robroy:
I aint saying what my take home is because basically it’s got [zb] all to do with anybody. Neither do I really give a one what anybody else earns as I aint a curious, or jealous for that matter, sort of guy.
A few on here are on real good money, and good luck to them I say, especially if they are doing relatively jack all to earn it.
Others THINK they are well paid, but if they break it down to what their excessive hours are for earning it,… their hourly rate is ■■■■ poor, and even worse if they consider their night out SUBSISTENCE
as their wage.
In my case I’ve done the job so long, that I was just totally ■■■■■■ off with trucks and transport in general, …and especially working the excessive hours that are deemed to be acceptable, reasonable, and not only legal but considersed to be condusive with road safety in year 2000+
Say wtf you like they are too long in REAL terms, whether you are happy with them or not!
Anway what I did was tell the boss I was ■■■■■■ off , and going to either jack my job and go on the… wait for it …shock horror Agency
and work when it suited me ([zb] all this submissive crap towards them
)
Or I would see if he would be willing to cut my hours down to 4 days and a Sat morning, and he kindly agreed.
So now I still do my 4 nts out, do 4 days 40hrs basic + overtime and Sat am on overtime rate. I head out to Cornwall on a Wed with about 10 drops, reload fri evening, head back.
By the time I get back to yard at lunchtime, wash truck and car and generally [zb] about, I’m home for about 2 or 3 pm, with a 2 and a half day weekend every week to spend with the Mrs
The rest of them can rush about and work their ■■■■■■■■ off if crazy enough, I simply don’t care.
What I take home suits ME for what I do…everybodys happy.

Maxing out, for megabucks, early starts, weekended abroad, going like [zb] as an o/d and all the rest of that crap, I’ve been there, done it, t.shirt AND hooded sweatshirt…not [zb] interested any more.
admittedly I have looked at other jobs and even asked out of curiousity, but realistically ok where I am for now.
I could not have put it better myself Rob, yes that person might have earnt mega money last pay day buy f me he maxed his hours out to ■■■■■■■■■■■■!
Juddian:
I won’t say what my pay is either.
I had another lucky break and ended up where i am now just when i needed it, i’d done 20 years on the car transporters and was in me mid 50’s and i was thoroughly ■■■■■■ off and in a bad way mentally and physically exhausted and hadn’t realised it cos probably like many of you was running on autopilot, but my Mrs (a woman far too good for the likes of me) had seen it and eventually told me one night that she didn’t want to be the richest widow in the town; within a month a straw at work broke this camels back and i simply jacked it in with no job to go to, with her absolute support and blessing i might add, that was bloody good day and just to underline how right my decision was the company’s only contact with me during my notice period…even though they usually paid others straight off to stop malicious ‘accidental’’ damage, was a 7 word text the day before i finished telling me where to park the lorry, so good riddance for each party one can only assume, certainly from my side.
Fortunately we hadn’t ■■■■■■ the good money up the wall, so no debts, house paid for etc, it was easier for me than many of the lads still stuck there, and in other jobs who don’t have the same chance to get out.
Went on agency, enough said about them but i was lucky enough to get get sent into a place not far from here, now sadly closed down, where i got on very well, they allocated me my own regular rental lorry and gave me a daily 8/10 hour ■■■■ easy run which lasted about 8 months, which was just what i needed to recuperate if you like.
About a year later i was on a crap agency with the usual lies and rubbish they spew, when i suddenly thought about the place i am now (wish i’d done this years ago
), so one day when no work i called in on the off chance and knocked on the door, no vacancies as such but my call upstairs must have been received ok cos the TM himself came down and gave me a couple of minutes of his time which i shall never forget, he asked for a CV and said we’ll have a look see, not being an entire idiot shot off home ** completed CV and dropped it back at the place same evening so it would be on his desk the following morning first thing, three weeks later i was taken on and i shall hopefully eventually retire off this job all being well.
Had to start on a really scabby shift, but no probs feet under table and all that, now i work an odd shift pattern, but which works out at a month less than a normal 5 day week in days worked per year, 5 weekend days in a 5 week rotational pattern, which suits us as wife is early retired, there’s lots of early 4am starts but i average 43 hours a week across the board and the job is easy peasy, so it worked out for me and if i can do it anyone can.
No nights out unless summat goes thoroughly ■■■■ up, which suits me fine, treated with respect, very good equipment, and so long as the job gets done safely on time and damage free and the customer is happy (customer is the most important person on our payroll) they leave you alone to get on with it.
These jobs are out there, but they are never advertised and people already there are sensibly protective and if they have any sense only encourage applicants likely to be good prospects, you might go past the place a hundred times and never give it a second thought, often enough its just a lucky break as it was for me, but you can load your luck by giving yourself a serious work record which does stand out.
Lastly, own account and/or unionised is where the best terms are.
**thats why i always advise people looking for good jobs to not be afraid to knock on doors, and to have CV’s with you in case you get asked for one…and most importantly to try your best to have a good work record, lacking sickies and accidents.
Juddian, that is because you are a sensible and smart guy! You have worked bloody hard to get to where you are now but it has clearly payed off and your not taking advantage of it and taking the ■■■■ like others would! Your places are far and few between, but I am glad they are actually out their somewhere and I understand it takes time to get to where you are now
.
