Bewick Tractor units through the years

Saviem:
Oh Dennis, the “cowboy” in me would want the 111, but the saner man would wish the ERF, and despite my affection for Volvo…well I would dismiss the F12 as over indulgent. But I`m glad that they are all coupled to the real, and only Curtainsider, Gerald Broadbents Boalloy!!

Cheerio for now.

You,a “cowboy” “Saviem” never ! fair choice though the ERF 8LXB,we ran a number of these very reliable motors, all on double shift.I always specc’d them with the Eaton drive axle and the Fuller 9509/8LXB which was a “bomb proof” driveline which never let us down. With regard to the Bo-Alloy Tautliner well nothing else came near, the rest of the manufacturers built “Curtainsiders” which were somewhat inferior to Geralds product  Cheers Dennis.

Chalkeyf12:
good morning all

does anyone know where

XHK
A936/7/8 MPU
FNO

ALL 112MS ARE■■?

REGARDS,
:open_mouth:

Probably all victims of the Gas axe by now “Chalkey” but I have various shots of them when they ran in the Bewick fleet, which one is your particular favourite as a matter of interest ? Cheers Bewick.

I’ve dug this shot out which IIRC is of all five of the ex Essex Int.motors we ran, from the left FNO42Y,then in know particular order A937MPU,A938 and A939,XHK600X is on the right.Cheers Bewick.

Great pic - thanks
XHK was indeed the first 112m to enter the UK - New to Essex - yep i have all the scania promotioanl shots of her from Dartford tunnel then in and around the dock at Dover.

I remember sitting in her brand new - she was a non intercooler -
the auction was at Stafford i believe which must be where you purchased them -

Pleased I could bring back some happy memories for you Chalkster  I bought them from my long time dealer Pal the late Malcolm Woodhouse Snr. who had contacts all over the UK and always gave me first “dibs” at anything that was up to our standard which,of course, the Essex units were as the A reg ones were only about 6 months old IIRC and the X and the Y reg’s were included in the deal,They were all reliable motors and did us a first class job.Cheers Bewick.

Different kind of shot to-night,the Milnthorpe workshop in full swing with three of the four pits we had occupied by Red & Whites undergoing regular servicing.Cheers Bewick.

Ooh Dennis, unguarded pit, H & S would have a field day with that offence today, although I have to comment that some of the introductions that have been made have contributed to make a safer industry.

David

Now then, now then David, we was no back street outfit like SOM :unamused: I had occaision to walk by an up to date plant workshop to-day,on a main road, and they had a notice at the side of the door,“Danger open pits” We never had any serious workshop accidents in nearly 30 years,a few cuts and burns, the usual thing. The only thing that used to send me into orbit was when I caught one of the Apprentices under a motor relying on just the Jack without having the timber baulks under the axle as well,Oh! and half jacking up a cab because the lazy ■■■■■■■ driver didn’t want his poxy tele to come through the windscreen Cheers Dennis

Last one to-night,another ex Essex Int.R112 intercooler shot here on a bridge over the A595 at Crooklands coupled to a Task tri axle flat.

Lay off the Malts , Dennis. :unamused:
It`s the A 590 ,…or maybe your keyboard needs a rest. :unamused:
■■■■■■■■ Gill will be asking of the above location ,… then he can go " Bewick Spotting ".

Keep the photos coming , good to see the fleet again.

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

I realised after I’d posted it CWM,but it was bed time so I said bugger it ! Cheers Dennis.

This is another shot for “Chalkster” and his favourite ex ESSEX Int. unit, this time it is a shot taken from Charnock Richard services southbound on a Sunday lunchtime,it is actually the lead motor of three Red & Whites, the driver of XHK600X (first R112 to go on the road in 1981) is the late Jim Varney a native of Edmonton,N.London, but living in Kendal since the late 50’s.I’m not just sure who took the shot,it wasn’t me but it is in my archive

Cracking shot Dennis, real piece of history right there. I’d love something like that as a print on the wall!

Plenty to choose from “dew”,you’ll have to have browse through the archive one day  Dennis.

Another “action” shot of two Red & Whites, not sure who took the shot but it’s in my archive  ,I do know that they are two Radcliffe based tractors though

A 1980 depot shot to-night,a couple of ERF 8LXB’s units, two loaded Scania 4 wheelers and a Seddon poking it’s nose out ! The two vehicles in the foreground were our Datsun pick-up and an Opel Rekord 2:3D which I ran for a bit,Oh! and the K.Fell Sherpa has got its self on the shot as well :frowning: Cheers Bewick.

Those Datsun pickup’s were a good tool weren’t they Dennis?
The Japs were, and still are the masters of that type of vehicle.
Paul.

They sure were Paul IIRC we ran a number of Jap pick ups over the years including Mazda and Toyota,Cheers Dennis.

This would be a 1975 shot in the old Goods yard at Milnthorpe, which we bought after we took the K.Fell business over in 1976.I’m not just certain what was happening here but I seem to remember there was a Russian pulp ship in at Ellesmere and we had to load as much as possible “over the rail” to save on dock charges so at times like this we sent piggy back trailers down as well as this kind of move to save derv ( even then  ) Although this particular kind of movement was few and far between  Cheers Bewick.

How were you securing the piggy=backed artic Dennis - ropes or chains? I assume ratchet straps weren’t too common then?

Handbrake and a wooden chock sounds favourite.

one for you dennis,cheers benkku

I bet that was a bit nerve wrecking putting the Atki on there but even worse reversing it back ,not much margin for error
