Bewick Tractor units through the years

Hi Mr Bewick, I been all through this thread, great reading & always a very smartly turned out fleet  . You have run British/French/German/Swedish wagons, no doubt you have had your favourites, but 1 make I can’t see you ever running, or there are pics on here of are DAF’s? Is there a particular reason for that, or when you were in the market for new wagons they just didn’t offer you a deal that was worth it? Regards Chris

Only one ERF among the Scanias and the little Merc. When did you get rid of the last Brit lorry and go totally import Dennis?

I carried paper reel wedges like that with rope in the ends on the back of the unit when I was on general , they came in really useful for all sorts of loads.

Here you are Chris,a shot of one of a number of DAF demos we had over the years, this one coupled to a load of scrap rail off the Main West coast line destined for either the Northeast or Sheffield IIRC.Ah! DAF’s,well IMHO ,at that time in the 80’s,they were too heavy and too thirsty and I didn’t “reckon” much to the local dealer either,MAN’s wern’t much better either IMHO.I hope this answers your question  Scania all the way :sunglasses: Cheers Mr.Bewick.

Oh! ■■■■,I don’t hate DAF’s that much, the computer wasn’t responding so I didn’t think it was posting, anyway we only had one DAF demo at a time not “3 or 4” like i’ve posted here Doh! you dozy ■■■■■■■ Dennis.

I thought I’d get caught in the Matrix for a minute then Dennis

Just to show there was no favourtism heres a shot of one of the occaisional MAN demos we ran for 6 months at a time  This one coupled to a Ross Youngs Fridge standing in the depot for an hour or so before setting off on it’s nightshift to Grimsby and back.

Now I think that could be very painful “dew” being caught by the “Matrixs’es”,sounds like similar to a “kick in the acres” to me Ooooh! Cheers Dennis.

Possibly, especially four times!

I didn’t only take frontal shots of the units !! :open_mouth: Hows this for a shot of the “business” end of some units

That fifth wheel must have been mighty close to those scotches when coupled up.

Another “back 'o the cabs” shot ,this one many years earlier at the old depot down in Milnthorpe, note the Autolube tanks which were fitted to all our UK motors but we stopped when the Scanias and Volvos started joining the fleet as they didn’t need the same care as regards the pins and bushes and the King pins

Dennis , why didn’t you buy any Mandators ? Alot of drivers /operators considered them to be the ‘premium’ motor in their day

Apart from the two Leyland Mastiff tractor units I ran at the start the only premium tractor I had set my sights on was the Atkinson and although I couldn’t get my hands on a Gardner engined chassis the ■■■■■■■ 205 and later the 220 did us a fine job. There was no way that I would have considered a Mandator or Beaver, they weren’t in the same league as the Atky or the ERF for that matter. If I hadn’t stuck with the Atky or ERF I may have been tempted toward the Big J or the Seddon 32/4 which were both better prospects than the Leyland offerings, others may have a different opinion but thats mine   Cheers Dennis.

The last two British units we bought were two new Sed/Atks in early 1984 and TBH I’m not just sure when they’d be disposed of but they sure were  Cheers Dennis.

That’s fighting talk where I come from, personally I’d take a Mandator over an Atki or ERF any day…but that’s what makes these diverse views on here so interesting.

And so say all of us,well maybe not all of us eh! :unamused: Bewick.

At BRS Corby in the early 70’s there was a ‘waiting list’ to get a mandator , all the newbies got a seddon , guy etc - but obviously thats a drivers point of view
