Mark Rimmer Steve - I’m going by a definition in a book, which was researched in conjunction with ERF themselves - it’s not me making it up! The naming convention for the LV cabs was - even numbers for cabs sat on the axle and odd numbers for cabs sat in front of it. The numbers went up according to each refresh, and started in 62 with the LV/B (Boalloy built) and LV/J (Jennings built). I don’t think there’s anything left to add really.

Steve Powell i’m not really worried either way but ordered parts by chassis numbers back in the day and had a working knowledge of them but it is interesting to see how enthusiasts see things and write books on our history, bit like a train spotter trying to tell a locomotive engineer how to operate his train…no disrespect to you Mark Rimmer but I have found people like Peter Davies to be wrong in the past and it has been some 40 years now since we had the trucks we are talking about although it seems like yesterday.

ERF A Series.
Photo’s courtesy of other owners found on the internet.
Guy Big J 8LXB photo’s to follow.
Cheers Dave.
good effort dave, and from how I saw it that is it, bit confusing because most of what everybody thinks is an A series isn’t, the bloke on Facebook did explain, I’ll have a read up today for a easy to explain explanation but like I said and as in your photos, the give away is the tow pin. Right im off to the vaults, and unfortunately not the. Boozer and I aren’t even going mention the big J word , it’s way to early in the day for that topic
Many thanks, chaps. After all these years when I thought I’d been driving an A-series, it turns out it was one of the last LVs.
We’re never too old to learn!
i don’t know what i drove , it had the lv cab , but had the chassis member sticking out the front . must have been a late lv methinks . it was identical to the unit andrew turner takes to truck shows .

At least you’re admitting to not knowing, Dave. I was convinced mine was an A-series!
Hi Folks,
Poor photo, left one is last LV ■■■■■■■ 220 6speed d/b gearbox reg no.UWT 666L
right one is first A series gardner 180 6 speed d/b/gearbox reg no.VWU 333L
both no power steering (black steering wheel ) Steering wheel grey on A series with power steering.

Cheers Malc.
That shows the difference, but you’ve gotta look hard
You know how to make a poor, retired driver feel really old!
I had two stints working for Pink Paraffin Stevo, but their A-series had all disappeared by the time I got there. Vehicles didn’t last too long with most of Reg’s drivers!
B-series/L10 ■■■■■■■ and DAFs were the choice when I arrived in Macc, with a single Foden 8-wheeler tanker and a rusting Volvo F10 unit lingering in the undergrowth at the back of the yard.
Hi, Malc, I notice the upper grille panel on the late LV is the same as the A-series. My poor old worn-out brain is struggling to cope with all this new information!
We had 4 ERF “A” Series on the fleet at Bewick Transport, the oldest two were '73 on the M plate and both had ■■■■■■■ 220/Fuller 609/Kirkstall D85 HR axle, both had ZF Power steering with the ■■■■■■■■■ steering wheel. The two later ones were an N reg 8LXB/9509box/D85 axle, the last one was a P reg 6LXB/609/D85 axle and both these later ones had ZF P/s with the smaller grey steering wheel. As I said previously the two K.Fell ERF’s would have been some of the last LV’s and I will agree that they looked, cosmetically speaking, very much like the "A"series that succeeded them. The "A"series were only on the L plate I believe. Now get your head out of that bucket ROF. Dennis.
This is a '70’s shot of my W.■■■■■■■■ marra’s fleet, the late Harry Thompson from Bullgill,Maryport, the older ERF is 6 wheeler flat.PS the on the end is a 16ton flat.

So how many of them are A series mr bewick just one or more, there’s only one with the protruding chassis at the front? What a pain in the preferable to distinguish what model they are, need another swing of jameos to get my head round this one

The first and the third are both "A"Series TKS !! It isnt a protuding chassis it’s a fron’t towing cross member! the first on hasn’t a tow bracket just a fibreglass grille where a towing bracket would have beem fitted. The “A” series had cab set further forward and as you can observe the older cabbed 6 wheeler has it’s cab sat over the front axle, clear as mud ? Aye OK ! Mr. Bewick.
