Looking for some honest answers to what everyone believes is the average take home wage for a tramper in the industry. Reason being that I’ve only worked for 1 company since I obtained my class 1 about 3 and a half years ago and I’m thinking of trying something new (tankers, containers) possibly getting my ADR in an attempt to earning more.
So far this year my average take home pay is £544.19. This is for tramping all week so averaging 4 nights out and doing a 6th shift every other week.
How does this compare? Can I realistically expect a few quid more??
I would not tramp for that money. I was driving a skip lorry on £500 a week and home every night. £44 is not worth sleeping out every night in my opinion
I get around £2200-£2300 take home a month for tramping out 3 or 4 nights a week. Not great considering I’m doing around 55-60 hours a week. If I worked it out per hour I’d probably cry.
I’ve considered moving to rdc work etc, but tbh I like the variety of general haulage. On farms at the mo which I like. It’s tough driving in that it takes a lot of route planning etc but I enjoy that. It’d do my nut in being on the same run day in day out.

I should stick with it, ADR is niche and depends where you live as to whether its worth doing, it all depends on the individual and his/her personal circumstances the amount you state is a bit over the average you will be hard pushed to earn more in the for profit sector, look at car transport or own account work,

No I agree and if I came across a job that paid me £500 a week plus home every night I’d take it instantly.

That sounds pretty similar to mine, I too am on general haulage but as I say it’s my 1st job so I know nothing different. I do nearer 65 hours per week though and nowhere near 55.

I live in Stockport so not far from Manchester. I’d be interested in car transport but unsure who (if anybody) does it round this way. Don’t fancy travelling to say Liverpool for work and Manchester/Trafford Park would be the furthest I’d go for work, unless of course it was say £650 a week take home.
I fancy a bit of tanker work as sheeting steel during another winter isn’t something I’m looking forward to. Get some experience on tankers with say Turners maybe then do my ADR and hopefully get on some chemical work in the future, is this possible/worth the effort financially?

When I said 55-60, it’s more like 60. General rule for me is I’m looking to park up for the night around 12 hours.
People should qualify whether their pay is limping or direct, as the wages don’t compare otherwise.
I limp and the contract I WAS doing, payed around £600 take home for about 55 hours a week.
Currently limping on something else that’s a bit odd & niche, so not comparable other than I’m looking to lose the limp…
First of all you have to seperate night out money and pay, they are not the same thing.
Secondly there’s a big difference between gross and take home pay, not many local skip companies paying £500 take home for mon to fri.
Thirdly, there is only one way to compare one job against another and that is to work out a mean average hourly rate, so take you’re top line before stoppages but excluding night out pay and divide that figure by the number of hours actually worked to earn it.
Factor in premium hours worked to achieve that mean hourly rate, for example weekends bank hols overtime and hours before 6am and after 6pm are premium hours.

£500 take home for five days on the skips? this works out to nearly £130 a day-if you’re self employed.-if on the cards then it would be a fair bit more!!! I think someone has their gross and net pay mixed up
eagerbeaver:
Supermarket work will pay you £500 per week, and home for tea every day.
Would it? I’ll look into this then, cheers. There’s a big Asda RDC not too far from me.
They also employ direct so you don’t have to leave a full time job and work for the scum (agency)
You would of course have to work some weekends, however you won’t be doing nights out and only five shifts the pension is very good and a load of staff benefits late P.M’s would gross £34000-38000 difficult to get taken on but well worth the wait.

I work for Asda, paid £2200-2350 every 4 weeks for 5 shifts. £2/month inhouse gym membership, 10% discount card for the stores, Paid all breaks, annual bonus of around £400, no stress, clean work, don’t even get my shoes dirty! Go for it fella, online applications only at asda jobs.com
Why would anybody want to live in a lorry all week? That sounds like a mugs game to me.
I’m on agency in Hull, I’m home every day and I take home £400 for 5x10hr shifts.
You are actually working for £444 a week take home if you’re getting £25 a night night out money. Not too bad if you’re doing 10/11hr days but not very good at all if you’re maxing out your hours.
in the old Days i took Home every 2 weeks between ATS 28000.- and 31000.-
But we did long Distance. Paid by Kilometer. 1 delivery and 1 collection a ride. Every other collection or delivery ATS 100.-
Diesel Bonus. (Saving on Diesel 70% to Driver and 30% to Company
Going rather A Roads then Tool Roads gets Bonus paid
Following a List of cheap Garages got a Bonus
weekend got Bonus
So,well,…
Pertemps the last Years for every Day start and finish in Home Town was £35000.- a Year. Not that good, but easy Work

A lot of people on here have a problem with gross and nett. Especially the self employed agency braggers who like to quote gross pre tax dodge invoice figures as “pay”
