There are still mugs around who think 5-6 day shifts doing tramping is a decent job■■?Why can’t we see more 3x15 hours, or 4x12 hour shifts per week… 2 or 3 nights out - and that’s it.
What’s the point of doing a “short shift” hundreds of miles from home, only to be sitting around unpaid in some layby (if you can find one…) during your off-duty hours?
Surely it would be better to cram an entire working week into as few shifts as possible, as I’ve depicted above?
You have a seriously skewed idea of tramping Winseer. I have no doubt that you’ve never actually done it but merely gain your “knowledge” from snippets of conversations you’ve been privy to. Or alternatively have read posts on here from some plums who treat it as some sort of masochistic endurance test.
I’ll go to the pub every night whether I’m at home or away.
Might aswell use the bosses money.

What I’m getting at is the full working week when it consists of (a) 3x15 hours - you are essentially away from home on the tramp for 72 hours, with 2 nights out, paid for a 45 hour week.
For those that cannot hack 15 hour shifts, there’s the 4x12 hour option, which is now 3 nights out, and 96 hours away from home.
Finally, there is this usual thing as per OP where you do four or even five nights out, 120 or 144 hours per week away from home… All because what? “A shift beyond ten hours is too much like hard work?” - I’m really not understanding this ethic here of “Traditional” tramping - unless one really doesn’t want to be at home for whatever reason?
You don’t get paid for your “downtime” hours during one’s tramping week. Therefore, you want there to be as few “downtime” hours per 24 hour day as possible… Hence my interest in the 15 hours on, 9 hours akip in layby, eat big meal in one of your 2x45 breaks you’d be well advised to have. Obviously, if you are paid by the DAY - then you want to do 8 hours, and then park up and spend a pleasant evening at some riverside venue, or whatever - 'cos you don’t get paid any extra to do over 8 hours - so don’t.!
If someone offered me a job shovelling crap for £20 an hour - I’d be reaching for that bucket and spade already - and I ain’t talking about “a trip to the beach”.!
If someone offered me a job eating proverbial crap though - There isn’t an hourly rate high enough to make it worth my while.
Surely I can’t be the only person in this universe who thinks like this?
Surely you’ve witnessed countless white vans full of contractors trundling up and down our motorways on a Monday morning on their way to spend a week working away? Do you think for one minute that they’re paid for every hour away from home? Or how about the sales reps plying their trade nationwide hopping from one Premier Inn to another, think that they’re paid for every minute away from home? Why on earth do you think that lorry drivers parked up of a night and going for a beer/a swim/ the cinema etc would or even should be any different.
I take home around £600-£650 doing supermarket work and I’m home every night.
If you don’t mind the graft and cab hopping it’s not too bad.
I know some guys who max their hours can take home 750+ but the work can be tough.
Haven’t done tramping yet and don’t think I will unless the money stupidly good.
Supermarket work tough? You’re kidding right? It’s a piece of ■■■■, I’ve done Asda, Sainsbury’s and Tesco and a trained monkey could do that work, you don’t have to think, there’s a procedure to follow for every single aspect of the job.
I guess you could say pulling cages or loading empties is tough, if you’re seriously out of shape, or only have one arm, but other than that it’s a doodle, decent money, easy work, no nights out and mostly less than a 12hr shift.

Yeh I’m fine Paul…how are you ?
I know fine well that you would not be ■■■■■■ about and work for nothing.
Still missing Brit Euro? …I know I am, we didn’t know when we were well off mate.

Ye I’ve heard the big supermarkets are quite easy. I drive for coop and pushing 300kg cages up curbs and crap is often not easy.

I’ve done a lot of 15 hour shifts for Tescos in particular, as well as shorter shifts for ASDA, Sainsburys, and Morrisons on occasion.
The trick when it comes to “keeping going” when on such a long shift is to volunteer to take the “Longer runs out”, which have a habit of keeping you waiting outside the store to be delivered to - because there is invariably a queue of Arla, Warburtons, etc. outside waiting to get in one at a time to get tipped when you turn up. You get in the queue, stick it on paid POA, and make use of the fact that you’re not a waitrose/morrisons full timer with a day cab!
Acting thus, you’ll only be doing two runs per 15 hour shift, and I would often find myself “not having enough to time to ditch the rubbish” on the way back from my 2nd trip to boot!
…Running into the recycling place that looks like it is full of “Epsilons” from “Brave New World” - is the low point of such a shift to me.
We pay our drivers thus:
£520 take home if you are unlucky to have no nights out, which in the main, won’t happen. You will get that figure in your bank when your on holiday as well.
£620 take home with 4 nights out.
Sadly no parking paid.
No weekend working, however, should you decide to run over the weekend, you don’t get any extra, so as you can guess, nobody usually does. Our gaffer values time at home, and he puts that clause in to discourage drivers running on a weekend, and sod the customer.
So if you live near to Huddersfield, (No outbasing, sorry.) and you fancy an easy box jockey job, you know where I am.
Ken.

no problem. but if one day company replace you with cheaper driver do not moan. wages will never increase unless drivers become union, support each other, at the end of the day drivers make the job done, not office lads… if we stop accepting low pays, companies forced to rise the wages…but seems like this will never happen, so race to bottom
Nice one!
To hear these arguments made in what for you is a second langauge, is like music to my ears!

I’m assuming when you say ‘‘We’’ that you are in some management position…so.
How can you justify expecting your drivers to pay to park your vehicles out of their own money without any reimbursement.
I personally would not pay on principle…, nor would I be too fussy where I parked tbh.

No company would expect a driver to pay out of his own money to park the truck - “Sadly no parking paid” = Laybys, industrial estates, town centre car parks etc.
I’m taking home 2k a month on rigids, work for it don’t get me wrong. 48-53 hrs week avh. Some weeks no nights out, sometimes 3 on bounce
To think there’s class 1 drivers in North West area(not saying you personally) doing 4 nights out a week for equivalent or less, I don’t care if there doing less actual working hours than me because as has been said, if your away from home and on a night out who cares if you work 13 hr shifts or 8? I’d prefer the 13 tbh to avoid boredom.
As for night out money, I spend maybe £12 tops on a beer and hot meal if i find one of those identikit plastic pubs, maybe £3 next day on a coffee and bacon roll from Gregg’s.
Other nights I’ll spend £3 of my night out money on a sandwich for tea if I CBA and just wanna get my head down and have a 9hour off. Love my sleep more than food sometimes. So every penny I don’t spend of my £30 allowance (minus tax- prefer to be taxed than provide receipts) of course this counts to my take home.
If you want to minus 50p a time to cover costs of washing my bedding, fine

Yeh? …Well a lot of the Dutch firms who used to employ UK drivers never did, in fact there is still.a one now who doesn’t last time I checked…and what if they are carrying valuables, what is their policy then.?
Tbh I did kinda get the point you made myself, but they can not complain if their trucks get their loads turned over or fuel nicked.
Our lot pay for parking but I only use that facility if I get some kind of perk and/or, if carrying anything valuable.
I prefer my own little corners that I know are relatively safe, and deffo more safe than an MSA.

I expect a lot of people would say that.
And when you find out the guy next to you is shovelling away for £15 quid an hour, I’ll bet your smile will get wider.
Maybe not so wide if he’s on £25 an hour?
None of us should be on just minimum wage. We should be worth more than that.
What matters to me is what has gone into my account at year’s end, and if I don’t hate getting out of bed to to to work.
Doesn’t matter how the money is calculated. The bottom line does.
Doesn’t matter if I spend more on nights out sometimes to have a laugh or less to save it up, so long as I’m happy.
Money is important but it isn’t everything.
Compare your pay to others and there will ALWAYS be someone who says they are better off than you.
Especially on t’internet.
P.S. I’m on 35 quid an hour.

I do have a small degree of sympathy for companies maybe encouraging drivers to use some imagination when parking up for the night, quite often you can do a lot better than forking out £20 on a truck stop/MSA for free. However, a blanket “no parking paid” policy to me just stinks of an employer not having very much regard for their employees welfare. Not having the option of paid parking will often land a driver stuck against his will in some crappy layby/industrial estate miles from anywhere with no facilties. Not sure i’d be too comfortable knowing i’d inflicted such poor conditions on a member of staff by being cheap, as i’m driving home to a warm bed. May as well say “bring an empty Lenor bottle drive”.
