Bewick Tractor units through the years

Retired Old ■■■■:
“Proper” Atki for you, Dennis.
This was one of two manufactured & put into service with hauliers as an experimental model. There were a number of two axle tractors produced at around the same time but this one certainly earned it’s keep- over a million miles on heavy haulage.
The windscreens, cab front quarters and roof are all Mk 1 Atki with various examples of the welder/fabricator’s art built on. In my opinion it looks far better than the Scammells that were around at the time but obviously someone in Preston thought the project was a dead duck before it started.0

I’ve never seen one of these motors ROF it sure does look the part and IMHO they must have been head and shoulders better than the equivalent Scammell which for many years had traded on the Company’s past history and if it hadn’t been for similar “stuck in the past” major operators like Pickfords and the big Tanker men,Scammell would have dried up and blown away long before Stokes got his hands on the firm. :frowning: Cheers Dennis.

The only bad thing I could see with it, given the time it was manufactured, was that it had a Gardner 150 in it. Must have been scrabbling through the 'box on some jobs- it hauled the Flying Scot on one occasion.

Ive just been browsing through your thread Dennis and as excellent as it is (some of these pics are superb) i think you could be the haulier that single handedly brought down the British commercial manufacturing industry.Theres not 1 single Big J with a 350 ■■■■■■■ with a 13 speed Fuller ,do you have an explanation for your actions and more importantly do you have any remorse ,if only you could have taken advice from a well know contributor on here things would have been so much different, shame on you

I now realise where I went wrong “ramone” all those years ago, what a ■■■■ I must have been, but unfortunately I couldn’t afford the Consultancy fees of the Leatherhead Asylum PLC.at that time.  Cheers Dennis.

Aye,the 150 would have been it’s let down but then again if it was well geared it would have coped,it didn’t have to break any speed limits on that work.A case of steady as you go plus for steep grades it could have used a banker or being double headed. :sunglasses: Dennis.

Nah- Aberdeen Overdrive for the downhill stretches :exclamation: Have you no sense of adventure?

I was meaning up-hill grades ROF,the downhill ones take care of theirselves as no doubt you can testify to ! Cheers Dennis.

Different kind of shot to-night,the Milnthorpe workshop in full swing with three of the four pits we had occupied by Red & Whites undergoing regular servicing.Cheers Bewick.

The only common thread to this shot is the three identical Boalloy Tautliners coupled to the tractors, which one would you choose, answers on a postcard please

Being a Scania mechanic for many years, there’s no contest for me, the ERF may have the edge on fuel, the Volvo would have the speed and perhaps the edge on comfort but the 111 was a good reliable all rounder. From a mechanics point of view I don’t think there was an easier lorry to service and repair.

Ooh Dennis, unguarded pit, H & S would have a field day with that offence today, although I have to comment that some of the introductions that have been made have contributed to make a safer industry.

I note with some disappointment that there was no 240 Big J to choose from?

Probably all victims of the Gas axe by now “Chalkey” but I have various shots of them when they ran in the Bewick fleet, which one is your particular favourite as a matter of interest ? Cheers Bewick.

Re ERF vs Scania vs Volvo, I am going to stick my neck out and plump for the ERF, the scania was a great motor but the 8 cylinder Gardner music would edge it for me. I would just want the throttle modded a bit to guard against right leg problems later, surely this would have been fairly easy to fettle? Or can I have a 401 atkinson to sit a bit higher? Actually make it a 402, With a longer wheelbase, 16+litre Gardner 400 bhp 8LXDT ( I know), 13 speed road ranger and eaton 2 speed to top it off. Oh and can you take all the seddon badges off.

If they were all new in the yard and I could have my choice i’d probably go for the Volvo F12. I don’t remember Bewicks having F12s actually, thought they were all F10s. I wouldn’t have minded any of them actually, might have had the ERF if it had been a sleeper.
Rgds MR.

Got to be the erf, only be cause its English made and because I started on the rd as a mate to a ERF in 1962 ish, but having driven one ide like the Volvo for 2nd choice, cheers

On the Bewick thread somewhere it says that this “F12” was in reality a badge engineered F10. (Similarly the “Gardner 180” Guys were rebadged 8 potters - no publicity requested). I think the 111 was a better all rounder than the F10, the latter being a bit thirsty?

Oh Dennis, the “cowboy” in me would want the 111, but the saner man would wish the ERF, and despite my affection for Volvo…well I would dismiss the F12 as over indulgent. But I`m glad that they are all coupled to the real, and only Curtainsider, Gerald Broadbents Boalloy!!

Cheerio for now.

This is a shot of the oldest of the five ex ESSEX Int. units I bought in 1984,XHK600X,a 305BHP R112.I recall seeing a Scania publicity shot using XHK as the launch unit in 1981,IIRC it was on a cross channel ferry.
