Bewick Tractor units through the years

Bewick:
Back to basics this evening, this is a shot of my first tractor unit a BMC Mastiff standing, brand new, in Castle St. Kendal, December '69,it was a 26ton GVW motor which was coupled to a Primrose tandem 4 trailer which I had built on wide track axles and fitted with the same hub assemblies and 1100X22:5 wheels as the Mastiff front axle.Contrary to the poor reputation the Mastiffs had this tractor unit gave us 100% reliable service during the time we ran it for about two and a half years, well it did have one of the finest drivers (not me I’d hasten to add! :open_mouth:  ) behind the wheel for it’s first couple of years :sunglasses:

I’d love to get a new Scania or the like in the same spot, and see just how different they are these days.

No change at all , “dew” . The Church is still standing , apart from an extended Church entry porch added a few years` ago.
Mebbeee the grass is longer .

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

I never realised there were as many methody’s on the TN site, there’s even some down Holme way,my old pal ■■■■ Thornton from Holme wasn’t one though he was C.o E. like me  All the Woodends were methody’s though, tight as crabs arses at 100 fathoms, apart from Totty that is   Cheers Dennis.

Its not a Methodist Church , Dennis , its a Church of England.
The reason being that the Castle Inn is over the road , remember ■■
The Methodists` Church is opposite the Police Station road junction , :sunglasses:  , - and TWO pubs. !!

I`ll drink to that !!

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

I’m a parish church man my-self,next door to the "Ring 'o Bells, the only Pub in England to be built on consecrated ground which apprently was with the permission of the ,then,Church wardens.Sounds like they were decent fellows eh!,my kind of church warden  Cheers Dennis.

France,France !!! did you get chased out of Keswick or what Kes ? :open_mouth: I bet it took a long while for the french to understand your twang Marra,eh!Have a word with “Fergie 1947” he lives out in Brittany and likes a craic ! This was the resting place of ONL482M(the cruel ■■■■■■■■ :frowning: ),after my time I hasten to add, apparently when they came to move it they just put some batteries on and the ■■■■■■■ fired up straight away ! Cheers Dennis.

Bewick:
An August '82 line up of four new tractor units at the Milnthorpe depot, the Scania was the very last new motor to join the K.Fell fleet so it was “the end of the line” for this old livery after many years :frowning: Cheers Bewick.

Was it you Dennis, that had the ERF dealership?.

I was the majority shareholder and founder of Milnthorpe Transport Co/Lakeland Commercials and sold my shares in around '81 IIRC,the firm then moved to Carnforth (DAF Trucks now) and also to Kendal (Lakeland Commercials)They did have an ERF spares and service dealership for a time at Milnthorpe and Bewick Transport bought a couple of ERF’s via the dealership but the last few ERF’s we bought came from Eden Commercials,Carlisle.

This a shot of the motor we had on contract with one of the smallest mills we worked for, from Bury they mainly produced writing and copier paper as well as envelope paper. They didn’t use much woodpulp it was mainly good waste paper, the big mill we ran out of, East Lancs Paper Mill nearly bought Olives out,I don’t know what happened but eventually they were bought out by Platinum Pens PLC.Cheers Bewick.

A late '70’s shot in the depot at Milnthorpe,an ERF service van next to on of our 8LXB B series tractor units.

This is a shot of IIRC the third Scania Chris Swindlehurst drove at Bewick Transport, fleet name “The Saddler 2” his previous unit had been FNO 42Y an R112 unit “The Saddler”,this unit was the subject of a scratch model build by “Consett Bell” which appears eleswhere on the site.Chris always kept his motor immaculate and was a credit to the firm.

I never got any bonus for keeping my lorries a “credit to the firm” either  :unamused:  :unamused:

I’ve put a shot of the 6x2 Scania on the wrong Bewick thread  Well at least it will baffle ROF for a while eh! :unamused: Cheers Dennis.

“On the move” location and photographer unknown :frowning: However,IIRC this was a Cullompton based Scania and the driver would have been Ron Hooper,a great lad and good driver from Exeter.

Fitted with them bloody chrome bus trims again ,tut tut.

Dan Punchard:

So I suppose there would have been a good few Buses, sorry Coaches, running about without trims :open_mouth: Cheers Dennis.

I didn’t only take frontal shots of the units !! :open_mouth: Hows this for a shot of the “business” end of some units

That fifth wheel must have been mighty close to those scotches when coupled up.
