Average take home pay?

eagerbeaver:
Do you feel better now Rob,lol.

Yeh, but I’d feel even better if my 6 numbers came up and I could jack altogether.
A guy in Carlisle I know of done just that. He bought a bloody big house and put it’s new name clearly on the front for all his ex.workmates to see…it was ‘Fir Kew Hall’
 I kid you not !

Like his Chinese neighbours second house. Fukyoo 2?

Fair play Robroy, can’t counter a thing you’ve said. I appreciate that what one earns is personal information but in order to get some sort of truth with regards whether it’d be worthwhile trying something else to what I’m currently doing I felt I had to be quite direct and specific.

Changing jobs constantly isn’t something I want to do, especially for the sake of say an extra £30 a month however I’m 33 and only been doing tramping for 3.5 years with only 1 company so I’m just seeking info on whether the grass is greener elsewhere based on what I currently take home.

I get no pension
I get no sick pay (got my own income protection)
I do a lot of steel which includes sheeting so I can get dirty & wet at times
I have to do the hours/6th shift to get what I currently earn

In general I like my job though so I’m not complaining. However I’d like to do less but earn similar as I get more experienced so I’m hoping the more experienced on here can offer a bit of guidance and truth with regards whether I’m asking a lot looking to improve on my current job, wage & conditions.

I won’t say what my pay is either.

I had another lucky break and ended up where i am now just when i needed it, i’d done 20 years on the car transporters and was in me mid 50’s and i was thoroughly ■■■■■■ off and in a bad way mentally and physically exhausted and hadn’t realised it cos probably like many of you was running on autopilot, but my Mrs (a woman far too good for the likes of me) had seen it and eventually told me one night that she didn’t want to be the richest widow in the town; within a month a straw at work broke this camels back and i simply jacked it in with no job to go to, with her absolute support and blessing i might add, that was bloody good day and just to underline how right my decision was the company’s only contact with me during my notice period…even though they usually paid others straight off to stop malicious ‘accidental’’ damage, was a 7 word text the day before i finished telling me where to park the lorry, so good riddance for each party one can only assume, certainly from my side.

Fortunately we hadn’t ■■■■■■ the good money up the wall, so no debts, house paid for etc, it was easier for me than many of the lads still stuck there, and in other jobs who don’t have the same chance to get out.

Went on agency, enough said about them but i was lucky enough to get get sent into a place not far from here, now sadly closed down, where i got on very well, they allocated me my own regular rental lorry and gave me a daily 8/10 hour ■■■■ easy run which lasted about 8 months, which was just what i needed to recuperate if you like.

About a year later i was on a crap agency with the usual lies and rubbish they spew, when i suddenly thought about the place i am now (wish i’d done this years ago :unamused: ), so one day when no work i called in on the off chance and knocked on the door, no vacancies as such but my call upstairs must have been received ok cos the TM himself came down and gave me a couple of minutes of his time which i shall never forget, he asked for a CV and said we’ll have a look see, not being an entire idiot shot off home ** completed CV and dropped it back at the place same evening so it would be on his desk the following morning first thing, three weeks later i was taken on and i shall hopefully eventually retire off this job all being well.

Had to start on a really scabby shift, but no probs feet under table and all that, now i work an odd shift pattern, but which works out at a month less than a normal 5 day week in days worked per year, 5 weekend days in a 5 week rotational pattern, which suits us as wife is early retired, there’s lots of early 4am starts but i average 43 hours a week across the board and the job is easy peasy, so it worked out for me and if i can do it anyone can.
No nights out unless summat goes thoroughly ■■■■ up, which suits me fine, treated with respect, very good equipment, and so long as the job gets done safely on time and damage free and the customer is happy (customer is the most important person on our payroll) they leave you alone to get on with it.

These jobs are out there, but they are never advertised and people already there are sensibly protective and if they have any sense only encourage applicants likely to be good prospects, you might go past the place a hundred times and never give it a second thought, often enough its just a lucky break as it was for me, but you can load your luck by giving yourself a serious work record which does stand out.

Lastly, own account and/or unionised is where the best terms are.

**thats why i always advise people looking for good jobs to not be afraid to knock on doors, and to have CV’s with you in case you get asked for one…and most importantly to try your best to have a good work record, lacking sickies and accidents.

Yeh ok mate, but I wasn’t aiming a pop at you specifically as the o/p.
It’s just that what usually happens on these pay threads is you get a lot of backbiting, bickering and jealousy.
So then it develpops to all the usual boring arses coming on (btw surprised Truckbling Carl hasn’t shown up yet, when he saw the thread title) saying ‘‘I earn 2grand a week for an hours work and spend the rest of the day in bed’’ then others challenge these pricks which just massages their over inflated ego which is illustrated by the way they call everybody thick ■■■■ s that work for less than them :unamused: so then it escalates into a schoolboy ■■■■■■■ contest.

Anway, if you are looking to maximise your earnings try own account operators like…say Bed manufacturers with their own trucks and employed non agency drivers for instance, haulage to them is only part of the job not the main purpose. Or specialised like heavy haul, plant, tanker or car transporter.
Or there ARE one or two on here with good agency same contract jobs.
It used to be once over to try and get on for a Dutch co for mega money, but those days are long gone.

Also the biggest are not always the best, for instance don’t believe all the ‘Green’ hype/bullcrap it’s sometimes better to avoid the big boys and go for a small firm, but there again not always :unamused: . Sorry bud that aint any good as far as advice goes eh?
I have worked for good generous firms and some ■■■■ poor tight arsed firms, there is no simple answer or standard formula mate, it’s just trial and error and whatever suits you.
So good luck with it anyway.

…said the carrot picker to the lorry driver.

If a carrot picker can drive a truck then what does that tell you [emoji15][emoji15][emoji15][emoji15]

But you can’t. You’re posting for a job in the vacancies board because yet another employer has found out you can’t actually drive for toffee and you’re back on the dole again. The number of lorry driving jobs you’ve been sacked from surely would’ve been a hint by now that maybe truck driving is just beyond your abilities.

I know Conor.
That advert in the job vacancies sounds sad and like something off a dirty site.
Very discreet lol what the F@@k is that all about.
Carrots can’t be paying well this time of year
what a 100% T@T.

Anything a truck driver can do I can do, above & beyond. Only stupid agency truck drivers are joining me in the dole office que[emoji16]
Just shows how dumb some of you lot are.

Your job advert says you are a decent guy…
So why do you portray the opposite on here? :open_mouth:

You also say you are clever, but I’d suggest these are not the actions of a clever man…

I keep a diary of my pay. Just checked it and my average take home pay is £711.88. 60.5 hours average per week. Usually do 4 nights out.

Have to do afternoons/nights for that though. Rare to finish before 2-3am.

You would need a 51k a year job to cover those wages.
Just out curiousity what type haulage do you do mate?

About 50% nights out will be in a hotel.

Really?

Really. High value, if it’s loaded, it’s parked on a secure site and off the drivers go to a hotel. I’ve got star status on booking.com

It must be really high value, and you must be getting a premium rate to haul it, as millions of pounds worth of high value goods are transported round the UK for peanuts and parked in laybys every night in the UK and nobody seems to give a dam about putting that in secure parking and the driver in a hotel.

What did you do before you started driving trucks?

IT, specifically software development with a corporate company before doing it freelance for a while.
And before you ask - I got bored of it, and sick of having to retrain/update my skills constantly!
Plus with IT, you can always be working as the computer is always there.
I can’t park an artic outside my house!

Costs for hotels are built in, it’s what the customer wants. Could probably have a sideline in publishing a hotel guide!

there’s a big difference between gross and take home pay, not many local skip companies paying £500 take home for mon to fri.

£500 take home for five days on the skips? this works out to nearly £130 a day-if you’re self employed.-if on the cards then it would be a fair bit more!!! I think someone has their gross and net pay mixed up

A lot of people on here have a problem with gross and nett. Especially the self employed agency braggers who like to quote gross pre tax dodge invoice figures as “pay”

The figure I’m quoting is after tax and ni deductions. Maybe he should give a few skip firms a call.

if that’s the case its not bad.nice easy work too…
