake and increasing the risk of a collision. I know that traveling at 40mph caused frustration and silly overtakes but at least they used to get past you fairly quickly.
I personally think the move to 50mph is a good idea, it’s the car drivers that need educating on how to drive safely

I wonder what will happen when the customer says they want their hauliers to do 45mph in the way they are setting rules as in FORS, who gets to say what the FORS MAFIA or the EU,

They can ■■■■ off. I work for someone who wont be ordered about by box tickers.

It’s all well and good having these new limits but you still get stuck behind the idiots sitting at 37. They can’t control the truck at that speed let alone 50 on s/c!
If you don’t feel safe driving then you shouldn’t be on the road, all you do is cause problems for everyone who actually wants to get ■■■■■■■ home!

To be worried about earning a few minutes less a week I’d be more concerned about getting a better job!

It’maybe more about carving the job up for everybody else, if you get some star shaving half an hour off they want it all the time so everyone else suffers :bulb: ask our mate dozy

Reckon that says it all :unamused:

Still seeing plenty of lorries (you expect it from the cars) braking for the cameras on the A1 near Grantham.

Not me, I make sure I’m doing 56 if it’s safe, and wave at the camera.

Not much help if either the Road is closed,3 Lanes of 4 closed or a Tsco in front of you
