Hi Mr Bewick, I been all through this thread, great reading & always a very smartly turned out fleet . You have run British/French/German/Swedish wagons, no doubt you have had your favourites, but 1 make I canât see you ever running, or there are pics on here of are DAFâs? Is there a particular reason for that, or when you were in the market for new wagons they just didnât offer you a deal that was worth it? Regards Chris
Only one ERF among the Scanias and the little Merc. When did you get rid of the last Brit lorry and go totally import Dennis?
I carried paper reel wedges like that with rope in the ends on the back of the unit when I was on general , they came in really useful for all sorts of loads.

Here you are Chris,a shot of one of a number of DAF demos we had over the years, this one coupled to a load of scrap rail off the Main West coast line destined for either the Northeast or Sheffield IIRC.Ah! DAFâs,well IMHO ,at that time in the 80âs,they were too heavy and too thirsty and I didnât âreckonâ much to the local dealer either,MANâs wernât much better either IMHO.I hope this answers your question Scania all the way
Cheers Mr.Bewick.

Oh! â â â â ,I donât hate DAFâs that much, the computer wasnât responding so I didnât think it was posting, anyway we only had one DAF demo at a time not â3 or 4â like iâve posted here Doh! you dozy â â â â â â â Dennis.
I thought Iâd get caught in the Matrix for a minute then Dennis
Just to show there was no favourtism heres a shot of one of the occaisional MAN demos we ran for 6 months at a time This one coupled to a Ross Youngs Fridge standing in the depot for an hour or so before setting off on itâs nightshift to Grimsby and back.

Now I think that could be very painful âdewâ being caught by the âMatrixsâesâ,sounds like similar to a âkick in the acresâ to me Ooooh! Cheers Dennis.

That fifth wheel must have been mighty close to those scotches when coupled up.
Another âback 'o the cabsâ shot ,this one many years earlier at the old depot down in Milnthorpe, note the Autolube tanks which were fitted to all our UK motors but we stopped when the Scanias and Volvos started joining the fleet as they didnât need the same care as regards the pins and bushes and the King pins
Dennis , why didnât you buy any Mandators ? Alot of drivers /operators considered them to be the âpremiumâ motor in their day

Apart from the two Leyland Mastiff tractor units I ran at the start the only premium tractor I had set my sights on was the Atkinson and although I couldnât get my hands on a Gardner engined chassis the â â â â â â â 205 and later the 220 did us a fine job. There was no way that I would have considered a Mandator or Beaver, they werenât in the same league as the Atky or the ERF for that matter. If I hadnât stuck with the Atky or ERF I may have been tempted toward the Big J or the Seddon 32/4 which were both better prospects than the Leyland offerings, others may have a different opinion but thats mine
Cheers Dennis.

The last two British units we bought were two new Sed/Atks in early 1984 and TBH Iâm not just sure when theyâd be disposed of but they sure were Cheers Dennis.

Thatâs fighting talk where I come from, personally Iâd take a Mandator over an Atki or ERF any dayâŚbut thatâs what makes these diverse views on here so interesting.

And so say all of us,well maybe not all of us eh! Bewick.
At BRS Corby in the early 70âs there was a âwaiting listâ to get a mandator , all the newbies got a seddon , guy etc - but obviously thats a drivers point of view
